McDonnell F-110B Phantom - Tactical Air Command, 1963 The resounding success of the F-4B in the competitive fly-off against the F-106 during ‘Operation Highspeed’ led to a more comprehensive evaluation of two loaned Navy F-4B’s (designated as the F-110A) but McDonnell had already been planning a purpose-built tactical fighter version of the F-4 for the USAF with manual terrain-following radar and TF30 turbofan engines. Designated F-110B this aircraft promised to be an excellent partner to the F-111A (TFX) and quickly gained the support of Defense Secretary Robert McNamara who authorised production of the type in February 1962. The pre-production prototype first flew in November 1963 and the F-110B entered service during the following year.

This little update simply introduces a regular squadron (F13) and adds a screenshot. It goes without saying that you must have the stock Third Wire Lightning F.3 in your install meaning that you must have Expansion Pack 2 for Strike Fighters 2 Europe. INSTRUCTIONS 1. From the AIRCRAFT folder drag and drop the LightningF3S folder into your Aircraft folder. 2. From the DECALS folder drag and drop the LightningF3S folder into your main Decals folder. 3. From the PILOTS folder drag and drop the PILOT_ACRO folder into you main Pilots folder. 4. From the WEAPONS folder drag and drop the Rb22 & Rb25 folders into your main Weapons folder. I've enjoyed reading about this aircraft here are a few highlights; Designed to a challenging 1945 specification for radar-guided interception at night or in bad weather with a speed over 500mph and at 40,000ft and 125 miles from it's home carrier. Despite it's uninspiring bulk it was lighter and smaller than the Air Force's contemporary F-89 Scorpion and was seriously studied as an alternative. With four drop tanks it had a sortie time of seven hours! On Nov 3rd, 1952 and F3D-2 of VMF(N)-513 won the first ever night jet v. jet combat downing a Yak-15 over Korea.
