  1. DCS AH-64D out for Early Access

    It works very well in VR. Slaving the gun to the pilot's helmet sight is fun.
  2. I have played it in VR on my Ryzen 5800, but I have never looked at the task manager. I can't perform the same exact test because it doesn't have the Vietnam Air & Ground War installed, but I can play the same mission.

I just ran SF2V Vietnam Air & Ground War mod using the stock Longest Day Part I mission at 4K with Ultimate graphics settings (mirror, shadows, the works!) using my old i5-4690K and GTX 1080 8GB. All 4 cpu cores show 100%, RAM is about 6-6.5 GB in use, gpu is at 40% usage with less than 1.9 GB VRAM in use. I am using the "FAST" mode for Vsync that allows greater than my monitor's refresh rate of 60 Hz without tearing. I am seeing an avg of 83-85 fps but the real-time indication is mainly 90 fps with a low of 67 fps and a high of 125 fps. Other than the cpu being pegged, the system is mostly idling.
  4. The limit for me is the monitor's refresh rate. My flat panel display is 60 Hz and I can hold that all day long with max quality graphics and hi-resolution mods. When I use VorpX to run SF2 in VR, I can hold 90 fps steady with my Reverb G2, which looks amazing. I was already able to do that with my older PC with a core i5 and GTX 1080 with 8 GB RAM, but I haven't bothered to check VRAM, RAM, or cpu usage at all.

    Flyable aircraft do not land in enemy territory. They were hit. They landed immediately. They were shot down. Presumably the only reason they made it to the ground without crashing is because of the redundancy. But most certainly, some indication such as hydraulic pressure, fuel gauge, engine temp, etc. told them it was time to land... which is far safer than any ejection.
  6. There was a time when the US weapon effectiveness was very close to historic numbers from Vietnam and Israel. Toward the end of Strike Fighters development, financial considerations drove Third Wire to focus more on making the game fun for casual players than hard core people wanting realism. Suddenly, early AIM-9s and AIM-7s behaved a lot more like later AIM-9s and AIM-120s.

    The Ka-52 was hit pretty bad on the left side. They surely would have flown home if they could, but shrapnel went through everything aft of the cockpit. They were probably losing a critical system when they put it down on the ground. The avionics were still energized, but that doesn't mean the control systems were working very well.

    The video has been debunked. But I have now seen multiple reports that the Ukraine government had officially claimed 6 planes and 2 helicopters downed. I have seen images of one of the helicopters, a Ka-52. It is not much of a discussion if you tell people not to enter it because you don't like what they have said. Government claims are not facts, but they have not been debunked unless you count the opposing government's claims. Both sides are subject to false propaganda, but I will give Ukraine the benefit of the doubt until objective evidence proves otherwise. I did not see claims from the Ukraine government of a single pilot scoring all of those kills. Nor did the claims specify what types were shot down or what types achieved the kills. For all we know, all of the claimed kills may have been achieved by AAA and SAMs. I know the Ka-52 appears to have been taken down by a man-pad SAM.

    It was hard to believe MiG-17s were taking down F-4s and F-105s, but it happened. There is no substitute for good pilots and good tactics. I doubt either side of the current conflict has had much money to spend on training and maintenance, so the winner will be whoever figures out how to use their strengths against the enemy's weaknesses. At present, I have seen no facts, only hearsay and speculation. But I don't doubt that it is possible for a MiG-29 to beat an Su-35 for the same reasons that a MiG-25 was able to down an F/A-18 Hornet.

    I like the early production F-86F: they have the upgraded engine, but the slatted wing of the F-86E. I much prefer the original wing to the "6-3". I just want the most power possible in the early F-86F. As for the 20mm cannons: the ones installed in the F-86s were nothing but trouble. They tried out 4x20mm in Korea and had horrible results, much like the trials with the F4U-1C in WW2. If the installation had adequate ammo, doesn't jam in the cold air, and doesn't stall the engine, then I will take 20mm cannons. Even the F-8 Crusader had endless problems with the 20mm. The A-7 finally switched to the M61 to get rid of the 20mm cannon problems inherited from the F-8.

    Sorry I never saw and replied to this post. The answer to the riddle of P3d is Microsoft and lawsuits. Lockheed licensed the source code for MS FSX to save time and money. Microsoft agreed to do this with the stipulation that Lockheed would not directly compete with MS FSX or its descendants. Lockheed dramatically improved the FSX codebase by transitioning to a native 64-bit platform allowing use of modern CPUs and RAM capacity to permit higher performance and/or better terrains and aircraft. So, Lockheed as a legal stipulation that the simulator they are selling is for "students" only to satisfy the contractual requirement not to compete with MS flight sims. Of course, anyone can be a "student" and Lockheed has sold P3d to anyone and everyone that wants to "study" flying. I have not heard of one case of Microsoft or its lawyers going after Lockheed or their customers because someone falsely claimed to be a "student". So, for all intents and purposes, P3d student edition is really a consumer level package available to everyone and you can see countless people migrated from FSX to P3d because Microsoft abandoned flight sims for 10+ years. Now, FS2020 is available. In almost every way FS2020 is better than P3d out of the box. But FS2020 does not yet have the depth of support that FSX/P3d has had for so many years. If VRS TacPack comes to FS2020 as well as the Milviz and/or SimWorks F-4 Phantoms, I will no longer have any use for P3d. As it stands, P3d migrated to V5+ for some time and VRS TacPack just now caught up. I never migrated to V5 because without TacPack and the F-4s, it has little value to me even though it is supposed to improve my biggest problem with P3d: low performance, particularly when using detailed terrain like Orbx and even worse performance when using VR. In my posts from two years ago, I estimated that a DCS F-4 was two or more years away from being available for purchase and download. Heatblur has admitted that the F-4 was the secret aircraft they had been working on the past few years and that DCS F-4E should be released in 2022 and additional versions are planned. This has made me think twice about continuing to spend money buying P3d V5+ and the associated upgrades such as VRS TacPack for P3d V5+. I have never flown it very much and already spend most of my time flying DCS. With the release of DCS F-4, P3d becomes obsolete, while Strike Fighters 2 remains on my hard drive due to its amazing library of flyable aircraft and historically accurate combat environments. I have even used VorpX to get Strike Fighters 2 to halfway work in VR with the dated terrain resulting in outstanding VR performance: pegged at 90 fps with no stuttering despite using max graphics quality settings.

    Prop aircraft would have to use a different approach. A pair could try to push with wingtips. Or you could come up and try to use the vertical stabilizer to push on the wing... that would probably be the safest possibility.

    Tom Cooper has a strong bias... period. But the other information I have has a strong USA bias and the truth is often somewhere in between. I have no sources for air combat history other than these books, crappy tv shows, and the internet. So, I take it all in and filter it as best as I can given that I am biased like anyone else. I have always had a strong interest in May 10, 1972 since I owned the tactical air combat board game, Air War, that had both the Death of Major Lodge and Duke Cunningham vs Col. Toon as scenarios. Tom Cooper and István Toperczer tell a slightly different version of the death of Major Lodge, and at this point I believe their version is probably more accurate than the US version. I take everything either of them reports with a grain of salt because they are essentially echoing Communist and Islamic propaganda, but that helps even out the US propaganda I have always had to accept.

    There is so much irony to the new F-15 acquisitions by the USAF. 1st: The F-15A was the "hi" fighter in the "hi-lo" mix, meaning it cost too much to replace the F-4 with just F-15s, so the USAF was forced to buy a mix of F-15s and F-16s to get the number of aircraft it wanted. The F-15 was very expensive, only the F-14 cost more. Unlike the F-4, the F-15 was only purchased by a handful of foreign countries due to its high cost. Now, in a world where 5th gen fighters are far more expensive, the F-15 has become the "lo" part of the "hi-lo" mix. 2nd: The F-22 was the replacement for the F-15. However, the extremely high cost of production versus the lack of a credible threat restricted production to less than 200 aircraft. 1/4 the number desired to replace air superiority F-15Cs. With budget growing ever tighter, there is not enough money to justify operating and maintaining such a small number of aircraft compared to the other types in service. So, the F-22 will be retired to cut costs. Its replacement is the F-15. I suspect that this is the first time in history that an aircraft has replaced its replacement, especially considering how old the original design is. Imagine bringing back and upgraded P-40 to replace the F-4, that is the kind of time frame we are talking about with using an updated 1970s Eagle to replace the 2000s F-22.
  19. Most of the reviews are from XBox gamers. I would like to see a review from someone who owns similar competing hardware, such as Saitek. I have never gotten a yoke/throttle quadrant as I have always been focused on fighters with a joystick, but I wouldn't mind having a yoke for civil sims and some not so typical combat aircraft.
  20. Nothing to be sorry about. Just in the process of moving on with my life. Beyond getting my son through the next 3 1/2 years of high school, I will be free to do what I want with my time and money for the first time since I got married. The competition for my funds is flight sim stuff, 1981 Corvette restoration and operation. If my cash flow is positive enough after the divorce, I might finally get a real pilot license.
  21. I am in the process of getting a divorce. Once my wife moves out, I will finally be able to finish my F-4E sim pit I have been working on for ages. The immediate task is to get my throttle integrated into a USB controller and restore the stick to operational capability, this time using a hall effect sensor based system to eliminate the problems I had with having to clean industrial grade pots that wear out and get dirty quickly after my kind of use/abuse.
  22. It is about time. Too many years without my favorite aircraft. Until this release, SF2, essentially a 20-year old game, is still the best F-4 combat flight simulator available despite being only a "lite" sim. If you are happy pushing buttons there are a couple of decent F-4 options for MSFS/P3d, but their usefulness is limited in a civil flight sim, even with VRS TacPack providing basic radar and weapons functionality. Heatblur's F-14A is one of the best modules in the game. While the "Jester AI" isn't perfect, it generally works well enough that it is far better than having no AI at all. Of course, having a real human RIO is much better and more fun. It is only natural that Heatblur would produce the F-4 since there is so much overlap in functionality and operations. I can't wait to get the F-4E and then see which variant they will be working on next.
  23. It looks fantastic. But you know how many years this has already been in development? 3d model being changed / retextured again. So, when is the release and how finished/correct is it at that point? I can't wait to get it, but it has been a very long wait. I wish their F-8J Crusader was being released soon, too.
