Flying fish have it rough...

In Kon-Tiki Thor Heyerdahl talked about the flying fish. The crew of Kon-Tiki ate a lot of them due to often finding them each morning having glided onto the deck during the night. One time a flying fish almost landed right in their frying pan!

I recall a charter skipper in the Florida Keys who refused to run at much more than an idle after dark, due to physical encounters with airborne houndfish, balao, and other half-beaks.  While not capable of "flight" in the manner of a flyingfish, they have a habit of being attracted to lights, and have often lept aboard boats. Because of their beaks, this behavior makes them a hazard, and more than a few people have been impaled by them.

Hammered from all sides, one can feel sorry for them just like the inhabitants of Allepo in Syria. It's like they are under siege and can't do nothing to get out of the situation. It's common for humans to sympathize with others but no so common for us to be concerned about the plight and daily struggle of animals both in the wild and in a domsetic situation.
