VMFA-232 sent its last F-4N crew through TOPGUN in 1985 or 86. Air Force assets have flown during the TOPGUN course, mostly as adversaries, but also as blue assets during larger sorties. TOPGUN used to have an Air Force Weapon School graduate as an exchange instructor. I am not sure if they still do. The big difference between TOPGUN and Red Flag is that TOPGUN is a school for individual pilots to become tactics instructors, while Red Flag is a training exercise for units.

Hauksbee, Check the graphics requirements. "Cliffs of Dover" is very graphic intensive, way more than IL2 or the Strike Fighter series. I had to get an ATI Radeon Graphics accelerator in order to play Cliffs. Not sure if that is the problem, but that sounds like what was happening to me before I bought the accelerator.

Recommended Reading, Military and General Aviation

Here is my list. "Mig Killlers of Yankee Station" by O'Conner gives a debrief of all of the Navy Mig Kills in Vietnam. "Crusader, Last of the Gunfighters' by Adm Gillcrist is a good book about flying the F-8 in and out of combat. "Night Fighters over Korea" by O'Rourke is a good story with many technical parts on flying the F3D. Lastly, the best debrief book with tactics about Vietnam is "Clashes" by Michel. This book is written like a TOPGUN debrief. The who is taken out of it, though if you know your history, you know who the players are in some of the engagements. (Olds, Cunningham, Ritchie) Here are some good links. "The Ault Report" http://www.history.navy.mil/branches/org4-25.htm This report led to better air to air missiles and more importantly, better training through the formation of TOPGUN. "Aces and Aerial Victories" http://www.afhso.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-100921-010.pdf Official Air Force debrief of every USAF MiG Kill in Vietnam. USAF Downloadable books at http://www.afhso.af.mil/booksandpublications/titleindex.asp -
I worked with Bill when I first got into the fleet. He was the Powerline SNCOIC and I was the OIC. Great first job in the squadron working with the Marines.

This is a paper I did a few years back. CAUTION It is rather large with the diagrams and pictures. (7.7MB!) USMC KW Night Fighters.doc
-
Since the paper was a help to the guys doing modding. Maybe these files will help. They are declassified performance data for the F3D, F7F-3N, and the F4U-4. I have a hard copy of the F4U-5N. Will have to scan it or write the data down. f3d-2.pdf f4u-4.pdf f7f-3n.pdf

Thanks Wrench, I was hoping it would help. Nice 5N. I can not wait for the new Korea Mod..

I know General Flock. It has been a few years since I saw him. I think he retired a few months back as a two star.

Posted the article in the Air Combat school area of aviation stories. Here is the link. I had two copies that looked the same. 50/50 chance this is my last rough draft vice the final draft, so if there is couple of typos, sorry. http://combatace.com/topic/62616-usmc-korean-air-war-night-fighters/

MAWTS does not have F/A-18 sims. They go to Miramar to do simulation.
-
I will have to figure out how to load my paper. The pictures and diagrams make it really large. It is 7.5Mg.

We do not fly our own jets so I am not Cha Chi. In fact, many of the Junior pilo'ts names are on the other side of the jet. Usually an F/A-18 squadron has 12 jets and 18 pilots. My callsign is Pyle. I am a big guy, especially for a fighter pilot. I played college football as a lineman. My first day in my first fleet squadron (non training) i did an impersonation of Pvt Pyle from Full Metal Jacket and the rest is history..

War for Isreal instructions question
LouG posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I am stil having trouble getting War for Isreal campaign to work. Here is more details on what I have done. In the War for Isreal readme instructions it says the following; Then run the exe once and go to the new mod Dir it created and if you want to first delete all the planes in the Aircraft Dir. I ran the new exe that I created for War for Isreal but no mod Dir was created. I can not find any other exe file that came with the campaign download. The directions then say the following; Then Drop contents of the 7Z files into the new MOD Dir, overwrite when it asks. You have to run the exe first to get the options.ini generated and the new mod dir for the mod to work. Once again the only exe file I have is the one I created, StrikeFighters2 WarforIsreal. When I run it, SF2 WfI screen comes up but the only options are SF2 Europe, Isreal, and Exp 1 missions, aircraft and campaigns. This is my first attempt at adding a campaign to SF2 and I am obviously missing something. I am have Windows Vista on this computer, maybe that is the problem. Here is the entire instruction with the parts I am having trouble with are in bold. 23 Aug 2010 Strike Fighters 2: War For Israel V2.0 Campaign For SF2:Israel. or SF2,SF2:E,SF2:V and SF2:Israel Merged Install. This is a Campaign i created to hit on the possability of the situation in the Middle East coming to a head and represent the possible Air Battle. The Campaign includes IDF, USAF, USMC, USN with Carrier support. Also 2 Mercenary Aircraft for Campaign play. Also Added F-4E for Iran and Egypt and Mirage 2000EM and F-16C for Egypt. Also Added F-5E for Iran. Installing the Campaign: Campaign files with menu pics, description and Music files are included. You will need the "SF2 Israel" Terrain. Drop the ModuleWFI.cat into the SF2 Main Games Menu Directory under the Program Files Folder. Also Included 2 Icon Files for the Main Dir to use with the Desktop Shortcut. Then make a copy of one of your SF2's exe and rename it to "StrikeFighters2 WarForIsrael.exe". Also make a copy of the INI and rename it StrikeFighters2 WarForIsrael.ini in the main dir. Open the "StrikeFighters2 WarForIsrael.ini" file and add this to the bottom: [Module] ModuleDataFile=ModuleWFI.cat DefaultTerrainData=IsraelME DefaultAircraft=F-15C This will allow the use of the Menu file ModuleWFI.cat that goes in your Main Programs "Menu" dir. First this mod uses the Stock F-4E_Kurnass and F-16A_Netz LOD's so you will need to have these, Or have SF2 Israel loaded. Then run the exe once and go to the new mod Dir it created and if you want to first delete all the planes in the Aircraft Dir. Then Drop contents of the 7Z files into the new MOD Dir, overwrite when it asks. You have to run the exe first to get the options.ini generated and the new mod dir for the mod to work. You should be ready to go. Before anyone complaigns about stock planes in this mod the A-4N is From the A-4AR Fightinghawk by Ravens**t and the Mig-27 is a modded version using the stock usable Mig-27 skins, and is by lindr2 Both can be downloaded at CombatAce. War for Isreal instructions question
LouG replied to LouG's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
MaverickMike, Thanks for the help. I knew it must be something easy that a newby would not know. It looks awesome. -
I downloaded the War for Isreal mod and I must of done something wrong. When I try to play it all of the War for Isreal screens come up but I do not have any new campaign or aircraft options. The options are the same as Strike Fighters 2: Isreal. Can someone help out a newby?

War for Isreal
LouG replied to LouG's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I started from scratch. I reloaded the expansion pack and then added the War for Isreal as per the instructions and I am back to where I was before. The War for Isreal screen comes up and new music plays, but no new aircraft, campaigns, or missions available. I started my SF2 Europe, Isreal, and Expansion Pack and none of the War for Isreal mods are there either. -

I put the module.cat in the menu folder like the directions said. I put all of the other files in the Mod folder. When that did not work, I put each of the items in their respective folders (flight items in the flight folder, effect items in the effect folder, etc.) It did not change a thing.
