What does it take to destroy an AEG bomber?

New to FE2. Great sim, but finding it hard to succeed in a mission to shoot down a flight of AEGs. I can knock out both engines on several of them, and then warp back home. But when I hit esc, I find the mission failed and I didn't shoot any down. What do you do to kill those monsters? Thanks.

Oookay, maybe I should hang around to see if they crash before I warp out. But if they crash land, will that count as a kill, or do I have to strafe them?

They would need to crash or explode to be counted as a kill.
