An Ancient Evil is rising from the shadows of the past. . . Sauron, the Dark Lord, will soon walk the earth once more. . . The Fellowship must be reformed in a new guise to combat the great Enemy. . . If any of our resident Kiwis have any suggestions for this map/campaign, now's the time. . . And if anyone fancies painting a Nazgul on the side of an Su-27, I'm sure I could put it to use Cheers all, Baltika

WW2 WIPS
Baltika replied to Baltika's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Prop Heads Forum
Thanks for the suggestion. Sadly, I had to spend a bit of time recently removing all the DAT planes from the BoB v0.60 package, so I think the days of an all-in-one-install are gone as none of those a/c can be included. I am planning simply an update as a separate download for v0.61. It is mostly .ini edits so there is no point in repacking the whole thing again, although I may do that eventually for those newcomers who do not yet have a BoB install set up. I am no FM expert, but there are a few simple tweaks which can be applied to the 109E FM to make a few improvements. They were worked out by Heck and B Bandy RFC and are detailed in the 109 FM thread now in the prophead forum. They are certainly worth trying out. Time for modding is limited atm so expect the BoB updates when you see them. @Wrench, thanks for moving those threads over. Nice to have it all in one place. There are a few others which may be of interest. I can flag em up as I come across them. Cheers, Baltika -

Wolf's WW2 Aircraft
Baltika replied to crimsonstar49's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Looks like there has been a slight re-organisation of the WW2 a/c downloads. There had been some "loose" files which have now been consolidated into the main d/l section - at least I think they have, otherwise a few have gone awol. But it seems that WOLF257 has re-uploaded his WW2 plane pack: http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=4363 Thanks Wolf -

The update is really intended for SFP1 at 06 patch level, and, sorry, will not include updated FMs, although I may tweak the 109 FM in particular to resolve a few issues mentioned in the above 109 FM thread, and to fix armanent issues for the BoB timeframe. I will also probably include the Stallmoment fix where required, as, like you, I have ported my BoB install over to WoE at Oct 08 patch level, and am really enjoying the new AI. Makes the campaign even tougher to survive For a full list if what's included, take a look at my most recent post in the BoB campaign thread. Mainly it is updates to the OOB to include many more BoB squadrons, to increase the number of flyable types, and to implement my "all RAF squadrons markings fix -

Good to have a "prop" -er home here BTW, these might be worth a move too, cheers Wrench http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=31417 Kursk http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=29293 Midway http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=31665 BF 109 FM discussion http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=31823 WW2 Invasion of Japan http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=25381 WW2 Nightfighter discussion http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=30473 WW2 Philippines campaign thread http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=25617 Burma Air War Thread http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=34534 Pearl Harbor map/campaign thread http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=35678 Brewster Buffalo http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=35233 New Hurricane markings by mppd These all relate to various WW2 themed topics, and have some useful info. If you can find the time, it may assist to have them here. There are others, but these are the ones I could find quickly. Thanks again for the dedicated forum section. Cheers, Baltika -
The AI will fly the WW2 medium and heavy bombers pretty well for level bombing - just watch airfield attacks by the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain campaign  For player flyable it is a bit more difficult, but there are a couple of bomb-sight mods which are worth checking out. Get 'em here: http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=1462 http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=1483 Cheers to dfang for these. There are a few others in the weapons section of the d/ls, again by dfang.

Tunisia terrain upgrade WIP
Baltika replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Prop Heads Forum
Well, speaking purely from the campaign building perspective, I suggest both adding Gepard's sea-level airfield at each of the existing fleet target areas, and add a separate carrierstation targetarea near to each of the existing ones, but with no ships etc positioned there. For me, that is the best of both worlds - seaplanes and the like can be assigned in the campaign file to use the surface invisible airstrip, whilst Ican also use the nearby empty carrierstation to position carrier-based units and allow for the full range of carrier ops as currently supported by TW, i.e. take offs and landings from a moving carrier. Looking forward to this upgrade, thanks for your hard work on these terrains Cheers, Baltika -

Well, I posted a very basic wip screenshot of a cut & paste WoE mainscreen Ostfront conversion - not a menu set, just the mainscreen. I can knock the thing together for release, but I suggest you d/l kout's Fighters Anthology menus template, and just copy in the pictures you want to that. That way, you can do a whole Ostfront screenset with minumun hassle. Cheers, Baltika -
Wrench Note: I retitled and am going to sticky this thread, so we can have a Works In Progress Thread of our very own! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks to Dave & Eric for setting up a little home from home for us propheads. To celebrate, I thought I would make a WIP list of my current stuff so everyone knows what to expect from the Baltika production line. These are listed in no particular order, and just don't ask me when they'll be done, OK Terrain WIPs: -Kursk -WW2 Malaysia (covering Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Java, Borneo, Celebes, Flores, Timor, Siam, French Indo-China, and the Philippines) -Full-scale Philippines and Formosa (completely new build) -Full-scale Burma/Indian Frontier (again a new build, this is a long ways off, and is really only necessary because Edward's existing map doesn't cover the Indian frontier properly for mid-war campaigns covering the last-ditch British defence of India) Campaign WIPs: North Africa 1940-42 (nearly done) Operation Zitadel - Kursk '43 Battle of the Mareth Line Secret Weapons Over California Burning Sands 1940 The Battle for Guadalcanal - Operation Watchtower 1942 Channel Front 1940-1944 I will also continue to update the old Battle of Britain campaign - there is a new version very close to release right now. I also have a notion to make a "BoB2 - Secret Weapons Over Blighty" campaign to use a WW2 version of my British Isles map, featuring a full-scale Nazi invasion of the UK, but that is really just a gleam in my eye right now. Suggestions, requests, ideas, are all welcome. Also any feedback on my previously released campaigns would be gratefully received, as I don't have time to thoroughly playtest them from every possible perspective. Tally-Ho! Baltika

Welcome aboard the TW prop-fest If you haven't already, check out this interim fix for the old prop FMs: http://avhistory.org/communityserver/forums/t/694.aspx That will at least enable the AI to handle most planes without endlessly falling into unrecoverable spins. You can still push the envelope too far, but at least with that little fix in place you have an even chance of recovering from spins.

StartNumber= controls the start point for the individual a/c numbers for that squadron for decalling purposes. So, startnumber=0 will have that squadron's migs with number 00, 01, 02 on the nose. Startnumber=32 will give you numbers 32, 33, 34 etc on the nose. I think the stock game comes with up to 100 or so numbers in this way. It is useful for e.g. lots of different a/c serial numbers where you have a variety of squadrons flying the same plane.

Well, I'm no expert on the Vietnam air war. I do know that while the latest SF2:V patch has fixed the Da Nang airfield strike bug, it remains an issue for WoV, even patched up to the most recent level. TK has said it may get fixed in the next round of patches, but that is at least a year or two away, even if the older series of titles gets patched again. I seem to recall somebody saying that it is frustrating because the rules of engagement did not in fact permit airfield strikes, but I could be completely wrong about that.

There are only a small number of MiG squadrons in this campaign, which reflects the historical situation. In fact, only 7 enemy air units as opposed to about 154 US & S. Vietnamese air units. So, air opposition is always going to be thin on the ground, and I think TK said somewhere you can expect it to be completely wiped out relatively early on in the campaign. The best way to get strong air opposition is to increase the number of enemy squadrons, and place them all round the available enemy airbases. Just copy & paste from an existing enemy squadron, making sure to increase the [AirUnitxxx] entry in sequence. You may also want to edit the UnitName= entry to give them a distinct name. Then edit the BaseArea= entry for each of your new squadrons to distribute them around the available enemy airbases. Also, increase the MaxAircraft= and StartAircraft= entry for each enemy air unit, to something like 16 or even 32 for each. I think in stock Rolling Thunder, the MiG units are restricted to one or two airbases, which again I think is intended to reflect the historical position. But for playability, I agree, the more bad guys around, the better

Yup, the PTO certainly has a strong attraction for me, although I'm certainly looking forward to your North Africa rebuild. That's most timely, as my long, long, overdue North Africa campaign is the current one being worked on. But, perhaps next up for PTO should be the Battle of Leyte Gulf -

Personally, I use SFG patched to v 083006 for my baseline WW2 installs. I am slowly migrating stuff over to WOE patched to Oct 08, thanks to the work being done by the AvHistory guys on WW2 prop FMs. It is common knowledge that the older WW2 FMs behave rather "oddly" with post Oct 08 patch builds, but gregoryp has come up with this fix which has resolved 99% of my Oct 08 WW2 FM problems: http://avhistory.org/communityserver/forums/t/694.aspx Frankly, the improvements in AI behaviour, rendering, parked a/c to strafe, and campaign improvements (known aces, ease of setting frontlines for each campaign, no need to define co-ords for strategic nodes) are just too good to miss out on, IMHO. So, for your WW2 Pacific build, I say go for WOE Oct 08, add Wrench's WW2 Wep pack (you will need to run it through the newest wep editor to get it to show up right), CA_Stary's WW2 effects pack, then pick and choose your planes etc, checking to see if they need the data ini edit flagged up by gregoryp. As for terrains, etc, for pacific theatre there is Gepard's Midway terrain, which has a lot of the ships and stuff you will need, plus a few by Edward, including Philippines, New Guinea, Solomons, Okinawa and Darwin. Wrench has a Central Pacific and Pearl Harbor terrain, and has also built terrain upgrades for many of Edward's. As for campaigns, well, some guy called Baltika has put together a Midway campaign and a Philippines campaign, which I dare say might be worth a look and one for Burma if you fancy flying for the AVG  There are also many Midway-specific skins by Wrench both here at CA and at Wrench's toolbox. I should say also that the AvHistory guys have released beta models with their FMs for testing in the latest TW builds, including a P-51, Zero and Ki-43, so grab them and post your feedback on the AvHistory site. Tally-ho, Baltika Duh Should've known Wrench would beat me to the punch on this one -
Yes, Wolf has the earlier P-40B (under filename Tomahawk) in his WW2 plane pak. He has left pretty clear instructions about non-distribution of his models, so yes, you ought to comply with that and leave his .lod out of your mod. Skins and .ini files have generally been regarded as free to mod, although it is also considered polite to give credit to the originator of said files. Nice Russian skins, BTW
