JA was the code for JG 71 (fighter).

DA is the correct Code for JaboG 31 (fighter bomber).

Thanks Carlo. Is there a resource for looking up these codes? Also, when did the xx+xx codes with a white outline start?

In 1968 (01.01.1968) the coding system changed to the numbers only system.

But in (late) 1966 & 1967 the Letter code was sometimes also white outlined.

Here is what the Letter codes are assignet to:

Wow. When I did this I had no idea that in 1958 the F-105 was "included in a shortlist of 14 types selected for German evaluation at Luke AFB, Arizona, but was rejected along with the Convair F-102 and F-106 and the English Electric Lightning as being too expensive." Republic tried again later in the same year adding in sub-contracting deals but the Bonn government did not take up the offer. Offers were also made to the Belgian and Dutch governments quoting a unit cost of $1.4 million. BTW the fly-away unit cost of the F-105B at the end of 1959 was $5.6 million excluding cumulative modification costs.
