Those are some good points weasel keeper. The reason I would like to see the aircraft retained in is the fact that all of the next generation of stealty fighters are so utterly cost prohibitive that I forsee a much smaller fleet of combat aircraft . Think of the cost of loosing an F-22 or an F-35 compared to say losing an F-16 or an F-117 that was paid in full 2 decades ago. For certain missions it is a good idea to retain older but still very capable aircraft.

Fuel Tank Woes (not WOEs)
Icarus999 replied to gbnavy61's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Sorry if this comes across as a stupid question but which phantom are you trying to load the sparows on? It sounded to me like you just wanted the tactical grey tanks for the F-4S and somthing in the tank data messed up your ability to load sparows on the S....or are you trying to add sparrows to the RF-4C. The RF-4C version never used sparrows, but it did carry sidewinders in the gulf war...as a bluff. -
It's more than depressing .... its just wrong. Those aircraft should be fitted with new avionics, structually reinforced and retained in service. With the cost of new aircraft to replace the F-15 F-16 the idea of scrapping the F-117 does not make sense to me. The stealthy F-117 would make one hell of a "Killer" as part of a wild weasel team, much better than an F-16; why not utilize what we have rather than send it to the scrapyard.

New Korean Terrain?
Icarus999 replied to Panther's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
If you are still looking for input, modern Korea would be my vote; because a modern version has never been made available. -
Unfortunately for every man of honor their are 50 without. Is it just me or does anyone else here think that it sucks that the modders.... the very same people who create all these awesome additions to the game that improve our playing experience 100 fold are having to foot the bill while 1000's of honor less turds are taking up bandwith hording free mods. When I hear people on other sim sites whining about combatace becoming "payware" and I have to laugh, these idiots seem to lack the common sense to understand that running a website like this one is an expensive proposition. Do those Tools who refuse to pony up actually think the modders who spend hundreds of hours learning their craft and developing these mods should then have to pay to put their creations in the hands of the unappreciative? Perhaps rather than just tightening the belt it is time to tighten up security at the door. As it is in every other aspect of society there are some who lack the resources to contribute monetarily, and that is fine, perhaps there is another way they can contribute; maybe they could moderate or provide a tech support and take some of the burden off others. Actually that might be a good idea - a Tech support area where knowledgeable members who might be financially challenged can contribute to the site.

A2G Weapons & the AI
Icarus999 replied to a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mission/Campaign Building Discussion
Hey bro, I had noticed your previous posts last winter about the AI's refusal to drop smart weapons and I as well have had the same problem. I am not challenging anything you are saying about the AI and since i do not play campaign mode I do not know how the targeting works in campaigns. What I am trying to accomplish is to put our heads together and compare notes to make this work with what we have. What I have found is that if I insert ground objects as a targets such as bunkers or buildings and select CAS or Armed recon the AI flights (read not a/c from my flight) will destroy them with smart bombs missiles. not only will the AI flights kill the target that I sent them after but the will often kill any target of oppertunity (other ground objects I placed on the map or sams / AAA that target them. For my use designing single missions it makes no difference to me whether the mission is called Strike or CAS because I have the ability to assign the AI flights any loadout I want for any mission. I can select a strikeloadout for a CAS mission or an anti ship loadout for a Armed recon mission. Also just for the sake of clarity the bunker i used was not labled as a tank: MissionData NationName=NVietnam ServiceStartYear=1940 ServiceEndYear=1975 GroundObjectRole=MISC Availability=COMMON Exported=FALSE ExportStartYear= ExportAvailability= Now what I am doing may only work for single missions... you campain players will have to let me know -

Quote "How would you guys feel like a gunship version? a next generation flying fortress, with howitzers and autocannon like the Spooky" Now thats a killer idea, and on top of that it could still retain the capability to drop bombs and launch missiles the freaking thing is huge and has 2 bomb bays right?. We need a better gunsight/targeting simulation for the AC-130 I have the Yap version and while it is cool it leaves a lot to be desired. what we need is something like the AC-130 targeting system they built for Call of duty 4, that mission totally rocked We also need to find a way to get gunships to work correctly with the AI. I have seen my yap AC-130E actually hit things when being flown by AI... i do not know if it was a fluke but it happened multiple times in a mission- a ground object would open up on the AC-130 and the spectre would hose the object with 20mm and 7.62 as it flew by. But if i assign the AC-130 a target it will normally dive "nose on" the target while firing wildly at a 90 degree angle off target. -

You can send me a pint of porter or stout. I had some problems with this bomb- loaded it on the B-58 and the F-111, some times I could not drop the damn things ... the AI had the same problem. however some times it did drop fine. beter plan on dropping this one from high altitude and running like hell. A2G Weapons & the AI
Icarus999 replied to a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mission/Campaign Building Discussion
I am not sure how campaigns operate as far as target insertion, do you have the option of placing ground objects seperatly from terrain targets as one can do when creating a mission with a mission editor? Based on my reserch I believe it is likely that the problem that Canadair is having with JADAM's and other guided bombs/ Missiles is that he is selecting a "terrain target" to hit with the weapon rather than inserting a hard target such as a bunker or a building as a ground object. In my tests against 4 bunkers with jadams- a 2 ship flight hit the bunkers taking out 2 on the first pass then dropped tanks and #1 fired 2 HARMs at two seperate targets while #2 finished off the last 2 bunkers. Then I tried it again: they dropped JADAMs hit two bunkers dropped tanks and this time # 2 took took out a sam/radar with a HARM while #1 hit the 3rd bunker, then #2 came back in and made 3 passes/turns in the canyon trying to get a firing solution on the last bunker. #2 destroyed the last bunker but was unable pull up enough to clear the canyon and crashed into the side of the mountain... he almost made it. This was a CAS mission with a Strike payload using the Superbug. -

So the problem you are having with AI and guided weapons is happening when you select Strike or anti ship as the mission for the AI flight? Are the targets in question "terrain" targets or targets that you inserted into the map with a mission editor? I have had big problems like you describe in the past, however my newer missions are much improved. I will try the JDAM and see if i can get it working in my game. -

Icarus999 replied to a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mission/Campaign Building Discussion
Yes adding a designator to the planes flown by AI does work, but there still are some strange variables in play, many times the AI will ripple them as if they were dumb bombs, it also seems to depend on what else is going on in the mission, i have found that if you set up a mission that is pure air to ground with no enemy aircraft present that the AI aircraft behave much smarter and hit their targets for the most part. You can place enemy aircraft far away from your strike so that they are no threat, then place friendly fighters to intercept them. The more aircraft you add in the air to air fight the more stupid the AI strike force will become, adding BVR mods makes the game work even harder with the air to air to the point that certain flights will just fly around and forget their mission. anti ship missions seem to be especially prone to this retardation factor, sometimes you can fix this with le missoneur by calling the mission Armed Recon or CAS instead of anti ship, then you select the anti ship load out with le missioneur. Also your position in the game ( what flight you are in and where that flight is positioned) seems to make a big difference in the overall AI behavior - sam activity, AAA, and how your SEAD flights behave. I can set up a huge mission and get totally different AI behavior depending on which aircraft within it I choose to fly. And if I get killed, that flight that was acting retarded flying around in circles often starts targeting ground objects. -

That is not good at all, we need to find a way to fix it; as this pretty much nullifies our BVR capabilities. -

Wow this is a heated thread, lots of strong opinions. Mine???? The F-14D was the best ACM aircraft that ever flew until the debut of the F-22 . If it is true that the bugs were finally worked out of the AWG-9 and the late model Aim 54C and that the f-14D could indeed track 24 aircraft and simultaneously fire on 6 targets, then the f-22 is a step backwards as an interceptor. However in reality the stealth capability of the Raptor means that the tomcat much like the eagle would never know the f-22 was there until it was dead. Combine stealth with thrust vectoring and fire and forget BVR on an aircraft thats a fantastic dogfighter to begin with and you rule the sky. The F-14D was a brute.... a huge and powerful interceptor that thanks to its new engines could turn with the best of them. If anything the f-14D was overpowered to the point of being scary. The idea of it being replaced by the super bug is a joke to me( it's a feeling much like having your wife tell you that from now on Gary Coleman will be taking over your bedroom duties) and speaks poorly to the funding/ desision making ability of our government. the D is was what the F-14 should have been from the start. Now back to the f-14 vs f-15 question My dad flew The F-4J, F-4N, F-4S and the F-14A as well as the A-4SE/SF And the F-5E. According to dad F-14A vs f-15A ACM was a "roll of the dice" with neither aircraft proving itself to be clearly superior- the f-15A had better acceleration and sometimes that worked to their advantage, the f-14A had a huge BVR/ Radar advantage and on occasion when they were allowed to use it they dominated eagles who lacked Awacs support. Two sets of eyes in the cockpit/ splitting the work load were another tomcat advantage. It was the training of the aircrew that was the most important factor not the aircraft. Pilots who flew F-14A and F-15A often got their asses handed to them by fleet and reserve squadrons flying the F-4N and F-4S phantoms in DACM. One reserve unit flying the old F-4N with the outdated engines that left dark smoke trails and lacking the leading edge slats of the S model, beat out all other navy fighter squadrons in DACM kills. They took on everything the USN/ USAF and USMC could throw at them and emerged victorious flying jets that were 20 years old, thoroughly embarrassing all of the active units navy units( especially the tomcat guys) . They were a bunch of old guys who knew their aircrafts strengths and weaknesses, who years before had to eat their pride and learn from experience as better pilots in A-4's or F-5's ate them alive. This does not mean that the F-4/ A-4/ or F-5 are better fighters than the F-14/ F-15..... all that it means is that neither the f-14A or f-15A are the invincible super fighters that so many people fantasize them to be. Now the f-14D... well thats a super fighter!!! .... but even it can lose a dogfight.

Messiah Marcolin- Candlemass- album: Nightfall. Mind blowing operatic technique on this album.... on the other albums they did he toned it down. Geoff Tate- Queensryche self titled EP ( Queen of the ryche) again the first album has better vocal dynamics and rocks much harder than the later releases. Jim Gillette- Nitro . Some of his bands had a bit of a butt rock influence.... but Gillette was/ is a true master class, opera trained vocalist with a six octave range. Jamie Vendara - world class vocal coach / studied under Jim gillette / guest on discovery channels myth busters ( shatters wine glasses with no amplification ) Bruce Dickenson - Iron Maiden Ripper Owens - iced earth /judas priest/yngwie malmsteen Warrel Dane- Nevermore

So what do you fly?
Icarus999 replied to serverandenforcer's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
sounds like we like the same planes... my favorite jet from the 80's was the F-4S Phantom I do a lot of flying in it as well as a what if version of it with a modern HUD / Avionics/weapons. I also love the F-14A/D and F-18A. I really dig the new mirage factory A-7E and have kicked a lot of virtual butt in it. Been flying heavily edited version of Capuns Whale/ A-3D with a new cockpit.. very nice. The RF-8G from YAP kicks A**!!! A very cool person from this site hooked me up with a low vis skin for it. My first mission with it was insane I had to recon an airbase, half way in I picked up Migs from There on the whole mission was tree top level balls out, every thing that could shoot at me was shooting at me and red crown keeps calling out new bogies : I'm being chased by Mig 29's into an ambush of SU-27s located twenty miles beyond my objective and headed my way, when here come a flight of Mig 21's and another of Mig 23's rolling in on my target the whole area lights up with sam activity and I realize that some friendly F-15s and F-4F ICE are working the Migs. just as I was making my photo pass we got jumped by a couple of flankers and the flight of fishbeds. I got my photos and we ran like hell... over 700kts right on the deck. the SU -27s threw everything they had at us but the mig 21s were having trouble keeping up(not for a lack of trying) right about that time my wing man got hit, not bad but enough to slow him down. Just as I was fearing the worst those F-4F ICE birds show up again and blow both Su-27s out of the sky. We continued to dodge AAA and Sams for most of the ride home. I toggled to map mode to check the position of the Mig 21's and they had fallen so far behind that they were no longer an serious threat soon they gave up on us and headed for home. we made it home on fumes. This was one of the greatest missions I have ever flown on any sim and I never even fired a shot!!! Talk about exhilaration. The Yap RF-8G rules!!!! So does their RF-4B Also love the F-4N /F-8E/J and the A-4SE could I forget them!! When I fly Air force birds I like The F-15E the F-22/ F-106/ F-16ADF/ F-4G/ F-4E/ F-4E+super phantom/ F-16C/ F-15A/C / A-10/ and lets not forget the awesome F-111F or the FB-111 -

Icarus999 replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I am not sure if his plans have changed but originally his team had planned to realease their mods on their own site that specialized in canadian aircraft/ objects for strike fighters. according to blackfly both Pilot and Rio pits are under construction, we will be able to toggle back and forth between them. on another note Veltro2k has something like eight awesome models and needs uv mappers/ skinners, can any one find the time to give him a hand? -
