DukeIronHand Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 While waiting for WOFF I have been doing some reading and was hit by one of those questions that I always forget to ask... What is the official reason the Germans went from the "Maltese" (flared) cross to the straight edged "Greek" cross in April, 1918?
+elephant Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 The wanted to eliminate every possibility for the eye (from distance) to confuse it with a cockade.
DukeIronHand Posted December 17, 2013 Author Posted December 17, 2013 Sounds reasonable. Thank you for the info.
JimAttrill Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Here is an interesting discussion of exactly how the cross was changed on orders from the top. But nobody seems to know exacty why except a guess that it made German aircraft more recognizable from the ground - rather like the D-day stripes. http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/2001/10696-changes-concerning-german-aircraft-insignia.html
