Why always english abbreviation for naming an Air Force. Call it Heyl Ha'Avir and it is clear. Its the same with Luftwaffe, nobody says GAF. Or on the other side of the iron curtain LSK and not EGAF. -
MiG-21K carrierborn fighter family

File Name: MiG-21K carrierborn fighter family File Submitter: Gepard File Submitted: 30 August 2014 File Category: What If Hangar MiG-21K, KS, KST and Kbis Soviet Navy carrierborne fighters (What if) v1.0 ************************************************************* This mod is made for SF2NA. ---------------------------------------------------------- I. History In 1946 the UK had a lot of major problems. It suffered high losses during WW2 and war damages all over the country were significant. The industry layed down and a big amount of war depts pressed the economy further. On the other hand the Royal Navy had a lot of ships which were not neccessary anymore. So it was decided to sell some major ships, including aircraft carriers. The HMS Colossus was sold to France, the HMS Warrior went to Canada. The Netherlands wanted to buy the HMS Venerable and Australia was interessted in the HMS Venegance. 1946 the Soviet Union showed their wish to buy 3 carriers of the Colossus class and offered a price of 50tons of fine gold. So the last 3 carriers of the Colossus class, the Theseus, Triumph and Perseus were handed over to the Soviet Sea War Fleet and were named as TAKR Odessa, TAKR Kronstadt and TAKR Sewastopol. Odessa and Kronstadt were operated by the Northern Fleet, while the Sewastopol served in the Baltic fleet for 6 years. In 1952 all carriers were sent back to Navy wharfs to refit them with an angle deck. The blueprints of this innovative design was stolen by the Cambridge Five espionage group. In 1955 the Odessa became operational again. The Kronstadt followed one year later and the Sewastopol reentered the service in 1957. All 3 carriers were used till mid/end 70th. After refit with angle deck the MiG-17 became the core of the Odessa flight group. But in 1961, the Soviet Navy demanded a supersonic interceptor with Mach 2 capabilities. The OKB MiG decided to modify their newest plane, the MiG-21PF, to fit the requirements of carrier operations. The MiG-21K was born. The K got a strenghtend landing gear, an arrestor hook and carriertypical avionics. The most obviesly difference was the introduction of canards and an inflight refuel probe. So it was possible to increase the former much to short range of the plane. The K got the new engine R-13-300 which was originally intended for the next MiG-21 generation. After nearly one decade of carrier operations a new updated version was needed. It came in 1968 and got the designation MiG-21KS. The KS got the RP-22 radar which increased the detection range by 50% and made new weapons possible. So the R-60 and R-3R were introduced and the air to ground missile Kh-23. The number of weapon stations was doubled. Now were 4 wingpylons available. The new stronger R-13F2-300 engine gave the KS a better handling. As nuclear strike plane the MiG-21KST was developed. KST stands for korableniy, safir, toplivo what means carrierborn, saphire radar RP-22, additionally fuel. It got the big back tank of the MiG-21SMT and was prepared to carry nuclear bombs under the wings. It entered the service in 1973. 1975 the last version MiG-21Kbis came to the squadrons. The external shape was similar to the precessor MiG-21KS, but under the skin the Kbis was a new plane. The structure was mainly build by titanium what made the plane light and strong. The new R-25-300K engine gave more thrust and less fuel consumtion. The RP-22KM radarsystem was able to operate the new medium range air to air missiles of the R-23 and R-24 family over a distance up to 40km. All MiG-21K versions had had no internal gun, but where ably to carry the GP-9 gunpod under the central fuselage station. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- II. Leading edge flaps (slats) would have helped a lot to reduce the landing speed, but the MiG-OKB had had problems with slats in one early prototype and so they were removed. Blown trailing edge flaps were used from MiG-21PFS and reduced the landig speed to 210 km/h with leading edge flaps it could be below 200 km/h and so make carrier operations possible. Ironically i played with slats and blown flaps in the FM and the plane handled much better, but the AI was unable to land the plane correctly on the carrier. So i have removed this features again. With 260 - 270 km/h landing speed the AI brings the plane more or less correct on the deck. Perhaps i will try to rework the FM again. -

Looks good, but the flag is wrong for 1979. It the Andreas cross which the russian Navy use, the soviet Navy had an other flag. -
In our western societies we have very bad thing. It is called political correctness. The so called Bürgerrechtler of civil right movement, the goodies, who believe that all people are good and only the society is bad and make them bad, tell us, that we should accept the way of life of the muslims. We must accept, that they build their mosques. We must accept, that they suppress their women, that they used forced marriages, that they not even learn our language, that they can do what they want. No intigration into our society, but build up a parallel world. Not the constitution and the civil code are the basic of the life, but the koran and the sharia. They demand and we retreat. Look to UK, pakistani moslems raped english girls for years and the police and politics looked away, because they feared the "rassist" accusation. No wonder that young not integrated moslems go to war. They grew up with the awareness that they can do what they want. Why not killing people who not believing in the right way?

MiG-21K MiG-21KS MiG-21KST MiG-21Kbis -
What for hell someone need a Uzi at home. For self defence? Why not take a Sherman or a Bradley? Stupid.
-
On US server i played in the last time a lot with my first Sherman. Its the M4A2E4, a gift for beta testers. I had it a long time in my garage, but i did not used it, till i found out, that gift or gold tanks are made for crew training. I moved my Easy8 crew into this tank and from this time the A2E4 became a nice vehicle. Its very rarely to see and a lot of folks are surprised that such a tank exsist and often they think that it is a Jumbo Sherman. Nevertheless, the normal Sherman has finaly a better gun with more punch, but with the A2E4 you get more credits. Thats nice. But it is difficult to get the Masterbadge. I needed a lot of battles, but finaly i got it.

After a long periode of looking for the reason of the FM problems it seems to be, that i was successfull. With a little bit luck i will release following carierborn MiG-21 versions: MiG-21K - navalized version of the MiG-21PF with improved engine R-13-300, canards and refuel probe MiG-21KS - updated version with stronger engine R-13F2-300, RP-22 radar and 4 wingpylons MiG-21KST - nuclear strike version in shape similar to the MiG-21SMT MiG-21Kbis - updated KS with engine R-25-300 -
I can tell you only about the LSK (EGAF), because the soviets sold only the plane, not the knowledge how to work it properly. When the GDR got the new MiG-29, the plane was used in the first weeks along the old CGI based doctrine. But very fast it became obviesly that this doctrine would not allow to fly the plane so that it could use all of his capacities. So it was intended to use the MiG-29 and MiG-21 together. In a similar way the iranians used their F-14s for a while to support their other fighters. But this periode was very short. At end of 1988 a completly new tactic was started to develope. It was more focused on aggressive fighter patrols along, over and behind the frontline with the task to achieve the air superiority over the combat area by annihilating enemy fighters, attackers and helicopters in dogfighting. It became closer to the western fighter doctrines. Parts of the new doctrine were already used during 1989 training routines, but by the end of the year it was not yet fully developed and implemented. So the time of dogfight training was more than doubled and the time of GCI intercept training was significantly reduced. It is rarely known, that the LSK had her own "fighter cup" competition and so looked the trophy (picture taken from Flugzeugforum.de) The Soviets had their own "Top Gun Fighter town" somewhere in Turkmenistan or so.

I read this article with certain smile on my face. It is full of statements like: "It wasn’t designed to do much besides intercept and shoot down adversaries who were flying not far from its airfield. Eastern bloc pilots were trained to slavishly follow ground controllers, so the Fulcrum’s systems, including its head-up display, were not highly developed, and the situational awareness the pilots got was very limited." Which show, that the design philosophy of the MiG-29 was not understood. The MiG-29 HUD gave you all information you needed. It looks different to a western HUD and was not as stylish, thats true. But it told the pilot speed, alttitude, course, angle of attack, target informations, climb and dive angles, distance to waypoints etc. And the statement of the slavish doctrine was only correct for MiG-21 and 23. For the 29 a completly new fighting doctrine was developed. This was not finished yet in 1990 but is was a big change. And so on, and so on, and so on. The best two statements i have read from pilots are: " The worst case for us is a German flying a MiG-29.", by a RAF pilot and a "They won the battles during debriefing with their mouth. We won it in flight.", by a german MiG-29 jock.

Its typical behavior of all sides. No need to worry. If a chinese recon bird would appeare 135 miles from Hawai US fighters would do the same stuff. -

Das komische ist, daß bei höherer Anfluggeschwindigkeit die Fangseile fast jedesmal getroffen werden, bei geringerer Geschwindigkeit überschießt das KI Flugzeug die Fangseil. Blöde KI. -

Gepard replied to PraetorH's topic in Deutsch
Zwei Probleme.

For the name i must take a look into my archive. Hope that i will find something usefull. Maybe. What i can remember now is, that in the first moment after the shock of the appearence of the tanks in Germany hastily a lot of big caliber guns were requisitioned (i hope this is the correct term) from large annimal hunters. This guns were used for a while till the Panzerbüchse came to the front. For the nomal 98K carabine armour piercing hard core bullits were developed and were used from 1917 or so.
-
It is not only neccessary to punch a hole in a armour of a tank, but you must destroy critical parts in the vehicle too. Critical parts are ammo, crew, optics etc, but mainly the crew. It is relativly unlikly, that you will hit a crewmember directly by shooting through the armour plate. To increase the chance to harm the crew it is neccessary to increase the numbres of debris inside the tank. And a bullit with bigger caliber will cause more debris flying inside the tank. Thatswhy the bigger caliber was used. At beginning of the war the main caliber of AT guns, Panzerbüchsen in german language, was around 7.62 mm (depends on the country, some had 7.92, other 7.7 or so) but this small guns were not powerfull enough so that till 1941 the caliber was rising to 14.5 mm. And such calibred AT guns you could not only use for AT but for sniper tasks or sometimes in the Flak role.

I found this picture in the web. It is said, that it shows a part of the wreck of the crashed malaysian 777 flight MH17. For me the holes are not looking like hits of a blast fragmentation warhead or of a continious rod warhead. It looks similar to hits by gunfire of caliber 23 or 30mm. If this is true, then the story of shot down by Buk SAM is false. The question is, wheter the picture shows truely a part of the wreck of the 777 or is it a fake?
