hrc 156 Posted December 10, 2012 (edited) Anybody with experience of it? Apparently it is much cheaper to make your own optical motion tracking device with FreeTrack software than to buy for instance TrackIR 5. And what about its compatibility with different flight sims? RogerSmith 72 Posted December 10, 2012 Used to use it before TIR5. Just save up your money and buy TIR5 because, unlike Freetrack, it works straight out of the box and is more reliable.
+DoctorQuest 125 Posted December 11, 2012 I've researched it and I'm going to save my pennies for a TrackIR. Yeah, it's free but it is a lot of work to set up in my opinion.
RogerSmith 72 Posted December 11, 2012 Freetrack takes a lot to get working, and I never got it to work 100%. It took me hours of fiddling to get it to work decently, messing with exposure, saturation, contrast, brightness, sensitivity, measuring the dimensions of the headset and I even had to mess with the settings of the camera itself. you even had to build your own infrared lights, but I took the shortcut and used Natural Point's Track Clip. The problem I always had was the light in the background, it always picked up on stray sunlight or even a light bulb screwing up my whole experience forcing me to find and cover the source or change Freetrack settings all over again. I myself don't like the Track Clip because I didn't have headphones forcing me to use sunglasses as a make-shift TrackClip holder and it was always distracting me because of wire and the headset itself. I love to use the Vector PRO (3 reflectors you stick on a baseball cap) because it does not have wires but for that you would have to modify the webcam to shine IR lights at you. Track IR, it works right out of the box. I did not have to mess with any settings, I do not experience any interference from light sources even with sunlight in the background, it's definitely more accurate. It works with both Track Clip and Vector PRO and already has IR lights built into the camera and comes with Vector PRO in the box.
