+Wrench Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 (edited) I would like to have one of these items, if at all possible http://thefireknight...chine-257612907 it dosn't need articulation, just needs to "stand there". just something 'kinda quick and dirty' this, of course, is the classic, literature version. if an easier one is needed, maybe maching the one that's actually in the city (those that know, will know. expecially our UK memebers) It's for the ww2 EAW Euro map thanks!! +Fubar512 Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 (edited) Both are incorrect as far as the novel is concerned. The heat ray is supposed to aimed and focused by a crescent-shaped mirror, They actually got that correct in the Steven Spielberg version, as you can see the "crescent mirror" being deployed in a few scenes from that movie. +Wrench Posted March 10, 2013 Author Posted March 10, 2013 and in the UK made version, that actually takes place in the correct Victorian timeframe (effects are crappy tho, on the whole)
+Fubar512 Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 From the novel: "in some way they are able to generate an intense heat in a chamber of practically absolute non-conductivity. This intense heat they project in a parallel beam against any object they choose, by means of a polished parabolic mirror of unknown composition, much as the parabolic mirror of a lighthouse projects a beam of light... it is certain that a beam of heat is the essence of the matter. Heat, and invisible, instead of visible, light. Whatever is combustible flashes into flame at its touch, lead runs like water, it softens iron, cracks and melts glass, and when it falls upon water, incontinently that explodes into steam.
+Fubar512 Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 dollars to donuts, it's some kind maser Uh uh. MASER = Microwave Amplification by Stimulatied Emission of Radiation LASER = Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation It's conceptually closer to the latter, though the "skeleton beam" used by the Martian war machines in the George Pal Adaption used a charged particle beam, going by Clayton Forrestor's description of its effects: "It neutralizes mesons somehow. They're the atomic glue holding matter together. Cut across their lines of magnetic force and any object will simply cease to exist."
