  3. Before New Zealand signed and subsequently cancelled the F-16 deal in the late 1990's/ early 2000's and then got rid of its air combat wing all together, the original plan for the RNZAF Skyhawks was for them to be in service till replacement around 2007-09. A second upgrade was planned for around the year 2000 to keep their teeth sharp until replacment. The Kahu II program would have added a GPS navigation system, long range anti ship missiles (most likely the Harpoon), a laser targeting pod (the Litening pod had been chosen) and the ejection seats were going to be replaced with rebuilt UPCO/Stencil SIIIS-3ER seats as used in the A-7. The signing of the F-16 deal meant the Kahu II project was not need, however it was briefly reinstated when the F-16 deal was cancelled before the new governments intentions to completely scrap the air combat wing become apparent. Stencil SIIIS-3ER seats and Harpoon ASM: Litening targeting pod and GBU-16, I have seen photos of Kiwi Skyhawks with 3 Mk83 bombs on a TER on the center station so I cant see why 3 GBU-16 couldn't be carried there as well: And who knows maybe If they had had the upgrade and a National Government was still in power they might have even ended up in Afghanistan: (Hay look a flying pig....)

Here is my take on a Kahu II A-4K dropping a GBU-16 during a CAS mission over Afghanistan....

SEAD HAS BEEN CONDUCTED BY THE ESCORT ELEMENT OF EACH STRIKE DESTROYING A TOTAL OF 12x TOR-M1 SAM LAUNCHERS, 9x ZSU-23-4 SHILKA AAA VEHICALS AND 6x HAWK SAM RADARS DEFENDING THE CAPITAL. 2x F-5A FREEDOM FIGHTERS, 6x F-14A TOMCATS, 4x MIRAGE F-1, 3x F-4E PHANTOMS, 2x CHENGDU J-10 AND 1x SAEQUH (THUNDERBOLT) AIRCRAFT HAVE ALSO BEEN NEUTRALISED DURING THE STRIKE MISSIONS. FURTHER STRIKES TO MEHRABAD INTERNATIONAL AND PAYAM AIRPORT WILL COMPLETELY REMOVE ANY IMMEDIATE SHORT RANGE AIR TREATS AROUND THE CAPITAL. REQUEST DIRECTION FROM JFC SHAPE ON FURTHER OPERATIONS.
  10. Unit: No. 1 Squadron Royal Australian Airforce Mission: Strike against Doshan Tappeh AB (TAB12) Assets: 2 x Strike Aircraft (RAAF F/A-18F) and 6 x Escort/SEAD (RAAF F/A-18F) Target: Runway Flight departed Kuwait International at 0641 Local time. Flight approached the target from the east. 4x AGM-145C-1 JSOW were launched at the runway from maximum range and destroyed the runway. The strike element then conducted SEAD around the air base. 2x Iranian F-5A Freedom Fighters were detected to the north by the flight leader and escorting section. Both F-5A fighters were quickly engaged and destroyed. Immediately after the destruction of the two F-5A 4x F-14A Tomcats engaged the entire flight by surprise in what become a large furball. SAM sites around the airbase took also this opportunity to turn on thier radars and engage us with radar and heat seeking surface to air missiles. The exact sequence of events is somewhat lost in the confustion but the superior manouverability and weapons of the Super Hornets gave us the edge and resulted in the four F-14A Tomcats being destroyed with no losses. However this was by no means an easy victory both sides launched a multitude of air-to-air missiles and engaged each other with cannon fire at very close range during the dog fight. During the SEAD 1x Hawk CWAR, 5x Tor-M1 SAM lauchers, 3x ZSU-23-4 Shilka AAA vehicles were destroyed. During a straifing attack which destroyed 1x Saeqeh(“thunderbolt”) Fighter F/A-18F Block II Super Hornet A44-202 was hit and damaged by a MIM-23A Hawk SAM. Air-to-Ground Kills: -Runway by Plt Off McCarthy with 2x AGM-154C-1 JSOW and Plt Off Fry with 2x AGM-154C-1 JSOW -Hawk CWAR by Plt Off McCarthy with 1x GBU-38(V)3/B JDAM -Tor-M1 by Plt Off McCarthy with 1x GBU-12E/B Paveway IV -Saeqeh(“thunderbolt”) Fighter by Plt Off McCarthy with 20mm M61A1 Vulcan Cannon -Tor-M1 by Plt Off Fry with 20mm M61A1 Vulcan Cannon -Tor-M1 by Plt Off Fry with 20mm M61A1 Vulcan Cannon -ZSU-23-4 Shilka AAA by Plt Off Cobby with 1x GBU-38(V)3/B JDAM -Tor-M1 by Plt Off Cobby with 20mm M61A1 Vulcan Cannon -Tor-M1 by Plt Off Cobby with 20mm M61A1 Vulcan Cannon -ZSU-23-4 Shilka AAA by Flt Lt Williamson with 1x GBU-38(V)3/B JDAM -ZSU-23-4 Shilka AAA by Plt Off Dalas with 1x GBU-12E/B Paveway IV Ait-to-Air Kills: -F-5A Freedom Fighter by Plt Off McCarthy with 1x AIM-120C7 -F-5A Freedom Fighter by Plt Off McCarthy with 1x AIM-9X -F-14A Tomcat by Plt OffCobby with 1x AIM-120C7 -F-14A Tomcat by Flt Lt Williamson with 1x AIM-120C7 -F-14A Tomcat by Flt Lt Williamson with 1x AIM-9X -F-14A Tomcat by Plt Off Fry with 1x AIM-120C7 Damge/Loses: -F/A-18F Block II Super Hornet A44-202 was hit lost an engine to a MIM-23A Hawk SAM. Aircraft made it back to Kuwait International safly but will require a entirely new engine. Spare engine will leave Australia via a RAAF C-17 in the next 12 hours. Intell: -No less than 7x MIM-23A Hawk SAMs fired during our attack all but 1 were defeated with ECM, chaff and spoofing/ manovering. -No less than 52x SA-15 Gauntlet SAMs were fired from Tor-M1 launchers during our attack, as with previous engagements all were easily defeated with ECM, chaff and spoofing/ manovering. -The amount of air defence represents a high threat that should be followed up on with further SEAD operations.

TO: JFC SHAPE FROM: NO. 1 SQUADRON ROYAL AUSTRALIAN AIRFORCE INTELL FROM OUR RECENT STRIKE ON THE TWO GOVERNMENT OFFICE BUILDINGS IN TEHRAN COMBINED WITH THE RESULTS OF OUR PREVIOUS STRIKE ON THE TEHRAN HQ BUILDING LEAD US TO BELIEVE THE ABILITY OF THE IRANIAN HIGH COMMAND TO EFFECTIVELY COMMAND AND MANAGE MILITARY OPERATIONS HAS BEEN SEVERELY CRIPPLED. THE DESTRUCTION OF THESE THREE COMPLEXES AND RESULTING LOSS OF SENIOR IRANIAN MILITARY STAFF OFFICERS HAS BEEN LIKENED TO THE LOSS OF THE ENTIRE PENTAGON TO THE US MILITARY BY ONE ANALYST
