Certain target areas not appearing in strike mission
warthog64 replied to warthog64's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Well no luck, thanks anyways though I guess I forgot to mention that It's only the VietnamSEA terrain that has this issue. The Korea3 and IR2003 terrains for example work fine and allow you to strike artillery sites. -

Thanks guys, I'll delete the SAM targets and see if that fixes it. -
How to add targets?
warthog64 posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I am trying to add new targets to the Korea3 terrain in order to make it a little more modern. I tried adding a few silkworm missile sites and did all the required (or at least what I thought) steps to do so. I added the sites from the IR2003 terrain's Targets.ini and then added the proper Types.ini and ground objects as well. I then did all the required mods in the korea3_targets.ini such as positioning and target area numbers. It all appeared to work and the sites and targets all appeared on the games mission menu, yet when I tried to fly a strike mission against one of the sites none of the ground objects appear. The ammo bunkers and GSR etc. appear but the EW Radar and none of the missile launchers etc. appear. They appear as selectable targets before a mission but are not physically there once I start the mission. Any idea what could be going wrong? Thanks -
Are Gunners too deadly?

An Il-28 is easy meat though, they're slow and low flying and the rear gunners are easy to avoid. -
Are Gunners too deadly?

I'd also say no, I think it's pretty accurate and fair. Gunners of WWII bombers like the B-17 are very lethal. I was shot down many times in a FW-190 when attacking B-17s in my early days of playing SF1. When you have guns shooting every direction and 13 or more of them from each bomber you need lots of help from other aircraft as well as experience and training to survive. It was rare for a single fighter pilot in WWII to claim more than 2 or 3 bombers at a time. So the game is pretty accurate when comparing it to the real thing. In WWII it took swarms of fighters to bring down large numbers of bombers and several enemy fighters were always lost in the process to gunners. It was a numerical advantage in those times that enabled fighters to defeat bombers in large numbers. Even Egon Meyer only shot down two B-17s at the most each time and three on only one occasion. WWII gunners and guns were incredibly lethal! However when attacking a Tu-16, Tu-95, or B-52 I've always attacked from the front or side to avoid the rear gunners and only face the one or two side and top turret gunners in a Tu-16/95. I usually prevail using this tactic as I'm only facing one or two guns. Also catching a B-52 in a Mig-21 is tough to do because you must climb and drain all your airspeed to even get within missile range. Catching a Tu-16 or Tu-95 in an F-4 or Mirage III is not that difficult, but you can use missiles instead of guns first. Catching a Tu-16 in a Super Mystere is tricky though, and of course you don't have missiles to use. As mentioned by macelena, the Mig-21 was not successful in catching and shooting down B-52's in Vietnam. Even when they got within range, they were always trailing the bombers due to losing their speed in the climb and therefore were vulnerable to B-52 gunners. They learned to avoid this soon after losing two 21's to gunners of course, and all B-52's were lost to SAM's. But I still prefer to attack a Badger or Bear with a missile from an F-4 or Mirage III to avoid gunners. ECM and Chaff/Flares are the only issue there. -
If anyone hasn't picked up the A-10 Osprey title yet I 100% recommend it!

Just got it today, so far so good!

Of course, I was just referring to fighters though. Those A-10 kills were pretty interesting engagements though, Equally interesting is the one F-15E kill using an LGB! In addition to fighters and A-10's there was an EF-111 that scored a maneuvering kill, and some sources claim an AH-64 scored a kill against another helo although I don't have any real info or knowledge of that story.

I believe some F-16's did fly air to air missions alogside F-15's, but none achieved any aerial kills as mentioned and they only carried AIM-9's compared to the F-15's AIM-7's. The F-16 received the AIM-120 radar guided missile in 1992 and two F-16 pilots shot down Iraqi Migs in '92 and '93 however. The F-15 really had a monopoly over all other fighters, with the F-14 getting only 1 kill, the F-18 only 2, and F-16's none. However don't forget the F-16 flew more sorties than any other aircraft in ODS, and that alone is an outstanding achievement for the Falcon!

And still one of the best in the world!

Korean Air War mod issue
warthog64 posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I just installed the Korean War campaign by Do335 but can't get it to work. Every time I choose campaign on the main menu screen the game just freezes and then eventually crashes. I've tried three fresh installs now and the same problem persists. Any ideas? -

Article and very scary picture of a fatal crash today. That airport is a very dangerous one especially in winter weather, it said tailwinds were 30 knots! My thoughts go out to the family of the deceased. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/01/05/aspen-plane-crash/4329739/

Is there a British Challenger and Soviet T-90 available for SF2?
-
In the IR2003 terrain for operation darius the IR_water.bmp works fine, it allows naval fleets to be created and saved in a single mission using the mission editor. However when attempting this using the Korea3 terrain in a Modern Warfare Korea install, every time I try to re-fly a saved mission the fleets that were previously created are always erased and I have to create a totally new mission due to the absence of a target for the player aircraft. I have NavalMap=True in the Korea3.ini and I'm using the the Korea3_water.bmp with the "green naval" areas, yet I'm still having a problem. Yes I'm using SF2NA as the base install for both games. Any ideas? Thanks

Discovery networks doesn't have most of those classic shows available on DVD for some strange reason. I'm thinking clash of wings is no exception.

Are the French Damocles targeting pod, and Areos recon pod available anywhere? I thought I saw a screenshot with a Damocles pod once so I assume it exists as a file but I can't seem to find it. Thanks

French Pods

Thanks a lot! -
I would say a more realistic comparison would be that an F-35 with external combat loads and therefore not that stealthy is equal to the F-16 with no real advantages. Regardless, the flight performance of an F-35 is much better than an F-105 or F-4, that comparison is nuts! The F-35 is more maneuverable, has faster acceleration, has a tighter turning radius, etc. The F-22 is a much better pure fighter than an F-35 though of course. That website seems to have a lot of asinine articles about the capabilities of modern U.S. aircraft. It even claims the 30 year old Su-27 is still the best fighter in the world, so I wouldn't give them much credibility.

Proximity Fuses?
warthog64 posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Is there a way to get air to air missiles to detonate when they are near a target? For example if a missile is decoyed is there a way to detonate a missile just as it passes near the aircraft? Thanks -
Sounds pack : explosions, aircraft engines, missiles, guns
