  1. Here's the thing, though: the real WWI pilots knew flying low was a bad idea. And they did it, anyway. The real WWI pilots knew a lot of things were bad for them. But they still did them. Look at the what the RFC pilots did, time and time again, in the Battle of Arras, for example. They knew that flying BE2cs and Strutters was basically suicide, that the Albs could chop them to pieces at will. The other scouts knew that ground strafing was the worst kind of mug's game, guaranteed to get their bus filled with holes. But they all did it, anyway. It's easy, in WOFF2, to just grab alt and stay the hell out of harm's way, especially since it's been a long time since I was a young, dumb, and full of... whatever youngster, and I also have the advantage of 100 years of air combat theory. But the actual pilots didn't do that. They had a rotten job to do, they knew it was rotten, but for the most part, they did it, anyway. WOFF2 won't chop you for LMF. WOFF2 won't punish you for not flying straight-and-level at 2-3K to get useful pictures. So, anyway, maybe 10k feet up is a bit much for ground support missions. But like the man said, you can always fly lead. The way AI leaders seem to want to grab all the alt over the airfield (rather than the more fuel-efficient grabbing alt on to the way to the first WP) is annoying, anyway.
  2. BH&H2 and VR

In order for VorpX to work, it has to be able to "hook" into the .exe of a game, and there are only a limited number of "hooks" supplied with the software. VorpX does not have a "hook" for CFS3.EXE, and none of the other available hooks can be repurposed for it, either. (Kitbashing and tweaking existing hooks is a common way to get "non-included" games working with VorpX). So... no 3D with VorpX. However, VR rigs make superb (if pricey) head-tracking solutions. Basically, you play the game as normal inside your VR headset, using whatever virtual desktop/bigscreen software you choose. The free OpenTrack, run at the same time, provides the head-tracking. Currently, I'm using a Quest 2, so I: * establish the PC link with the Q2 * launch Virtual Desktop PC (like $15 on Steam, provides awesome, adjustable desktop viewing) * This brings up my desktop inside my Q2 * Launch OpenTrack (it's configured to use my Q2 as an input) - this effectively takes care of WOFF2's TrackIR hook * Launch WOFF2 I now have a nice big screen inside my headset with headtracking. The downside, of course, is that you can't see your keyboard. Which you actually totally can, if you peer down your nose and squint. So, just like any sim, you need a HOTAS, and you DEFINITELY need a HOTAS if you're strapping stuff to your face. TL;DR: No, VorpX does not work with WOFF2. There's other ways to do hacked-together stereoscopic 3D with virtual desktop and reshade 3D, but I've done it, it's fiddly, and not worth the hassle.
  3. Enhancing default terrain in FE2

Ooof, thanks again to everyone for the answers, but building an Armchair Aces install looks like pretty much a massive amount of work. I guess I'll just have to dream about being shot down repeatedly in Bloody April :)
  4. Enhancing default terrain in FE2

Thanks to all -- Jan's terrain is a thing of beauty. Now, next noob question: understanding that I'll need campaign mods and plane mods, what is everyone's recommendation for earlier war fights? To be honest, I'm taking my SE5a up in the default 1917 campaign and I'm just having my way with it (10 kills in 3 missions, playing fairly conservatively).
  5. Enhancing default terrain in FE2

With the "s" at the end of the Terrains. Yes, I searched the forums :)
  6. Enhancing default terrain in FE2

Thanks for pointing me to Jan's terrain, folks. I imagine that the installation process is the same, except that I need to go to the SF2/FE2 saved game mod directory rather than the program directory. Yes pretty much: C:\Users\<YOU>\Saved Games\ThirdWire\FirstEagles2\Terrains
  7. Hello folks, As a new FE2 pilot I'm looking at enhancing the stock FE2 terrains to something a little less sparse. I've seen screenshots of various mods that add individual trees and other details, but when looking through the FE terrain mod directory I don't see any particular mod that stands out for this purpose. Any suggestions on this one? Again, not really looking to add aircraft or new maps just yet, I just want to have something more appealing to fly my SE5a over. Thanks!
  8. SimHQ review of OFF BHaH

I'm not a big fan of SimHQ but Jens's review was spot on. OFF is indeed a magesterial piece of work. --scharmers
