US Navy helicopter crash off VA Coast
Viggen replied to MAKO69's topic in Military and General Aviation

It's been hovering at or below freezing here in Afghanistan too. At least on nights, which is when I work. Sucks when the Chinook's heater doesn't want to work!

Falklands Map
Viggen replied to pieisgood's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Think the map has a year limit of 1982 and 1983 as well. -
Merry Christmas everyone!

Six US soldiers were killed in a helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan

The crew and aircraft involved are part of my Brigade. RIP -
I know who Reuben James is. It was a line in the book, is all.
-
Like the bit in Red Storm Rising. "What the devil is a Reuben James?" "At least we don't name ships after our mother in law!" The majority of warships that have served in the US Navy have names with meaning. Whether it's after a location, battle, or naval hero. Some, I do agree are questionable, but I'm a Soldier so what do I know?

Stary's Ejecting/Parachuting pilot mod for SF2?
Viggen replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Noticed ejecting pilots in SF2NA after I installed eburger's expansion for it. Works for me! -
forgive brothers for i have sinned!

Nah, that's not sinning. Now a Polish Thunderbolt? Yeah, ask Dave or Spinners about that. -
Why did the germans used orange paintings on aircrafts?

While on the subject of day-glow panels, why do the Egyptians use them on their fighters? To identify them from Israeli aircraft? -
Iran-Iraq war
Viggen replied to Centurion-1's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
So are the Egyptian Mirages that flew for Iraq for six weeks in 1986 going to be featured? Or the MiGs the Russians tested in combat during the war? -
Ok, in my never ending series of questions about Naval Aviation, I've got two more today (tonight in 'Merica). What block of F-14 is featured in SF2NA? The long range camera system used in Red Storm Rising to track the Backfires and tankers, was that the TCS or a work of fiction?
-
The beaver tail was what I was looking for too, and I didn't think to look for the other exterior differences in the blocks. RSR never mentions the F-14's engines. I think they were specified as F-14As at one point in the book anyway.

Harriers blowing up on take off
Viggen posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Finally managed to get around to trying the SF2NA expansion. Flying Harriers off the Saipan in '86. But, my wingies keep smacking the deck with their tails on take off and crash into the water maybe 200 feet infront of the ship. I could have sworn there was a solution someone posted to that issue (in general, not with the expansion) but I'm having a brain fart this morning. Anyone care to help? -

Alright, I'll test that tomorrow. Going to try it as it again first. -
Harriers blowing up on take off
Viggen replied to Viggen's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
They get their gear off the deck, pull up and then tail strike and stall into the water. AV-8A. Didn't check their nozzle position because I was under the impression the AI didn't use them. I've got the AI on normal and am trying a STOL due to my ordinance- which I didn't take into consideration. I may have had the aircraft too heavy? -

That's already a part of the expansion. -
Carrier Landings: Rites of Passage
Viggen replied to Fubar512's topic in Military and General Aviation
Great series. Found it awesome that it covers a whole cruise and from multiple perspectives. But my opinion of pitching deck remains the same: "NO! No. No. No. No. Fuck that. Thank god that isn't featured in SF2NA!" ...And yet I still find naval aviation so interesting. -
Wings over Africa Phase I

Awesome idea! I've had a similar campaign using the SF2 Desert on my hard drive for a while. This one looks even better though. -

Cocas you just ended up making a bird that's going to be a part of a story I'm writing. Nice job. I look forward to its release and battles against F-20s.
