  1. Problem with RFC-60

Tried several times with same result if I try and enlist on 18th August (first date for the Nupe). I went forward another click to the 23rd August and works fine so started career from there.
  2. Another great site some may not know about is the Cross and Cockade website: http://www.crossandcockade.com/ The links page on this site is a great resource and the journals are very informative.
  3. Would like to fly a career with RFC-60 but have a problem. I can create a pilot in the squadron and move the date forward to the first available flyable aircraft (Nupe 17) but whenever I try to enter campaign mode the sim crashes with a runtime error. I haven't had any issues with the other squadrons that I have flown in (RFC-24 and 56, RNAS-8, Esc 3 and Jasta 2) and haven't had any other errors. Anyone any ideas as to why it may be happening? Edit - Crash seems to happen when accessing the Duty Room. Went through a mission without going to Duty Room first and it flew ok until landing when errored with unable to update squad members then CTD with runtime error.
  4. What are flares for?

Not sure if they have a use in game but in reality they were used for issuing commands/warnings. An example is their use during the confused series of fights in which Albert Ball lost his life. Cyril Crowe wrote that as he circled above Fresnoy he came across Ball, who was headed towards Lens. Crowe joined Ball and as they neared Loos, Ball fired 2 red flares in quick succession which Crowe states is the "signal for sighting enemy aircraft". Crowe couldn't see anything so followed Ball down and watched the start of the fight with LvR's Albatross.
  5. The award of multiple medals was quite common for officers on the British side in both world wars though, apart from the VC. The award of a second and subsequant medals were indicated by a metal bar across the ribbon and the phrase 'and bar' for example after their name. Mannock afaik was VC, DSO and 2 Bars, MC and Bar.
  6. 10th February 1916 Dear Mr Newby, I trust that by now you will have received the telegram informing you of the loss of your beloved son Cecil. As his CO I write to confirm the circumstances surrounding the death of 2nd Lt Cecil Newby. Cecil had settled in well here with the 24th and I gave him the responsibility of leading his flight on the morning of the 8th. I commanded the patrol as we set off at dawn to escort an observation flight over the enemy lines. As we crossed the lines I spotted an flight of enemy craft and signalled both flights to intercept. We engaged the enemy vigourously but one especially brave fellow doggedly pursued the craft we were charged with protecting. Cecil, on seeing the danger to the observation machines, dived on the fellow with total disregard for his own safety. On sensing the growing threat to the mission, Cecil heroically rammed the Fokker. You may be assured that Cecil gave his life valiantly in the service of King and Country. Although he was only with the squadron but a few days I can assure you Cecil played mess rugby to the utmost of his ability and I had him pencilled in as a ball carrier when we entertain the 18th next week. I have recently received notice that his younger brother Cyril has completed his flight training and is to join the squadron. Please be assured that I shall take young Cyril under my wing and I have no doubt he will do himself and the Newby's proud. Sir, your obediant servant, Major L G Hawker
  7. Been lurking around these forums for just over a week and really kicking myself that I didn't discover this Sim earlier. For many years I have been keenly interested in WW1 aviation (probably started from the Biggles books in the school library) and over the years have built up quite a collection of books on the 1914-1918 air war. First WW1 flight sim I bought was Microprose's Knights of the Sky back in 1991, followed by Red Baron, RB3D and Flying Corps. Also played Falcon 3 and 4 purely for the campaigns. I had given up on the flight sim genre as titles became more and more 'Quake at mach 2' but then stumbled across this site over Easter. BHAH arrived yesterday morning :) I had been expecting to have to wait 2 weeks but was 5 days from order to delivery in UK so nice surprise, especially as I have a few days off work. Only annoyance is that I could only get the CD version of CFS3 from Amazon but I suppose next day delivery at £3.99 isn't bad. My original plan was to ease myself into the sim with lots of free flight practice but that went right out the window seconds after after install finished. My request to join Lanoe Hawker's lot in St Omer in Feb 1916 was accepted and I am now putting the DH2 through paces. Not seen much action yet but I guess that will change. A few dawn patrols, one strafing mission (after which I vow never to make a second pass again!) and 2 ballon busting flights. J O Andrews bagged the gasbag on the first...but I finally have my first claim, an observation balloon NE of Ypres. Loving this and will keep you informed as to the fortunes of 24 RFC.
