IMHO it is a very good new feature in "Wings Over Flanders Fields",
that a pilot will be sent to a unit, rather than select one for himself.
(though I guess that will also be possible)

This new way we will possibly have to spend some time on two-seaters,
even though we want to become a fighter pilot.
It will be a much more rewarding feeling, when the transfer order finally comes.

And still we will not have the agony of choice - we will simply have to go
where the brass want us to go.
We may arrive at a unit we would never have thought of, in a landscape we had
never explored before.
We may not be happy there at first, but when we prove our good qualities -
maybe we will be trasnsfered or requested by one of the more prominent squadrons,
and finally arrive at a theater where we always wanted to be.

The feeling of having achieved something, of being rewarded for it, should be immense!

That is an interesting thought Olham. I wonder if we will get multiple transfer orders. That would be great, possibly be able to request transfers but be accepted or denied based on our performance.

It's such a seemingly simple thing and yet I suspect it'll make WOFF all the more immersive. In Red Baron 3D I automatically opted to fly in the Red Baron's squadron. Every. Single. Campaign. And while I know I'll be able to do that in WOFF if I so choose, I suspect I'll be leaving that consideration for my superiors to decide.

Transferring from 2-seater squadrons to fighter squadrons would be pretty nice though.

Robert, I guess that's what it will be like.

Some pilots went from 2seaters to a fighter squadron, and when they proved very good there,

they were transfered to one of the task force squadrons.

Maybe they even added the way MvR did it: he had the freedom to select and ask pilots from other Staffeln.

So - if you are very good in a German scout, Manfred might knock on your door one day...

Being a 'Quick Combat' flyer, I don't fully understand this 'immersion' thing, and the ever on-going quest for more of it. Where does it end? When your shell-shocked hand is trembling too much to hold the stick? How about if you don't fly at least one mission every two days, you're charged with desertion and the game shuts down? Whereupon, the Devs convene a Court of Inquiry. Fines could be paid in French brandy. (that's 'real French Brandy') As a stop-gap measure, it is December. One could simply open all the windows in the house. Wives, and girlfriends going bats**t could be treated as flak over the target.

Oh, you definitely belong in BOC my friend!!

He is already in there, and yes - he deserves it! Mwahahahahaaa!!!

Hauksbee, you don't seem to realise what you are missing.

Instead of flying a fun-fair shooter-style minute-sim, you could have the entire war (if you survive it).

You could share life, victories and brandy with the boys from your squad.

Gee, I have been living in OFF for months I guess.

(Yeah, I know what the psychologists would say...)

The fun in Flanders Fields, and Red Baron before it, is in amassing a monument of failed pilot careers and histories in your dossier. Immersion is the best way to go about that IMO!

Here's my idea of immersion...start a campaign on the actual calendar date (minus the year, of course) and fly each mission on the date and time OFF/WOFF says. I might just try that when I retire.

(of course, by then the "W" in WOFF won't stand for Wings...more like Walkers...or maybe Wheelchairs)   grandpa.gif.pagespeed.ce.X5HWgPfEaQ.gif

An interesting twist would be to become successful and develop a local/regional/national reputation then to be transferred to a demoralized or newly established unit with the intention of improving its moral and reputation.

Don't be ridiculous!

(That's in the expansion pack)

I know, I know. I've had it in mind for some time to delve into a campaign, but things seem to get in the way. And yet, I've always fancied the Roland C.II. Maybe now that we're all about to embark on new careers with WOFF, it's time to take the plunge.

.

Hellshade: I take your point. Seeing as I am currently a bachelor again, I can be cavalier about these things. Were it otherwise, I'm far from certain if I could shrug off the flak.

Hauksbee, you can fly a campaign similarly to "QuickFlight", only that the missions

take a little longer. After one sortie you can leave it to continue next day.

If you want short sorties, fly German scouts, based close to the front.

Good to hear. All of it. I had been leery of committing a large block of time to a mission and not be able to finish it. When I take the plunge, I'm certain I'll be with a Roland C.II squadron. I'll be checking in for two-seater advice frequently.

Maybe the new Kasta and Schlasta Staffeln (ground attack units) will offer you short 2seater sorties.

But man, I thought you live retired in aquiet area - take yourself the time for it.

It will be rewarding.

I am retired, and I do live in a quiet, rural area, and 'no', I don't want to jump in with a ground attack unit and get down in the weeds, skimming over trenches with every man-jack in the province taking pot shots at me! Look where it got von Richtofen. I envision a nice placid, over-the-lines photo recon sortie where I can take the flight up to an obscene altitude, snap a few photos and scoot home. Or, maybe an early morning bombing run with heaps of fighter escort. We'll ruffle up the Crumpets a bit and be back before the sun's too high. Then, a tot of single-malt in the Mess, a quick shower, and take the motorcycle into town and see if I can catch Traude Bergman before she has to get up and go to work. That's the kind of two-seater campaign I'm looking forward to. What do you think my chances are?

Not unlike MvR being assigned to Jasta 11.

The thought of a snowball's chance in Hell comes to mind.

Olham, I don't suppose he wants to compress that part of the mission dealing with Traude Bergman!!

Sure! And do it again tomorrow

RAF Lou: I was expecting something like that, but if you're going to wish, wish big.
