Northrop F-5E 'Skoshi Tiger 2'
Gepard replied to Spinners's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Sci-Fi/Anime/What If Forum
If i remember correctly to the japanese lessons i heard nearly 20 years ago "Skoshi" means "Little". So "Skoshi Tiger" means "Little Tiger". -
Its nice how some right wing press inflated a moskito to an elephant. Two long range bombers closing to Guam. In an distance of more than 300km they were intercepted by american fighters. Come on guys, nothing to worry about. And far away from "bear bombers circling over US territory" as fox news shouted.

Introduction dates, Su-25, opinions please
Gepard replied to arthur666's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Not plausible. The first planes were prototypes or pre production batches. Became operational in 1982 and later. Introduction into Afghan theater meant, that a handfull early planes were sent to evaluate the possibility of use such planes in AFG. At the same time they tried an armed version of the Yak-52 sportsplane and the Yak-38M STOL. Only for test reasons. The Su-25 proved to be the best solution and so it went into production. The Soviet Army had had no real interest for the Su-25, because it seemd to slow and ugly. But this bird was perfect for AFG and only when its capability were shown in combat the decision was made for full scale production. -

Exp3 News! (no, not really)
Gepard replied to FastCargo's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
The most cost making point i think was the terrain engine for SF2NA, which was TK's loved child and which failed to meet the needs. Instead to update the old terrain engine to a newer and better one he invested a lot of money to make a completly new one. A simple management failure, because he cant get the money back. Now he tries on the easy and simple way of mobile gaming by using already developed planes, objects and terrains. His decision. I would not bet on Exp3. -

Ja solche Gefechte bleiben einem in Erinnerung. Gut gemacht.

AI nihilistic, altruistic, and ritualistic behavior
Gepard replied to luft46's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I doubt that this is implemented in game. Would be nice if it would be, this would be closer to reality, but i dont see the AI acting like GCI vectored. The nations.ini i think only affects the single missions. In a campaign you has the campaign_data.ini were you can set different skill levels for the units. like here: //----- Player Unit [AirUnit001] AircraftType=HunterFGA9 Squadron=1RAF ForceID=1 Nation=RAF StartDate=05/29/1965 DefaultTexture=RAFCamo1 BaseArea=Biggin Hill RAF FC BaseMoveChance=0 RandomChance=100 MaxAircraft=16 StartAircraft=16 MaxPilots=16 StartPilots=16 Experience=100 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< this entry Morale=100 Supply=100 -
Croatian air force MiG-21 replacement
Gepard replied to Stipe's topic in Military and General Aviation
If Croatia would by the Eurofighter or other high end fighters it would become a finacial disaster. It are not only the costs for the plane. There are costs for spare parts, training, fuel and and and. A fleet of Eurofighters, or Hornets, or MiG-35 or Gripens would be nice to see on the taxiways or in the shelters. But you wont see them very often in the air, because the operational costs are much to high. Its the same old story. If you ask a man which car he wants to drive, then you get the answer: Porsche, Ferrari, Rolls (add whatever you want). And then ask which car he is really driving and you get answers like Volkswagen, Peugeot, Seat, Fiat, Chevrolet or some jap cars. And now ask yourself why it is. The first are dream cars, but does not fit the daily needs, the laters are not glamorous, but fit the daily needs. The same is with the planes for an Air Force. Of course it would be nice to have the best of the best. But do you really need the most highly developte stealth plane which causes costs without end or do you need a low cost working horse for all day jobs? How often do you really need to intercept hostile B-2's or B-1's or Tu-160 and how often do you have to intercept Cessnas whos pilots are unable to find home? You must ask for what job do you need a plane and then you must choose the plane which can do the job for the lowest price. So simple. But the best solution does surely not fit the need for glamour and thatswhy it is so difficult to choose the best solution. And this would be the best solution for croatia: Alenia M-346 Master. Mach 1+ capable light combat plane and trainer. -
What's with the US and faulty avionics?
Gepard replied to GalmOne's topic in Military and General Aviation
Its the performance of the G36 in Afghanistan. The G36 is a nice weapon for the shooting range and it looks very cool. True. But the field performance is not as good. Problems with the optics and the overheating problem during longer combats. If you fire only 30 rounds you will face no problems, but in a heavy fire exchange, how it happend in AFG, the G36 overheated. Its a question of reliability. Okay, the G36 is much more reliable than the L85 of the brits or the M16 of the US Forces, but in comparision with the Wieger940 or original russian Kalaschnikows it will always lose. Croatian air force MiG-21 replacement
Gepard replied to Stipe's topic in Military and General Aviation
The trick is not to get the planes with the highest possible performance, but the planes with the right performance. If you look to Croatia, so the answer is that the czech L159 ALCA or the british Hawk or the italian M-346 would be enough. The ALCA and the Hawk with Blue Vixen Radar are AMRAAM capable and could work well in the air denfence role. They easily can reach speeds around 1.000 hph, which would be enough for such a small country like Croatia. And this planes can fly slow, so that they also can intercept slow prop planes like Cessnas. And the major point, they are not so expensive and their operation costs are low. All planey you have in your list are more or less expensive to operate. The threat potential of Croatias neighbours are relativly low, so high end fighters are not really needed. It this should change more potential planes could aquired and pilots who are skilled on the ALCA, Hawk or M346 could easily transfer to the real fighters. -

Not the first time, that this happened. The Tunguska meteor around 100 years ago also hit Siberia. -
AI nihilistic, altruistic, and ritualistic behavior
Gepard replied to luft46's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
The american pilots in Korea were vectored by radar stations on an island close to the MiG alley. During Lebanon war the Israelis operated under AWACS control and all other wars in which western Air Forces were included AWACS and GCI played a war deciding role. If radar support was available for western Air Forces was available, then it was used. So it is no soviet unique position. In Vietnam it was a little bit different, because the combat area was a little bit to far away for good radar coverage, but even in Vietnam Warning Star planes an radar picket ships were used to support US attack forces. The pilot traing standard which you find in the Nations.ini is used for single missions. If you play with the values you will see, that the skill level of the pilots in the squadron will change dramatically if you has a nation with POOR or a nation with EXCELLENT pilot skill. -
What's with the US and faulty avionics?
Gepard replied to GalmOne's topic in Military and General Aviation
Same thing in Germany. The G36 assault rifle showed problems in Afghanistan. Became to hot while firing long bursts, with the danger of self ignition of the ammo, so the gun would fire till the magazin was empty. They should have choosen weapons of the Wieger940 series. This were east german made Kalaschnikovs for NATO caliber 5,6x45mm. During a weapon show for peruvian costumers the marketing crew put one Wieger942 on concrete and drove with a W50 truck (vehicle with 5tons load capacity) over it. Then they took the weapon to the firing range and the Wieger942 worked very well. After the political change the construction papers disappeared and now an US company builts a weapon called STG2000 which is a 100% copy of the Wieger940 series. -
Okay, the Sea Harrier and all other Harriers were excellent planes at their time. But to be honest, they are outdated. Oldtimers. Would you like to drive a 30 years old car?

AI nihilistic, altruistic, and ritualistic behavior
Gepard replied to luft46's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
This is not correct, if we are speaking about WoX. It is true for SF2. I have tested it with WoI Operation Kadesh. There you can make a surprise attack. You can close to a enemy attack formation and open the fire. Only when the first enemy plane is hit, the entire formation breaks up, drop its bomb into nowhere and engage you. I have tested it with Neshers vs MiG-17, MiG-15 vs F-84 and so on. Operation Kadesh its a true improvement if you want to stay in the first generation sims. -

Do you have heared from Sirena warning device? Gave you a warning beep if radar locked on. Was developed to counter the radar range finder of the Sabre. Was used the first time in Korea 1953. Reduced the soviet loss rate significantly. The MiG-17F had such Sirena system and it had a radar range finder too. -
Rambo 2. It was so much LOL. So stupid, so seldom heroic stupid. And Rambo 3. Much more LOL and much more heroic stupid. No real actors, only brainless dialoges, stupid black white sceme. Here the heroic americans, there the stupid red vilains. But there were a lot of soviet made war movies which were also mostly rubbish.

For first generation the best solution to get better AI behavior is the Wings Over Israel add on Operation Kadesh. -
Hatte ich im letzten Februar shcon mal hier eingestellt. Das ist ne ägyptische Su-20, die sehr nah an den ganz frühen Su-17 ist. Der Bremsschirmbehälter ist dran, wie hier gut zu sehen ist.

How was the title of the movie were they dropped an elephant by parachute? "Good Morning Vietnam" was also great.
