Flew my first campaign mission today. Assignment was to guard some obversvation planes over the front. Had to fly from quite a ways back from the front to meet them, then go the 11 way points, circle for 17 mins and fly home. Sounds easy enough. over the front we ran into some DR 1s from Jasta 23. I sent one down with a couple of quick bursts to his cockpit. Score 1 for the noob pilot! .... er... anyway, I'm all jazzed about that, circle around some more, fly with the observation planes, get lost as they are close but I cant see them (I'm at 4000ft and they are at 9000). 2 hours later, I think...sheesh this is taking a while, so I hit the X for warp and bing...we are into a flight of Pfalt's...not good. I'm in a turning war (I'm in a SE5a) and he's winning. I've got the throttle low to make tighter turns but he's gaining on me, he's at 5 oclock and I'm thinking, this is it! no altitude, no where to go, and then out of the blue comes one of our boys! He drops right on the tail of the Pfaltz, and nails him. Sweet! We fly around for a bit, trying to limp home, it's now 2 1/2 hours into the flight. I figure, how about warping, cause the wife has been ignored all this time. I hit X and the next thing I know, it has cruised me out to the north sea! That's not the worst of it, I'm out of fuel and it's telling me to turn back. I turn around, but the map isnt any help, just a big blue splotch, and a big grey splotch. Great. I fly to a flat spot, and land. Turns out I was behind enemy lines... I end up in prison for the rest of the war. pfft. Lesson learned, DONT USE WARP! I have no clue why it sent me off in that direction. I guess it's not like auto pilot. Four questions: How come all the planes of the AI on my side are faster than me? They climb and pull away from me, but I cant climb to meet them. I can dive and kind of catch up, but then I'm too low.... I'm using the auto mixture. What is the average time of missions in the campaigns, without using warp? Is there anyway to see the skin you choose for your pilot, before you pick it and begin flying? there are so many skins to choose, but I dont know what they look like. Is there a walkthru or manual for OFF? something that tells things like what warp is, what the campaign time frames are, how to start in different years, etc? Thanks! Broadside ps--fun game

I'd like to join mp. Just a bit intimidated by the files needed to fly it....with the new patch and all. I cant just jump into mp and fly, can I? It's more complicated than that, or at least that's my impression (been reading way too many threads and they are all jumbled). BuB -
Good grief! The Spad 13 is a beast to fly. Too much rudder and it throws you into a hard spin. I kept crashing and crashing, until finally I tried the Se5a. First (QC) mission, I actually made some great manoevers, lost no wings, avoided all spins, and downed a couple of planes (I knew I wasnt THAT bad of a pilot). I'm just trying things out on medium difficulty, so that helps a bit, but why would anyone want to fly a spad? (well, besides the speed, and the dual guns...heh). Question: Does the trigger actually fire both the main AND the top wing mounted gun? I cant tell whether they are both firing....dunno if I need to configure another button for it. Broadside

Thanks Dej. It stinks that I lost that pilot. I just had made a new pilot for total realism (110%) in Quick Combat, and ended up downing 5 planes (I just happened to catch a few that were already shot up, and made a few quick moves (and it doesnt hurt to have them start in "unfavorable" situation). I took the time to write out my claims, but it didnt stick...waste of time. thanks for the information. I'd checked out the manuals in the directory, but they dont really tell you much of anything at all regarding how to play OFF, or anything about the campaign. As far as I can tell, it's a matter of trial and error and these forums. I'll check out the skins. Thank you very much! Broadside -
make sure and get paper not plastic at the store next time, and keep your receipts. That'll save some on Toilet Paper at least....

ooohhh snap! Best advice I can give you BW is: if you cant say something nice, dont say anything at all. I like RoF too. Gonna stick with it and buy more planes. OFF is fun. Good flight sim. see? easy to be positive. :) -

So you just have to choose one, fly your mission to take a look at it, then choose another, take a look at it in your next mission, etc? Quick question about campaigns. I had a pilot who had survived a few missions, but then I used him for a quick combat to check something out (full realism except for the wind), I crashed, and my pilot is now shown as deceased....so here's the question: if I had gotten a kill or two in the quick mission, would that have counted toward his campaign stats? And would his flight time have counted as well? If not, then never ever use a campaign pilot for quick combat! And if you are in a mission, and use the warp, does the time you warped not count toward your flight time total? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just so curious about so many things. Gotta find a manual. -
Se5a >spad 13
Broadside uda Barn replied to Broadside uda Barn's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Thanks Duce...Yeah, it was set to fire both. good to be sure :) Al, you're right! I'm not fond of the spad atm. The Dr1 on the other hand....very enjoyable to fly :) I might just have to switch sides. -

Thanks Duce. I'll watch for the flight times next time. No, I'm using the automatic mixture (one less thing to think about at this point as I'm getting used to the game itself) Well, ROFL, my 2nd campaign didnt turn out so well. Flying from a different squadron, somehow I'm at late 1918 (havent figure how to set the dates for the pilots yet), and I'm flying a 57 minute patrol over the front. 7 minutes in, I'm flying along, keeping up with my wingmen, the scenery looks GREAT, it's a stormy day, headphones are turned up for realism, all is well when BAM, I'm in flames and spiraling to the earth. roll the death scene movie. All I can figure was I was hit by AA? or lightning (is that in here too?)? Seriously, there was nothing going on. I thought I heard a faint boom and I was looking under my right side to see if there was a battle below. Almost blew me out of my seat! Very startling. there MUST be a spot somewhere with all the skins...otherwise, how do we know there are so many? -

Installation procedure for CFS3 and OFF and extras
Broadside uda Barn posted a topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Having spent a fruitless few hours tracking down software for my SWFF2 joystick yesterday, I was thinking that I could save a lot of headaches that are looming on the horizon. I have a whole bunch of stuff here that needs installing (CH pedals, TrackIR 5,) or will need installing (CFS3 and OFF are still in transit somewhere). With that in mind, I would really appreciate any tips that anyone has regarding installing these programs/items! Also, is there a particular procedure for installing CFS3, it's patch, OFF, and it's patches? Thanks for any input! Broadside -
Installation procedure for CFS3 and OFF and extras
Broadside uda Barn replied to Broadside uda Barn's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Heh! It's better than Barney, and MUCH better than BS. BuB works, but my friends all call me Uda....ok, that's not true, except maybe after a couple of beers. There really is no need for the SWFF software at all. The FF effects are FANTASTIC in OFF, and I must say are much better than RoF. No need for any CH software either, unless someone can recommend it for some reason? And for anyone who is installing/reinstalling OFF, the instructions in the FAQ are very detailed. Only things I didnt see were turning off the twist in your stick if you have pedals (it's in the tips/cheats thread I think). Inverting the pedals was easy, thanks to the faq. There isnt anything in the FAQ about desk fans...my tip (and you can add this to the tips/cheats file uncleal): Make sure that your desk fan is blowing slightly higher than your eyes, or your contact lenses will dry out. Option: purchase a good set of Goggles! and with that in mind: Thanks for the Faq and all the help in getting OFF up and running everyone! I'm ready to start the campaign I think. gonna have to be british...the Se5a is the plane to fly, since I cant keep a spad in the air. Fokkers are great, but who wants to drink warm beer??? Uda -

I dont think it does. I actually can fly in RoF amazingly well, but OFF is extremely difficult. Different flight model, yes, flunks it? noooo. -
Finally got OFF today (and CFS3 as well, both arrived at the same time). I got OFF installed (didnt need to install CFS3), patched it with all 3 patches, read the whole FAQ and pretty much followed all the recommendations, and read the tips/cheats thread. If anyone can help me with a few questions, I'd greatly appreciate it: I deleted all the entries for brakes in the controls, so that the brakes on my pedals wouldnt activate. Did these crates even have brakes? Do I need to reassign them? I followed the suggestions for graphics settings for a high end nvidia card (I have a 260GTX). Many of the settings were different from what I had set for other games, but I havent tweaked them in a long time. Are the suggestions in the FAQ pretty much the best settings for a high end system? Any recommendations? The cockpit is different than I expected. I'm looking over the guns but that's it, and if I press F5, I get 3 gauges that are lapping each other (altitude, speed, compass). I'm assuming this is the virtual cockpit? I assigned a key to the virtual cockpit, but it's basically the same as F3. Is there another view for the cockpit so that I can see all the gauges? (I only have RoF as a reference, which shows gauges, your stick, etc.) (with TrackIR, I can scoot back in my chair and see the stick, and clock, etc, but then I'm too far from my desk to fly! lol ) Slightly related to the above: Is there a key to reset trackIR (while in the game) so that the position you are looking at becomes your home view? (for instance, if I set it so that I can see the cockpit from further back in the seat, then when I need to reset to that position, I just hit F12) And which bubble or command in TrackIR will allow me to adjust how far I have to turn my head to see 180 degrees behind me? As it is now, I have to turn my head really far, and can only see the screen thru the corner of my eye! Hitting the windows key to go back to the desktop doesnt work. It kind of locks up unless I hit Alt Tab to get it running again. Is there a better way to get to the desktop? How many people are using the hard core damage patch? Any other things I should know? Thanks! (and sorry for the lame questions.) Broadside ps--(I got the pedals working so they're not reversed, deleted the twist rudder, set the details settings to 5 for all except Terrain and Scenery, which are set at 4, TrackIR is working great with the beta drivers)

I just got my copy of CFS3 from Amazon. Couldnt determine if it was 3.1 or not, so I put in the OFF DVD first, it loaded, asked forthe CFS3 disk, I put it in, it copied a couple things and finished. No need torun CFS3 ever, or to load it for that matter....I didnt. I looked for a DVD version of CFS3, but couldnt find one.

Al--I actually read so much over the last couple of days, some of it twice, that I forgot much of what I read, or worse, where I read it. Thanks Olham. You've been VERY helpful! Thanks Condor! I copied those settings and am getting 50+ fps. very smooth...and no white jaggies at all! Doesnt matter how fast I spin or snap my view....makes me wonder what was the difference. Homeboy, you have any clue what might be causing it? also, since my 260gtx has a bit of umph, got any recommendations on what I can adjust for better quality? -

Thanks Scout. This makes so much sense. I finally was able to revert to my original drivers ( 181.22 dated 2/7/09) and everything is stable again....no crashes or lockups. I guess I was expecting very fluid graphics and FPS because of my system, but you're so right, an older program isnt going to necessarily run things as well. I'm glad I can compare RoF and OFF. For my 2 cents, they are both necessary  I'm just going to live with the jaggies until we can find a solution...newer drivers isnt it! Olham, thanks for the images. I copied most of those (they are very similar to the ones in the graphics FAQ) settings. I'm off to search for the maximum fraps location. One more noob question: how do I stop my plane? I can land, reduce throttle, but I just keep going until I hit a tree and die a horrid and conspicuous death. Cant find the command to turn off engine...thanks! -

reloading to my original drivers. If that doesnt work, I'll have to nuke the drivers completely and reinstall the card from scratch. Hopefully that'll solve the lockup problem in OFF. Come too far to not have it work. I'll start a post in the tech forum. Thx -

I assigned the virtual cockpit to the joystick. I have 896mb memory on my video card. Just spent the last hour + updating my driver, but the newest one 186.18 seems to crash OFF hard. I couldnt even do a rollback, it was that bad...nightmare. Couldnt even restore to earlier point, the driver borged things horribly. I get this error message: The Nv4 display driver has stopped functioning. And this happens when I use trackIR to look left...it locks things up not the first time, but the 23nd or 3rd look. Interestingly, RoF doesnt have this problem. Looks good, no white triangles even if I snap my look behind me. So it's not a driver issue with TrackIR. So it must be something in OFF or CFS3. I guess I'll have to try and reinstall everything from scratch to see if that fixes it. Any other ideas? -

I'm getting about 25 fps from a backed up view of the cockpit, and about 60 from right over the guns. Also getting white jagged boxes when I pan right or left quickly with TrackIR. I remember reading something about this in the help file I think.... Somethings odd....I actually get better fps in RoF with bloom effects on than with OFF. Gotta figure this out. -
Planes and RoF analysis by its general manager

This is an INTERESTING read, and very informative as to plane releases, the NA launch, their always connected necesity, etc. http://riseofflight.com/Blogs/post/2009/07...-Statement.aspx new planes are going to be $7.62 each (and their decision on why to charge for planes seems actually reasonable...). The Nieup 17 comes out next week, and the SE.5 and Pfalz D3 are in beta and available at end of July. Broadside -

Perhaps we could have one thread, or a specific forum to discuss RoF. I like the people here and respect their opinions, and I'd prefer these opinions over others. I was going to link the blog post (which is REALLY well written, informative, and frank regarding their launch in NA) by the main guy at Neoqb, and some other stuff (there's a patch just released as well)....but I will hold off unless there's a specific thread/forum for us (yes, I can say us, since my OFF *just* arrived today...off to load it and CFS3 now). Track IR Beta or regular software?

Installing the Track IR 5 now, and curious if there's any issues with the 5.0 beta 4 version of the software and OFF...? 4.1.037 is the final version. Which is best to install? Thanks! BuB
