Geary Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Has anyone found the right combination to get SF1 to work fully in Windows 10 64-bit? I can get it to start, run a mission or mission-in-campaign, but about 80% of the time it either locks up or CDTs when exiting the mission. The best compatibility mode I've discovered for my rig so far is XP SP3. Every other mode seems to lock up or CDT more that XP SP3. Although the compatibility troubleshooter usually chooses Vista it doesn't work better that XP SP3. Doesn't seem to matter if it's a clean install or modded or where I run the game from it still CDTs most of the time. If I can't find the fix for SF1 in Windows 10 64-bit, I will probably retro-build an XP computer to run the game. Just my luck I've gotten rid of dozens of old XP computers over the past few years. Trotski Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 works just fine in win 7, win 10 is a nightmare, bin it forthwith and do the Xp, or win 7 dance, win 7 is probably better as it is still being supported for now by Microcrooks....sorry soft. Quote
Geary Posted April 1, 2016 Author Posted April 1, 2016 trotski00, I'll most likely build an XP computer rather than Windows 7. Microsoft says it still supports Windows 7 but I've reloaded a couple dozen Windows 7 computers in the past few months and Microsoft has strangled the Windows 7 updates. Updating Windows 7 is now a freaking struggle. Updating the initial Windows 7 install to Windows 10 is much easier. Windows 10 is here to stay. And it runs SF2 with few problems. xreal, Thanks, but I have Windows XP. I need a Windows XP compatible computer to put it on. I've had dozens in the past few years and got rid of them all. Quote
Trotski Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 XP is good too mate, if that's what you have then use it, but I was just saying Win 7 because XP doesn't support some of the features that 7 does not support directX 11 either which can be a downer for some things, I have an XP based pc as well as this one for running older stuff on, like Silent Hunter 3 , which has a few problems with Win 7 . and some of the older stuff, but Win 7 is still supported, and is stable too, so if you can get your hands on a copy ( by fair means or foul ) it is worth considering. Geary Posted April 1, 2016 Author Posted April 1, 2016 Windows 7 is my favorite MS operation system. Worked great first time out. Maybe I'll experiment and load an extra computer with Windows 7 for SF1 and conduct a trial to see which runs it better. Hate to loose SF1. Still gives me pleasure and I've got campaigns/installs in SF1 we don't have in SF2 and plenty of YAP missions that don't run in SF2. Quote
savagkc Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 Guess i'll have to find me a win7 PC also. Out of 3 games, SFP1, WOV, and First Eagles, only SFP1 will play just as a clean install. When i copy all the mods, weapons, guns into it, it crashes. WOV, clean install, is a no go at all, never even comes but does change screen resolution. First Eagles is same as WOV. Tried all resolutions from 600x800 and up to max - no change. Tried all compatibility modes from XP to 10, no luck there either. Beginning to suspect DirectX may be at least part of problem. clif Quote
Geary Posted April 24, 2016 Author Posted April 24, 2016 savagkc, I've built one Windows 7 machine and two XP Pro computers to try SF1 on. Haven't had time to extensively experiment with all three, yet. The Windows 7 machine works great. Over 30 SF1 installs and no problems so far except with some YAP missions but YAP has always been a bit buggy. It's running an Intel i3 CPU, 16GB DDR3 RAM and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 video card with 2GB GDDR5 RAM. For the XP machine I was hoping to find one with an Intel E series dual core cpu running between 2.8 and 3.0 GHz. I've only found a couple with Pentium D chips. Running XP Pro 32-bit on those with 4GB DDR2 RAM and one has a Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 card with 2GB DDR5. Haven't loaded SF1 on it yet. But the first XP machine with a 2.8GHz Pentium D bogs down a bit set maxed out in the game. It only has a GTX 740 card with 2GB DDR3 RAM. I'm thinking the 3.0GHz Pentium D with the GTX 650 card will do better. I'd also like to try XP Pro 64-bit on one to take advantage of the extra 512MB of RAM the 32-bit version doesn't use. With the Windows 7 computer running SF1 so well, seems like I don't need the XP machines at this point, but think I'll keep one handy. Never know when I'll need it. Like you, I suspect DirectX and/or video being part of the problem with SF1 crashing in Windows 10. It would be nice to get this problem fixed and only have to run one gaming rig, but for SF1 I'll run two if I have to. Quote
savagkc Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 ACTD, I just bought a IBuyPower gaming system iBUYPOWER - Desktop - Intel Core i7 - 16GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive + 240GB Solid State Drivefor my personal use. My other 2 systems, gateway (gaming) and an old HP all have win10. Should have kept win8.1 since SF series had no problems. I volunteer to do PC repairs for a senior citizens computer club and sometimes they recycle their older PC's. Maybe i can a recycle one with win7. Then if can repair or soup it up enough, i'll use it for SFP games. savagcl Quote
Geary Posted April 26, 2016 Author Posted April 26, 2016 savagekc, NICE new rig. This should keep you flying in SF2 for a while. You will probably need to build a Windows 7 machine to run SF1. Good on you for volunteering your time to help senior citizens with their computers. I work on computers for spare parts or desserts. Now is pie season. Geary Quote
savagkc Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 Geary, I did manage to get SFP1 and Korea working but- cannot get any mods to work in SFP1 and korea will sometimes crash when closing. I had almost every plane, mods and new ones in sfp1, gonna miss them. I'll keep working at it tho. Best settings was XP, SP3 for me. savagcl Quote
dannavy85 Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 I got it to work in Win 10 by not allowing it to install to "Programs" Instead I created a file in my documents called "Old Games" and installed it to that. My only problem now is the occasional crashes with WOE that happens after mission completions but hey...as long as I can burn my hair flying intruders, who cares. Quote
