Fair-Use Modding
Wrench replied to column5's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Mostly, that depends on the group. If they have a policy of NOT allowing use, or use only by permissions, that rule must be abided by. Written permission MUST be obtained via emails, or forum postings, and MUST be contained in any readme that the mod is to be used in. If they've LEFT entiretly, gone off and done something else, MY opinion is, it may be considered 'abandonware', and is open for mods. HOWEVER -you knew that was coming!!!- I'd most certainly make double-damm sure that you list them as the original creator in the readme of your mod. I've done this myself. If they're still IN the community, but have removed their mods from General Use, again, their wishes MUST be respected. Hence, once again, the need for proper readmes. This goes for EVERYONE!!!! To you joining us in the Freeware Accords Treaty (FAT), welcome!!! It can only strengthen the community, create more and BETTER mods, and increase the life-span of our favorite hobby. My personal thanks! Wrench kevin stein -
moddifing an airplane
Wrench replied to pato poli's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Ok, as promised, here's some screenies: basic aircraft: Now, for the pit and HUDs: The avionics ini, and attendant tgas are a kind of "kitbash" between Julheilms original Kestral's and TMF's F-16A-1/10. The CCIP works, but just like all the others, it 'hangs off the HUD' onto the main panel Also, looking at the aircraft further, it'll need all new decals for tail serials. I've added a few new Argentine-only, nation specific weapons; more that what's in the "Loadout and Fixes Thread". Argie-only Lima winder, Shrike, MER & TER. Gun aim angles have been adjusted to almost fire directly though the aim-dot. We'll also need to get permissions from TMF for use of their cockpit tgas (since the avionics ini is 90% F-16!), as well as checking with Juls on using his Kestral pit. If so, then it should be pretty easy to change the "LASER" weapons armed light to read "A-G", so you know you got bombs selected. Make new decals, and off we go. Wrench kevin stein -
WOE:BC F-16C Block 30
Wrench replied to KingAlbert's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mission/Campaign Building Discussion
I'd say drop tanks on EVERY configuration...most of the pics, ala Desert Strom, always showed the tanks. For strike, I"d use 2 1000 lbers; I know that's a little 'lite', (exepting for weight!), but seems more likely. Without them, in Real Life , they're range would be considerably shortened without the drop tanks. CAS, I'd unload the CBUs ( and like CharlieLima, one of my favs!), and go for Mavericks. And again, drop tanks and winders on the tip rails. Just my thoughts.. Wrench kevin stein -

???? Does your Formosa.ini look like this: Assuming, of course, you've installed the Formosa terrain folder into WoE. That's how it is in mine, and I have all the little buildings and terrain tiles and whatnot. Wrench kevin stein -
Problems with ships for my Midway terrain
Wrench replied to Gepard's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
This is what I used on the Libya terrain, for a 'docked' carrier... This is for the stock, WoV Essex's. You'll note, unfortunatley, the lack of damaged or destroyed models. Actually, all the carriers seem to lack damaged/destroyed models. I tried creating damaged/destroyed textrues, via a copied/edited lod, but never got it to work. What I don't know, is if those entries override the ship's data ini entries... Did you change the data ini to make it 'damageable/sinkable'??? I'd thought they were un-vulnerable. There's been some discussion about making a copy of the ship, for use as a terrain object, by removing the flight deck/airfield references, so it could be damaged and sunk. Then, unfortunately, it looses the ability to launch/recover aircraft. I like the idea of 'medium runway', but shouldn't it be set to 'small', so Betty's and other large bombers can't use it? But definatly, change the 'ini' entry to lod. - nice catch, Heck!!! Wrench kevin stein -

Have you looked in the Knowledge Base, perhaps, this thread? http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=12230 read the WHOLE article, especially my notes/comments/instructions in the 2nd post. I think that'll point you to a fix. Wrench kevin stein -

Wrench replied to New Guy's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
No, you're missing the rack. TOW pods are rocket pods, as far as the game engine is concerned Look for "Quad_Rack" Wrench kevin stein -

I have an AR that was done by some guy named =belive this or not!= "Ravens**t", from 2005. Based on the stock A-4F, it's got AA & AG, but no HUD, as it uses the 60 dll. Be super easy to switch it over to 70 for WoI, you'd just need the all the HUD bits, and hopefully get them to fit on the columator glass. Of course, that means SF/WoV/WoE users are out in the cold...AG radar-wise. Of course, having the correct multi-MFD cockpit ain't gonna happen unitl we either get someone to build one or modify it from something else. We could probably live with the single screen for a while I'll try to get a screenie of it up later. As he left the community shortly after, I consider this mod 'up for grabs'. If you don't need a HUD....this'll work fine Wrench kevin stein -
where to put the new pilot model and skin?
Wrench replied to Miracles's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
PLEASE DO NOT POST IN THE KNOWLEDGE BASE -- you questions should go here, in the main forums. Thank you. Soulfreak is correct, all pilot 'bits' go in the games main /Aircraft folder (both lods, the ini and the bmp) To add the pilot figure, if you haven't figured this part out, requires the aircraft in question's ***_Data.ini. Here's the exact instructions, from one of my pilot figures (well, this readme is used on ALL them ...) Have fun! Wrench kevin stein -

Foxhound pit labeling
Wrench replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Yes, please! That would go nice into the 31BS I built, which apparently needs a HUD. Definately needs a up-rez on those panels. Resize, sharpen, retouch as needed. The only problem I forsee, is the calibrations for speed, altitude and distance. In my experiments using the F-4EJ Kai, and the F-15 displays, avionics70.dll is ONLY calibrated in US standards, meaning the insturments (if recalibrated in Metric) won't match the HUD displays It's a small thing, and one can easily do the conversions in their head. Wrench replied to 76.IAP-Blackbird's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Here's the pod on an old experiment I did -- years ago Now that we have Raz's, with it's mulitplace cockpit, the AD-5W could be recreated, as it dosen't need the extra tail fins. This one was to represent the AEW-1 (or as USN AD-3W) of the FAA, using MontyCZs old A-1H. The pic is showing what other things are needed. I repainted the Scooter hump for the dorsal expansion, and the 2 thingys on the tail are for the extral fins. I'll find the bits and data stuff, and get the to you as soon as i can. It's the same 'pod' I used on the unreleased PB-1W Navy Fortress. I think I even stuck it on a TBF, but can't seem to find it.... Wrench kevin stein -
Voodoo Over Europe and Madagascar
Wrench replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
No, I don't think SSP ever did an In Action, but theres loads of others: SSP: Modern Military Aircarft #5002 McDonnell F-101 Voodoo (covers all variants) Osprey Color: USAF Fighter Intereceptors - Cold War Warriors (superb Centruy series photos!!!) Detail & Scale #21: McDonnell F-101 Voodoo (great for modelers, and 3d builders!) These are just the ones I have. I'm sure there's more somewhere For the movie buffs, at the end of "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming", a pair of Voodoos overfly the sub as they're being escorted out of Glouscter (probably birds from Otis or somewhere close by) Wrench kevin stein -

Well, that's what I meant. NOT the whole plane. It worked before, it should work after. At worst, just add Jug's light corrections to the original, and disregard the rest Anyone tried the pak I uploaded? Just so I know I've not totally wasted my time?? hey X-Ray, you might want to look at that Gundata entry again....the caliber is off: [GunData133] TypeName=23MM_GSH623 FullName=23mm GSh-6-23 Cannon Caliber=23.000000 <--- =23mm. Why does it work absolutely perfectly for me??? What do I know that you all don't???? My brothers, I don't know what to tell you... What I"ll do, is I'll zipup my entire aircraft folder, upload to my site, and post the link. I'm at an absolute loss.... I haven't a single problem with it in SF/WoV/WoE. I'm guessing... ControlPanel/Install-Uninstall Programs??? unless it comes with a built-in uninstaller. Check you Programs listing. Like I said, I don't have it, so can't be of any help there. Seeing that a lot of folks are having 'issues' with their Foxhound, perhaps Veltro will finish his off. I really, really REEAALLY hope he does. To at least give an alternative model. Wrench kevin stein -

Glitches... OV-10A, F-9F, and AC-130
Wrench replied to ShinKazama88's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I've edited your post, to reduce the font size. As mentioned above, that's shouting, and considered rude. As to some of the glitches... From the tone, I'm assuming you've NOT spent any time at all in the Knowledge Base, which will provide the answers you seek on WHY your add-on terrains have on 'terrain objects' - like, fer instance, runways. What's happening is the game engine is NOT seeing the approiate 'cat file', that stores the needed object. Hop on over the KB, your answer is there. Look for the post on "3rd Party Terrains" in (i think) the Intermediate Modding Section. Most, if not all, add-ons -especially terrains- should come with an odd little file called a "readme". Which is exactly what you should do with. They contain instructions for installing and using that mod. I'd suggest actually reading them. Looking at the Bronco, you're loadout is acting funny as it's trying to carry the ER-142/ALR-53 ECM suite, designed for the EF-4C Phantom, Wild Weasel 3. That's because the ER-142 is set as a gunpod. Easiest fix, is to delete the ER-142 from your WeaponsPak. The correct fix, is to change its 'type'. Using the data below, copy/paste DIRECTLY OVER THE EXISTING WEAPON'S ENTRY Do the 'adding weapons dance", full instructions on THAT are also to be found in the KB, and that'll fix that. Unfortunately, for the EF-4C, this unit never quite fit properly. But that's for another time; suffice it to say, the EF-4C has been fixed 'by other means" As to the others, do some research on basic flight; one rule is throttle up, and let the aircraft 'fly iteself' off the runway. As to the Panther, DO you have a key mapped to the tailhook?? It should automatically be "H". You might want to spend some time reading the game manual, it's a PDF in a folded called "Manual". It probably won't cover everything, but it'l get you started. BTW, Welcome to Combat Ace Wrench Kevin Stein Keeper of the Knowledge Base -

It's at Capun's site. Be advised, there's some 'aim aingle' glitches, and it tends to shoot itself in the foot. I mentioned it to Capun, but neither one of us got around to fixing it. Wrench kevin stein
