Ooops! Some don't even need Enemies

Recommended Posts

This British aviator might have been still at Flying School, when he hit the trees with his aircraft.

Does anyone know, which aircraft this is? (Note the way the Cockardes are painted on).

Well, it's not a 504k...so i'm stumped

(the guy half way up the tree...or is he a member of the crew half way down the tree?)

The thing I always liked about early aviation is that granted it might have been dangerous and things might have failed and the like, but they often seem to get into a good old prang and still be in relatively one piece.

Also reminds me of a picture I saw of a He111 upside down, nose down planted in the side of what seemed to be a pub, can't post it though as it was in one of them old fashioned paper things, rather than internet land.

Flying is not so easy - and it's always bad when you haven't read the manual!

Could it be an early B.E.2 ?

Mikeymead, I thought it looked a bit 'BE2ish' as well. A BE2b perhaps?

Yep. Red appears much darker on B/W film than blue. And the note said "British aviator...".

Hihi - why do you, Flyby? Because you think, an English pilot couldn't have such a bad luck?

I guess accidents like that happened a lot with those underpowered crates.

Be2 like this perhaps?

Same looking skid anyway, but then I suppose a skid is a skid is a skid.

Could be some early B.E.2. They look somewhat different than the classic B.E.2c.

That guy had some really bad, but also good luck!

I'd guess it probably looked like this in colour (presuming it were a Be2):

(I couldn't be bothered to colour in the trees. )

It's all in the light.

I still think he's French, and I'm almost positive.

Flyby, changing a Jpeg to greyscale doesn't do the same thing like a B/W film does with colours.

It is common WW1 research knowledge, that red appeared darker than blue.

I hasten to add, he could be British, and if the text says he is, then who am I to argue? But the colours could be French, and I've never seen any British aircraft with that type of livery.

I'm guessing the picture is early WW1, when the French had a lot more aircraft than the RFC.

It's not so much that I think he's French as that I doubt he's British.

Might be my imagination, but I think I can see the hint of a roundel on the top of the horizontal stabilizer in this pic:

BE2c_1748_No6Sqn.JPG

You can see a dark smudge in the middle with a lighter part to the right, then another darker curve outside that. Plus this one has no roundels on the top of the main Wings, like the one in the crash pic.

(This is apparently a B.E.2c of No. 6 Squadron R.F.C)

Yeah, and the poplars are German.

Planted long before the war by far-seeing army engineers, disguised as the French impressionists Monet & Manet.

In WW2 Online theres a sort of Pilot joke, as in the begining the ground forces used to shell Airfields with tanks and the like - so the developers placed trees around most of the Airfields to block their line of sight, the only trouble is the trees kill more 'greentags' than enemy tanks ever could!

The trees are so deadly that we keep saying German Agents planted them before the war.
