Operation Desert Storm, Patch 1
JSF_Aggie replied to JSF_Aggie's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - File Announcements
Navy81, Do you mean additional carriers, or you're not seeing any at all? I'll have to look at it when I get home, but I don't think we left out any carrier that was there during the majority of the conflict. There are a few Navy squadrons that were left out, because we lacked the skins, but if you fly Navy in the campaign, you'll definately fly off a carrier. -

SF2 Europe Harrier Highway Strips
JSF_Aggie replied to Helmut_AUT's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
For the highway airfields, I have the bare minimum of files tar'ed up on my desktop from NF4. Let me make sure TK hasn't tweaked the _targets.ini & _types.ini files with the last two patches, and I'll upload them tonight to the SF2 area. I also have the hi-res runway tiles modified to run with SF2 series runway .lod's, including the RED airfields. I just haven't had a chance to upload them yet. I'll try and get them uploaded tonight as well. Youth bball has started again, and I got "drafted" to coach my daughter's 6th grade team as well. Ohh the horror..... -

Modders: What Do You Concentrate On?
JSF_Aggie replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I prefer to work on campaigns. I'll skin and make humble attempts at other stuff, if I need something for a campaign. IMHO, you get the most out of this game with campaigns. However, they wouldn't be possible without all the other great work that's been done in skinning, aircraft, terrain, effects, etc. With a well done campaign, you get to see the best of the community on every mission. -

Desert Storm Patch Uploaded

Argh, it's not a bug. It's that way for a reason. Read the README.pdf for the explanation. -
I was just reading this story on another site. Much respect. RIP.

I put "Tweaked A-10A and OA-10A flight model" in the patch's README .txt, but I left Gerwin's name out of the big README's credit section by mistake. Sorry man, I'll add you in. The OA-10 still had the FM from the previous patch, so it got updated to the current patch's FM. Both the OA-10 & and the A-10 got Gerwin's tweak that improves pitch/turning performance. -
"The panorama inside the helmet effectively makes the F-35 completely invisible to the pilot." That's not completely true. The DAS image is "blanked" where ever the MFD's are, so the pilot can still see them when the DAS video is up. There's a HOTAS switch to toggle the HMD's DAS video on/off if the pilot needs to see anything else in the cockpit. I've worn the real helmet with the real HMD software running, and DAS video provided by their DAS simulator. It was very impressive. They have the real DAS system flying on a lear jear now. The three current F-35's don't have the DAS cameras installed.

Guys, for the F-15E graphical issues, grab these .TGA's and put them in your F-15E directory. My bad. F_15E_TGAs.rar -

I have not seen it. We didn't do anything to intentionally change the requirements for receiving medals. I'm not sure what the game looks at for giving out medals. My guess would the sum of points for the targets destroyed, as defined in the terrain's _types.ini. If it keeps repeating, post some of your mission results, i.e. how many targets were destroyed and what type, etc. -
Happy Birthday guys.

AV-8B Help
JSF_Aggie replied to MaverickMike's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Yes it is possible to land vertically, with zero knots airspeed, but it takes some practice. You wouldn't want to do this with a heavy aircraft. If it's at the end of the mission, you are probably low on fuel, and have expended your ordinance, and therefore light enough to do this. Also, it's much easier if you do not have an asymetric loadout as you come home. However, I usually land at around 70-80 knots coming back to the expeditionary airfields. Slow down normally to around 200 knots. When you get below that, full flaps, spd brk out, and move your nozzles all the way forward with about 50% throttle to slow you down to 70-80 knots. Once you get down to that speed, put your nozzles at 45 deg for the rest of the approach. At that speed, I use throttle and nozzle position to control altitude and decent rate, not for/aft stick. One downside is that the game engine doesn't have the AI use thrust vectoring, so be carefull your wingman do not run up the back of you on approach, especially when you get to the point of doing a vertical landing. -
