EA-6A Intruder

Recommended Posts

Guest IndioBlack

I just downloaded Column5's EA-6A Intruder which is optimised for IRON HAND missions. I realise this is still probably a work in progress, but I do not note any extra features in this Intruder that enables identifying SAMs or Radars. For instance there is still no RWR.

The other thing is that I understand the EA-6A (known as The Electric Intruder) was mainly designed to jam enemy electronic sensors for Strike Packages, and not take part in attacks.

Any comments?

It does have RWR. At least mine does and that was the package that was submitted to C5 for him to post on his site. It does jam and it can take out radars with Shrikes. So what I am not sure what you are looking for? Can you maybe expand a bit more?

Okay, that's good news, because it means that I have a faulty package, and it hopefully can be fixed. Unfortunately, I don't have a website so I can't post a screen pic to show the lack of RWR. Can you tell me where your RWR scope is attached?

What I have is the Radar screen that works as normal, and then below that I have what seems to be a circular Nav screen that is completely white.

When over Vietnam, I can see enemy SAMS outside, but I'm not getting audio warnings or visual warnings in the cockpit. However if I get high enough and close enough, I can hit a red-boxed target with a shrike.

I definitely get audio warnings in the standard A-6 that comes with WOV.

I un-rared the package and popped the single EA-6A folder in the objects/aircraft folder as instructed. I didn't do anything else. Is there a further step I'm missing? Are there some folders that should actually go somewhere else?

I notice that in the Avionics.ini, the second line calls for an "A-6A_rwr.bmp", however, there is no such bitmap in the huge collection of bitmaps that exist in the "cockpit" folder. Could this be the problem?

If it's using the WoV A-6A 'pit there will be no visual RWR (as it's an 'A" model pit, afterall), simply a warning tone and possibly a warning light.

There are no warning tones with the EA-6A, whereas there are with the A-6A: I tried both aircraft in similar missions and noted the difference.

In the cockpit folder that comes with the EA-6A there is a tga file that contains a number of lit buttons that appear to form a sort of warning panel. However none of these lit buttons ever show up whilst you are under threat. The EA-6A was blown from under me by a missile that I only heard about due to the intercom chatter, whereas in the A-6A, I clearly heard warning tones and was able to perform evasive manouevres.

Something appears to be missing in my EA-6A, which I downloaded from Column5, and I was hoping that those who have a working EA-6A might be able to help me identify what they have that does work, and how I might be able to modify mine to work in the same way.

Sorry I,m late replying to this. The EA6A was used only for stand-off jambing. It was to valuable and to few (only about 26 built) to risk in IronHand. The main IronHand aircraft was the A6B. It was loaded with assortment of hardware, missiles and rockets. It would fly around at low altitude, 10 to 20 thou., hoping to get shot at,so it could shoot back.

I once flew escort to 4 A-7's going after a SAM site. Straight in, jammers pointed forward set on all freq's and bandwiths. One pass and the get the H--- out of there.

I flew EA6A's LinebackerI and II

Man that had to been hairy work, how effective was the jamming against the North Vietnamese AD?

The EA-6A was as effective as the Early EA-6B's. There is a well known story from the 1972 Linebacker II raids when a couple VAQ-132 EA-6B's off the USS America was flying off the about 35nm off the coast and while providing Offensive Jamming to two alpha strikes when the crew noticed and heard multiple SAM calls. They also realized that they couldn't jam all the track signals, so instead they jammed the terminal guidance frequency of those missiles along with the command detonate signals that were sent from the ground stations. Through out the Hanoi, Haiphong region pilots reported SAMs going ballistic right past them on thier way to who the heck knew where with out even exploding. During next port visit to the Philippines those crews couldn't buy a drink.

As Southernap says, the EA6A was very good against the North Vietnam AD. We would have 2 aircraft on station, pinpoint jamming individual SAM sites. From 1965 to 1973,one aircraft was lost while VMCJ (Cottonpicker, our callsign) was on station. The Airgroup CAG's would not go "Feetdry" untill we were on station. The USAF even had us escort B-52 raids occassionally.

One EA6A was shot down during Vietnam War.I was there and knew the crew. We figure a Mig got them on the way back from up North. The SAM radars would track aircraft and talk to the Mig drivers. The Migs would turn on their radars just before shooting. By 1972 the North had learned their lessons pretty well.
