  1. You may be quite right about the setting problem. I've read all the faq's about settings, but I still have issues with real smoothness. One of the biggest I have is when I fly low to the ground. I'm using the sopwith Tripe which turns fairly quick. Problem is when I turn fast I'll see like white triangles or patches of white on the ground. As I said I'm running at 1050 x 1680 which is the natural res of my LCD monitor. I have a 2.67 Ghz Core 2 Duo running a 8800GT 512 with 2GB of RAM. I'm not trying to steal this thread, so If this needs to be moved just let me know. But If I can get this to run smooth enough I can put off building my new PC a little longer and get the funds ready to do so. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  2. I've been following this thread for awhile now and since I got hooked on OFF, I've been think of a new build myself. Right now I use a 22" Samsung and OFF runs just barely good enough at 1050x1680 at around 55 FPS. It hesitates quite a bit, but runs just well enough to get by. I'm really surprised you don't want to go with AMD MB and CPU as they seem to offer better bang for the buck and a "slight" amount of futureproofing.Although for a graphics card I still like the GTX460 1Gb by Gigabyte. OK its not top notch, but it sure is a great card for the money. Since I'll be staying at 1050x1680 I just wonder how much MB and CPU I really need to run OFF fairly smooth ? I was going to go with an I5-750, but for the same money I think I can do better with AMD, even though I've always had Intel. Is there a reason no one really talks about AMD ?
  3. I take it he does prints as well.I have one of Robert Taylor's in my living room of the Flying Tigers, but Ivan's work is really outstanding. I'll have to look for his prints here in the US. Always a dream of mine to draw and paint, but I just don't have the skillsets, you really do have to be born with them.
  4. It was suggested that maybe a thread should be put in the Knowledge Base for PC's to run OFF. Maybe list your systems and any issues you may have had and help someone avoid the same ones. I am also looking to build one fairly soon, and have the same questions.
  5. Could we somehow link this to a new thread in the Knowledge Base section? I do see one just started there for Specs needed for new Computer by GHunter, but wasn't sure how this should be handled. I am doing new research to find out a good starting point and I'll put up the picks very soon, probably today. I'm looking into different websites as well, including ExtremeTech, Tomshardware and Tweaktown, If there are any others that are worthwhile please let me know.
  6. Thats exactly what I want as well, the brand new cutting edge stuff is crazy expensive.I was looking at AMD CPU's and some of the newer CPU's are very expensive, yet some are very reasonable and perform almost as well. I'm still on the fence about AMD or Intel. AMD looks very good as far as price Vs performance.
  7. Ok I have to admit I'm hooked on OFF. My Current PC runs it ok, but I'm looking forward to rebuilding my PC and probably switching over from WinXP to Win7. I've heard that AMD is a great way to go, and also ATI Graphic Cards, but the ATI software always had like 3 parts compared to the 1 of NVidia. So please let me know what you have and any suggestions. I'm also looking to do this myself, so any suggestions on helpful websites for building and reviews would be greatly appreciated. I've always used TomsHardware, but I'm sure there are others, I've also usually used Gigabyte MB's but I'm open to suggestions. I also heard OFF has issues with ATI graphic cards. Is this true?
  8. Great advice guys I appreciate it, thats the thing about this sim as well as RB3D, you "feel" about the pilots that are flying. The newest one I have managed to shoot down 3 aircraft.Thats one thing about getting low, which a lot of the AI pilots seem to do. If I get in a burst while there low they usually crash into the ground before they can recover. But Claiming kills is shall we say interesting. I really have no idea what type of aircraft they were. I don't have labels turned on, and yes i will eventually know what the aircraft are. But 3 kills and probably none will get confirmed !!! Arghh. As they said to Stachel, you must have your claims confirmed. Yes it is a cruel world isn't it? I'm flying the Sopwith Tripe now ,and its an amazing aircraft. Only one gun, but thats good because I need to aim and shoot better, and that one gun makes me have every shot count. Should I make it easier for myself by turning on labels or anything else for that matter? Yes I want it realistic, but not so much so I don't get to get into it and enjoy it. Opinions?
  9. Thats the thing I've been having brit pilots the whole time.I actually had 7 die so far. The one that I did have in a campaign started in early 1916. I was supposed to scout out troop positions and was just flying in formation, trying to stay nice and tight , had the TAC on and didn't see anything when all of a sudden bullet holes and the sound of machinegun fire filled the air. Never even knew what happened.I was set on fire and started spiringly down. It was all over in less than a minute, never even fired a shot and he was dead.
  10. NS13Jarhead (Scott ?) is that a print by Jim Dietz by any chance? Its amazing the amount of detail , and how he conveys whats going on. Yep I was doing a search and found it. Its called Circus Rolls at Dawn, just in case anybody wanted to know.Robert Taylor and Dietz are two of my favorite artists.
  11. Well I tried early in the war around 1916 and didn't survive more than 1 mission, now I'm in the Sopwith tripe and I've made it to 2 missions. How long should pilots live anyways? (Reposted)
  12. Should I re-ask this in General Discussions, or can I request that this question be moved there? That was my fault I was in General discussions and moved over here, and just plain forgot. Yikes 17 hrs isn't very long. Now I know why the music in OFF is sort of downbeat, just the same its really good BTW. I think it might be an interesting question for others to read as well.
  13. Well I tried early in the war around 1916 and dintsurvive more tha 1 mission, now I'm in the Sopwith tripe and I've made it 2 missions. How long should pilots live anyways?
  14. Thanks, it wasn't meant as a put down, its just I'm still getting used to it, and thought I was missing how to bring it up. Most of the replays would have been of me going down in flames anyway, but I did manage to plow into a couple of trees as well, so it would have made a nice mix of crashes. So far my pilots don't last more than maybe 1 or 2 missions anyways. I really like that Sopwith Tripe though, except I keep forgetting to check the petrol gage and have run out twice so far.Plus I can always tell friendlys from enemy because the enemy usually only have 2 wings.
  15. Just wondered IF OFF has Replays of the actual dogfights, as opposed to the map shown and events printed out on screen.
  16. Here's a few, it was a shame there was quite a wind so a lot of aircraft didn't go up, but at least none came down suddenly!
  17. Just wondered If anyone here has been there in NY. I went last year, finally after years of wanting to go. All I can say is If you ever get the chance go ! To actually get close and even get to touch these great aircraft is something. Now to see them fly is something even better, although I must admit I have great admiration for the guys that went up in these aircraft, never mind start shooting at each other. There very fragile, at least they look that way. The engines are all so different too. One blew out a rod or piston just while we were there. I took some pictures too If anyones interested.
  18. Somehow I wound up getting 2 CFS3 Copies.I really don't need 2 of them. I ordered it from Amazon, and the return cost is $4.53, and the total cost for buying it was around $10, so that would be a waste. Maybe this should be under buy/sell/trade, but I kow this is the Cd you need for OFF so I figured it would be better to put it here. I'm in the MA area, but If anyone is interested you can have it for the postage
  19. Thanks but thats the exact order I did the first install with and also did the defrag before I began. And no I didn't have any OFF or CFS3 installed before. According to a few emails i received I'm on the bleeding edge as far as OFF goes, so I'll have to twiddle with my settings to see what needs to be "toned down" a bit to get it to run correctly. There also may be something else running in the background, I had issues with my iRacing last night.I had this type of issue before with another PC and never could track it down. I was going to try Game Booster to try and shut down some of my extra things runninng in the background, but I'm still on the fence with that.
  20. I found the DVD version of CFS3, so I installed from that, then I did the superpatch and then the minipatch. So when i run OFF , I do it from the icon on my desktop and do it without the DVD in the drive.AS far as OFF goes I just installed it from the DVD. I don't have the Hat in the ring yet.I just bought OFF about 2 weeks ago, doesn't it have BH&H already on it?
  21. Thanks Olham I'll try those settings out and see what happens. I thought maybe my system was a bit slow, for OFF, but from what I'm seeing and thanks to you and others , I think I can make it work well enough to have some fun with this great sim. Thanks again for the settings I really appreciate it !
  22. Thanks Guys, especially you Rabu !:)
  23. Well I tried those detail settings and it just didn't run very well, so I'm at all 2's except clouds at 1, and as i said it runs at around 59 all the time ,but I get stutters near the ground, mostly when i see lots of trees, so its probably the trees doing it, so If I can reduce the tree detail a bit it should run pretty much stutter free.
  24. Thanks at least i know I have the proverbial needle in a haystack ! I'll keep at it. I actually think of my 8800GT as "new" even though I know its not. I try and get as much as i can out of something, before I go on. New is good, but sometimes old is good too. As a good example just look at what planes were flying. Simple planes without HUD's you fly by the seat of your pants. But you can't make 8800GT's "fly" so I have to do the best with what i've got, at least for now.
  25. Thanks to all for your responses, although I wish I would get an email to let me know I had responses ! Now that I'm in the poor farm for buying all the drinks(guess I'll have to just sniff the castor oil and hope for the best !) I'll let you know I've killed at least 7 pilots so far. Only about 3 died from being shot down, the others shall we say had an early demise by hitting old terra firma, and/or trees. It amazes me you ca shoot anything down at all. I'm not the best shot in the world but seeing constant pcs flying off and then seeing the enemy flyaway, or wprst yet come back and plaster you is amazing. Most of the fights were instant ones, with me taking off and trying to get enough altitude so as not to crash into the ground. BTW I am using the Thrustmaster stick X and it works very well. The most difficult part is just seeing the enemy. I now flt from an outside view most of the time, except when in an actual dogfigh, and even then i might pop out to see where he went. I tried one campaign, however i was supposed to attack a railway hub , and never did find it at all, soI strafed an airfield instead. When i returned I was told to keep up the good work.So far the only plane I could shoot down the Fokkor DVII with was the Sopwith Tripe, although the pup isn't bad, seeing out of it is rather difficult. The rear engine DH2? is great for seeing out of ,but it moves along in a rather liesurely fashion. And who flies in the rain in these things anyway, its hard enough seeing where your going !
