  1. SAM FX

  2. It's Polak's replacement terrain tiles for SF's desert terrain, and Gepard's Israel theatre.
  3. I'll pen up a knowledge base article on how to set up and locate NATO SAM defenses on the WOE Germany CE and SF Desert terrains when I manage to get a bit free time. I have a lot on my plate at present, and I'm just catching up. Wrench, just for the helluvit, try setting the ground object roles of the Nike and its radars as "Nike_Battery", and see if they still appear (and work). Update: Just tried it, and it works fine, Kevin! 4. An interesting story: I recently flew a sweep mission in WoE's F-15A (to which I've added SF's desert terrain w/Polak's tile set, just for grins and giggles), and encountered a flight of new & improved MiG-29As*. To make a long story short, after an almost 20 minute engagement, I was the only member of my flight left, and found myself out of missiles with two MiGs to deal with. I eventually gunned one down, and went after the other, realizing only after I had it in my sights that I was out of ammo, and counter measures! I disengaged, dove for the deck, and flew the 100 or so miles back to friendly airspace at 600+ knots and below 100 feet AGL. with an angry Fulcrum chasing me. He fired off all his Aphids and Alamos at me, but the combination of my speed and ludicrously low altitude helped spoof them. But he still had his gun. Eventually, I reached the border, where'd I'd located a string of Hawk batteries I owe the crew of "Hawk Battery Charlie" a round of drinks. * PS: I'm not at liberty to discuss the "new & improved" MiG-29A. 5. Wrench, have them launch vertically, and set the yaw for the individual missiles to different azimuth settings to prevent the site from vollying them.
  6. Very nice, looks like a Nike HIPAR: http://ed-thelen.org/t_r_hipar.html
  7. Since I generally set up SAM sites with layered defenses, that may not be a viable alternative. Everything from mobile SA-8s/9s/Tunguska's and ZSU-23/4s are waiting for someone to ingress at low-level

A "what if" texture, depicting a YAK-141M in Soviet Northern Fleet service.
  10. Polak, you've hit another home run with this terrain. I cannot begin to telll you how much it adds to the immersiveness when flying at low level.

  15. Su-27 Maneuvers

  16. Well, according to HrnFixr (henceforth to be referred to as "SuBrkr"), if you hit the "D" button at any speed in SF/FF/WoV/WoE/FE, you'll hear a warning tone that sounds like "Durdurdur", and whichever aerial conveyance you may be in, will perform a maneuver called the "Hissing Viper". Immediately upon hearing this, I fired up Google, looked up "Hissing Viper", and read the following: Habitat and Habits: A snake of open, sandy woodlands - found in the wooded dunes of western Michigan. The upturned snout is used to burrow after toads, a favorite food. When threatened, hognose snakes puff up with air, flatten their necks and bodies, and hiss loudly. (This has led to local names like "puff adder" or "hissing viper.") If this act is unsuccessful, they will writhe about, excrete a foul smelling musk, and then turn over with mouth agape and lie still, as though dead. Despite this intimidating behavior, Hog-nosed snakes are harmless to humans. Now, knowing that USAFMTL is a native of Michigan (and that the aforementioned Hrntfxr is always setting him up), I smelled a rat....or was it just the airframe excreting a foul smelling musk as it rolled over, intake agape, and lay still?
  17. F-22

The YF-23 was not designed for thrust vectoring. It was actually as maneuverable as the F-22 above 400 knots, and was stealthier in both the microwave and infrared wavelengths, as it did not have to house the thrust vectoring nozzles. It also boasted a higher top speed. As to what would have eventually happened to the design, had it been chosen for production, who can say? I do know that the Northrop team initially looked into TVC, and decided against it.
  18. Nele, Did you factor in the engine altitude tables? Most of the models out there (both default and third-party) are using tables with values plotted every 3048 meters. That's every 10,000 feet! Here's an example. This is from Thirdwire's F-4B AltitudeTableNumData=8 AltitudeTableDeltaX=3048.0 AltitudeTableStartX=0.0 AltitudeTableData=1.000,0.690,0.463,0.300,0.182,0.123,0.054,0.000 This is from Streakeagle's F-4B AltitudeTableNumData=91 AltitudeTableDeltaX=304.8 AltitudeTableStartX=0.0 AltitudeTableData=1,0.971106394,0.942855852,0.915238387,0.888244103,0.861863187,0.836085916,0.81090265,0.786303837,0.762280013,0.738821797,0.715919894,0.693565098,0.671748283,0.650460414,0.629692538,0 .609435786,0.589681377,0.570420613,0.55164488,0.533345649,0.515514475,0.498142997,0.481222939,0.464746105,0.448704388,0.433089758,0.417894274,0.403110075,0.388729381,0.374744499,0.361147815,0.34793179 9 ,0.335089002,0.322612056,0.310493678,0.298726662,0.285193242,0.27240596,0.26022405,0.248620308,0.237562406,0.226989891,0.216908987,0.207331873,0.198193216,0.18941235,0.181041534,0.173024394,0.16538841 7 ,0.157978038,0.150909904,0.143808453,0.137043248,0.131316926,0.125837043,0.120517912,0.115176317,0.110071472,0.105192884,0.100530525,0.096074811,0.091816584,0.087747089,0.083857963,0.08014121,0.076589 1 91,0.073194605,0.069950474,0.066850129,0.063887197,0.061055589,0.058349483,0.055763318,0.053291776,0.050929778,0.048672468,0.046515207,0.04445356,0.042483289,0.040600345,0.038800856,0.037081125,0.0354 3 7615,0.033866949,0.032365898,0.030931377,0.029560436,0.028250259,0.026998151,0.025801539
