gaw 5 Posted December 11, 2011 Saint Euxpery's book "Wind, Sand, and Stars" remains one of the great lyrical odes to early flying.....still a magnificent read. Another forgotten great is the children's author Roald Dahl....of "James and the Giant Peach" fame....among others. He flew in Africa during the war and has a marvelous book titled "Over to You" that's lovely. And now I know, what Beathe Uhse meant, when she described flying the Bf109 F without ammunition weight; she said: "Wind, Sand and Stars". She must have meant that book. (Uhse was a female pilot, who wasn't allowed to fight in WW2, but she had to transfer fighters to squadrons.
