Adding more SAMs to a Desert campaign

Recommended Posts

I would like to give Paran some SA-6 and SA-8 systems for an '80s campaign. I extracted the USERLIST.INI files for both (and StraightFlush), added:

[Paran]
ServiceStartYear=1972
ServiceEndYear=2020
Availability=COMMON

Neither system is showing up in a 1985 campaign I made. What else do i need to edit?

the targets ini; you have to 'emplace' the SAM batteries

do't worry about the user list for them; as SOVIET, they'll show everywhere there's a slot for them

Oh, I see them now. Thanks. Do I need to add some sites with Activeyear=1985 for them to show up, or does Activeyear=1966 mean from 1966 on?

From the desert_targets.ini :

Target[018].Type=SAMRadar
Target[018].Offset=-3298.00,4249.00
Target[018].Heading=45
Target[018].ActiveYear=1966
Target[019].Type=SAMLauncher
Target[019].Offset=-3392.00,4381.00
Target[019].Heading=330
Target[019].ActiveYear=1966

ActiveYear= is when you want it to turn "on". YOu also can have InactiveYear= when you want something to turn 'off'.

it can be done for full target areas (as is done by TK on the IsrealME map) or individual objects

a lot also depends on just how you want the batteries deployed -- are you adding them as seperate target areas (ie: Air Defense Battery Achmed) or building the battery into a pre-existing target area (like one of the parani cities

bot have thier advantages and disadvantages. Those batteries, say with 50km of the border, would be 'by themselves', sam launchers, ewr, sam radars, their associated AAA defenses -and AAA gunlaying radars--. Or as smaller batteris, perhaps at the outskirts of a city, but the components listed AS part of the city.

HOWEVER ... stacking multiple target areas within each other causes unbelievable s**tloads of problems ... which is why, if folks would look through the _targets.ini for my last year or 2 of terrain work will find cities (the Iraq/Iran and OpDarius I/I 2003, PersianGulf and others), you 'll see both used, as the situation demands.

Same goes for airfield -- for the most part, the batteries get built right into the airbase location

if you look through the Desert_Types.ini, you'll probably find the listing for SAMLauncher, EWR, and SAMRadar already there

btw, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back 9n 2004, Fubar did a SAM update for the desert map, adding the then 'new' HAWK batteries for Dhimar. This isn't something new. Piecmeal has also done this with his desert targets upgrad (albeit using multiple seperate areas)

Excellent info. And I added this to my CAMPAIGN_DATA.INI under [Force002] :

StartAirDefenseLevel=3

Now I have another playground for the F-4G .

and most importantly....

Always use the 'generic' target name tags for AD units!!!!

meaning: EWR, SAMRadar, SAMLauncher, AAA (the only one to use named, is the firecan -otherwise it won't show where you want it)

If using direct named units (HAWKL, SA-10L, etc), odds are due to a major game engine glitch since the 08patch 1stGens, they may not work, or even show up. In sf2, named SAMR and EWR units may not show up on the TEWS or vector RWRs. Another glitch that can't seem to be fixed

Even as, say in my case, I have detailed maps and descriptions, right down to exact type of unit, for most of the world; use the generic tags when at all possible and trust/hope the userlist.ini does it's job (yes, they're requred for SAML/SAMR due to their exportation)

I did this to the SF2 Desert terrain already. I added some more batteries along the border and in the cities. I forget where exactly they are located.

This SAM dispositive posted by F117NightHawk can work wth SF2 Israel? I search something like this, Egyptian SAMs for Suez-Nile area about 1969-1970.

Thanks

Hi

I need more AAA and SAM for the desert map. I actually copied the targets mentioned by F117nighthawk, copied them in the desert_targets.ini, but they don't show up in on the map and def not in the mission editor.

Is there something else I need to do?

Just out of curiosity (I'm pretty new to this), how do the coordinates work, just in case i want to add some SAMS to SF2NA as well...

Thanks!

Do you have the various SAMs GroundObjects in the /GO folder? Do you have the required missiles for said launchers in the /weapons folder? The game is very picky/finicky about populating things. Another important fact, is the Engine will NOT populate areas 50km or more from the player's aircraft. The mission builder even more wonky

there are no AD batteries in Iceland, per se, in the Real World ™. If there were, they've long since been removed (reference: SAMs.kmz)

there would/could be smaller units deployed to defend airbases (possible a 3-launcher HAWK battery, plus Chapparell relpacing AAA guns for NATO, plus buttloads of MANPADS all over the place. It's doubtfull, but possible, the Red side COULD move batteries of modile SAMs -like SA-6s- but who knows)

0000000x00000 is the bottom left of every map

remember, don't confuse this:

[TargetArea001]

Name=Port Moresby

Position=567043,202059

Radius=3000

ActiveYear=0

Location=1

with this:

Target[001].Type=amRadioTower

Target[001].Offset=0.0

Target[001].Heading=0

there's a tutorial written by a Terrain Guru, most likely in the 1stGen Knowledge Base, on "How To Target"

I guess that the active date line in the target area data affects the SAM type which will appear in the game. However how can I choose a specific type of SAM to appear?

If for example the active date of a SAMLauncher is set to 01/01/1965 the game will choose SAMs which were operational after this date? In this case all SAMs can be selected varied from SA-2 to SA-17.

What edits have to be made so that I can choose to appear the SAM system I want?

no, that just tell the engine when to "turn on" those entries.

and actually, they were done WRONG!!

you use the ActiveDate= line for the entire target area, and set it to start whenever you want it too.

Like so....

[TargetArea081]

Name=SAM Battery 7

Position=700000.00,500000.00

Location=2

Alignment=ENEMY

ActiveYear=1967

Target[001].Type=SAMRadar

Target[001].Offset=-1957.04,-1956.48

Target[001].Heading=0

What edits have to be made so that I can choose to appear the SAM system I want

see my post above a 'specific units called out'. TK broke that with the 1stGen 08 patch.
