My next terrain project
Gepard replied to Gepard's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
I did it again and this time the roads of two neighbor tiles fits much more better. Vietnam has now a dense street network. Next step it will be to paint some villages on the tiles.- 675 replies

My next terrain project
Gepard replied to Gepard's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
After long studies of sat images from Google Earth i realized what i disliked on Green Hell. Vietnam is highly populated. Nearly all 1000 meters is a village, while the Green hill is nearly empty of villages. Thatswhy i thought i should make roads on each Farm tile. This is what the first attempt looks like: Unfortunatly i was not carefull enough while painting the roads. When i marked the end of the roads on tileend i had a calculation error of 18 pixels. Thatswhy some tiles does not fit and the roads have a gap on tileend. What means, back to start. But the principle is confirmed. I must only adjust the positions more carefully. When the roads are good i will place villages on the map, so that the terrain will be heavily populated.- 675 replies

My next terrain project
Gepard replied to Gepard's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
I had it in mind too, but i looked at Google Earth and found, that this terrain would consist of 95% forrest, some rivers and villages with small farmland. -
My next terrain project
Gepard replied to Gepard's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
I got Green Hell 3.5 to run. As usal it was a simple typo which had me let fail a couple of times. To be honest, really happy i was not with the tileset. Thatswhy i have started to merge four 512 pixel tiles to one new 1024 pixel tile. Then i have changed the tiles from bmp to jpg, what allowes a better performance of the game. I also changed the sea tiles to darker color and modified one coast tile to have not anymore only bays beside bays. Screenshots all WIP, a very early stage Right side you see the darker sea tile. On the coastline you see from left two original GH3.5 tiles, then are following two new made tile The new farm files are merged from 4 original GH3.5 tiles Its still a long way to go. New rivers of different size are still to make, perhaps road maps. So i can say, release date X-Mas. But dont ask which year. -
Happy New Year to everyone of you. May it be peacefull. Stay healthy. Because firework is not allowed this year in Germany, i use flares to send you the Happy New Year greetings.

My next terrain project
Gepard replied to Gepard's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Very early stage of China vs Vietnam terrain. At the moment i use Green Hell 2 tileset. And i'm not really happy with it. Green Hell 3.5 i dont get to run. There the _data.ini file is missing, so that i get strange TOD trees. It are only the first steps on a long, long way. I have also played a little bit with the files for a modern Battle of Britain terrain in the timeframe of the 1960th or 70th. It is faster to make, because the majority of the terrain, the tiling, setting of rivers and roads etc is already done. So only the target areas must reworked. I will sleep over the ideas, before i decide which terrain becomes the first in the development line. BTW, today i got an other idea of a terrain. What if the Argentinians after the conquest of the Falklands would have sent their Carrier Group to Ascencion Island, the british base mid in the Atlantic Ocean on the shores of Angola? This base would become an important supply base for the british Falkland campaign. If the Argentinians would have destroyed the RAF base at Ascencion island, the Brits would have had big troubles. Screenshot vietnamese F-5E vs chinese J-7I The insignias are very similar. Hard to tell who is who. -

Short description: Socotra is a relativly big island on the shores of the Horn of Africa. It belongs to Yemen. Socotra is an ideal position to control all shipping lines between the Mediterranian Sea and the Indian Ocean. The power who controls Socotra can easily block the oil support from the Gulf to Western Europe. Socotra is the cork in the bottle neck, like Djibouti, the Suez Canal or Gibraltar. From mid 1960th to the fall of the Soviet Union, the soviets had an airbase on Socotra. In the 1980th on the base one regiment (squadron) of Su-24 bombers was active on Socotra. This terrain is made for a scenario that the Americans must defeat the soviet forces on Socotra island. They had to operate from carrier positions in the Gulf of Aden. For all guys who love to fly Air Force planes i made a temporary american airfield in Somalia. In the timeframe, where the soviets have no own carriers the single missions are focused on Socotra island. Is the MiG-15 inferior at dogfighting or am I just a crap pilot?
Gepard replied to clim995's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Some years ago i found somewhere in the net a report of a RAF pilot, who had flown the Sabre in Korea War. It was an analysis of the "felt" advantages and disadvantages of the MiG-15 against the Sabre-A (or was it a Sabre-E?) Unfortunatly i have found only the cover of this report on my harddrive. I don't know where the rest of this report went. -

Gepard replied to clim995's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
In game the Sabres are overrated. You can also say the MiG-15bis is underrated. They are not made by the same developer, thatswhy the differences. You may cheat and change the flightmodel of the MiG-15bis to make this plane turn better. Its your decision. Its only a game. In reality the planes were comparable. The plane with the better pilot on the stick would win the battle. The MiG had a better climb rate and acceleration. At altitudes over 8.000 meters it was able to outturn the Sabre. Below this altitude the advantage of the MiG was gone and as closer you came to earth the Sabre became better. It was a bad tactic to try to outcurve a Sabre in a MiG-15bis. The tactic said in such situation to use the better climb rate and pull up. You also must know, that the F-86F and later versions are at the same development level as the MiG-17. I dont know why the soviets gave a new type designation to the MiG-17. The most parts of MiG-17 and MiG-15 are the same. Only the wings and the tail section are different. The MiG-17 was developed as MiG-15 Strela 45. So if you want to fight the late Sabres, then use the MiG-17. -

Is indirect fire possible?
Gepard posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Mortars and howitzers shooting indirect fire, while tank guns are shooting direct fire. Indirect fire means, that the bullet is flying a high ballistic curve. Direct fire means a low ballistic curve. In game it seems to be, that only direct or low or flat fire is implemented. All guns are shooting on direct way. But for shipguns of big caliber or mortars or howitzers it is nor realistic. Has someone an idea how to make howitzers shooting in a high ballistic curve? -

View File Insignias and tactical numbers for stock tanks Tactical numbers and insignias for stock tanks ***************************************************** This mod is made for SF2. ---------------------------------------------------------- I. In the history it was common that tanks got tactical numbers and showed insignias for better friend and foe identification. This package included modded stock tank files, so that the tanks will show numbers and insignias in single missions and campaigns. It contains insignias and tactical numbers for: Leopard A1 to A5 Centurion Shot and Shot Kal M48 Magach 3 M60 Magach 6 M48A2 M48A3 M60A1 T-34-85 T-54 T-55 T-62A T-72A For M48, M60, T-54 and T-55 i added workable anti-aircraft-machine guns. ATAS -Air to air Stinger as alternative for gunless fighters?
Gepard replied to Icarus999's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Sci-Fi/Anime/What If Forum
The Stinger is overrated. The soviets learned in Afghanistan such much about this missile, that they were able to invent counter measures which reduced the efficency of the Stinger very much. Lipa IR jammers, flares exactly working on search frequences of the Stinger seeker head and so on. Modern Stingers are much better now, but they cost a fortune. Over one million US$ the Lithuanians had to pay for one missile. Much to much. For the half price you get french Mistrale missiles. One deciding factor for a missile on a fast jet are the power of wind and air drag, which the missile has to withstand. And this power is enourmous. The starting container of the stinger is very light and cannot withstand if the wind power becomes to much. -
If you want to fly a MiG-21 there is a quick and dirty solution Open the file MiG-21MF.ini with Notepadeditor The lines should be: [AircraftData] AircraftFullName=MiG-21MF "Fishbed-J" AircraftDataFile=MiG-21MF_data.ini LoadoutFile=MiG-21MF_loadout.ini Then add the line CockpitDataFile=F-4E_cockpit.ini save the file Now you can fly the MiG with a F-4E cockpit
-
Multi-player was always a problem. Thatswhy it does not exist anymore in SF2 world. Try to fly only single missions with a stock plane. Lets say F-4 Phantom. If this works you can download a flyable MiG-21 from this site. There a lots of them available. You dont need Multi-player.
-
Perhaps SFP1 does not like Ubuntu. It was written for Windows XP. Do you have tried to choose an other plane or an other terrain? Sometimes mods can cause such a problem as you descripe.
