From:http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8244028.stm Flight site hacker 'identified' Avsim is one of the largest sites serving the flight sim community The publisher of a flight simulator site targeted by a hacker in May says it has presented a file of evidence to UK police identifying the perpetrator. Avsim said it had "incontrovertible evidence" about the hacker's identity. The attack wiped data held on two servers and "effectively destroyed" the site, which is still being rebuilt. The US firm said it expected the criminal complaint, filed with London police, to lead to the alleged hacker spending "time behind bars". "We will not name any names, but have incontrovertible evidence of the individual that performed the hack," said Tom Allensworth, the publisher and CEO of Avsim. "We have protected the forensic evidence and provided that evidence to the London police. We are committed to bringing justice to bear on this case." Mr Allensworth told BBC News that the evidence was submitted on Monday to the Southwark division of the Metropolitan Police, which was "acting on behalf of another constabulary". 'Next level' The US site, launched in 1996, covers all aspects of flight simulation, although its main focus is on Microsoft's Flight Simulator. In addition it hosts a forum and allows enthusiasts to download extra content for flight simulations, such as new landscapes. The firm claims it is the most-visited flight simulation site on the internet. "Its contribution has been immeasurable," said Derek Davis, editor of PC Pilot magazine, following the attack. The firm said it had spent $50,000 (£30,000) to bring Avsim back online since the 12 May attack, including $25,000 from users. It said it had filed the criminal complaint after giving the alleged hacker "two opportunities to settle" the case. "The individual did not avail himself of the opportunity - in fact, he has ignored our proffers," Mr Allensworth said in the statement. "We are now doing as we promised this person we would do: ratcheting this up to the next, criminal, level." "We fully expect that the criminal complaint...will result in the perpetrator spending some time behind bars - under UK law." The firm said it was seeking prosecution under laws that "deal with unauthorised use of a computer, unauthorised and criminal theft of data, and numerous other violations of other computer and online laws". The Metropolitan Police could not confirm whether it had received the complaint.

DiD Thirdwire
MigBuster replied to MaverickMike's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Thats still very good - especially if it was the old WOV/WOE versions! I play DiD for campaigns - gives a bit more of a challenge although have completed 5 out of the last 10 or so in SF2V - bit rusty on carrier ops it appears -
Iran decided to keep them as compensation for the Iran / Iraq war I read. Which is fair enough if you consider that war I guess.

Great news if they get them - its a lovely jet!

What`s wrong with the MiG's
MigBuster replied to magic1104's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
The F-104G could do over Mach 2.2 and had a better climb rate than the F-4 according to most sources - it really was a rocket ship due to its fantastic thrust to weight ratio and thin wing. Here are some pilot stories: http://www.combatsim.com/review.php?id=5 http://www.916-starfighter.de/Ruminations%20on%20the%20F-104.htm -
What`s wrong with the MiG's
MigBuster replied to magic1104's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Depends on the model - are they stock F-104s? when you say "to the best manoeuvrable speed" - I'm assuming you mean the MiG-21PFMs corner speed in a horizontal turn? Havnt tried the Mystere or thunderstreak but most early 50s fighters were built for turning fights - e.g the Hunter and MiG-17 can out turn pretty much anything in the horizontal. The MiG-21 is more of a high level interceptor so it may have had better horizontal turning ability than the F-104 - but not over the Super Mystere/F-84 - so you would be best using speed in a vertical fight against those. -
Low RCS versus airframe performance
MigBuster replied to vanir's topic in Military and General Aviation
No its a point not an excellent point which he seems to have made a few times before for some reason: http://forum.combatace.com/index.php/topic/44833-now-f-35-is-in-a-bit-of-trouble/ No thats the name of the game in Afghanistan only - the F-22 is also there to defeat a modern IADS if required which do exist and are a bigger threat than any AF - and is also something an A-10 also wouldn't be much use against. Not sure flying low and slow taking hits is where they want to be - the A-10 is not bullet proof everywhere - usually they would be above small arms range and only come down at high speed to strafe if required from accounts I've read. Its all about accuracy - especially in regards to avoiding civilian casualties - on scene ground FACs can provide GPS coords to any jet with a JDAM that can get there quick enough. Probably attrition for one thing - how many will be good to go in 20 years time? - of course even if there are none its okay because the world will be a peaceful utopia by then and still be flying 4th Gen **** done and done http://forum.combatace.com/index.php/topic/44701-rip-f-22/ -

Unless some one tests it against a flight model chart - or an ex A-7 driver is about to comment then go with the ones you prefer is my advice -
F-16I Sufa makes emergency landing
MigBuster replied to Nesher's topic in Military and General Aviation
Looks like a smooth landing if that's without the engine - even has time to hold it above the runway for a bit. -
Difficult to say really because I suspect the infrastructure of the Iraqi Air Force was totally dismantled in 03 so they may be starting from scratch again - in which case it doesn't matter which way they go. However why buy Russian - the airframes are comparable in performance (inferior in some aspects / better in others) to the F-15A/16A which they were designed to compete against - but where it counts in the avionics and technology they are so far behind the argument is mute. Lucky for the Aussies you are not in charge then - do you know the difference between a 5th gen fighter and a (Claimed) 4++ gen one?. And please - I really don't want to see any links to Karlo Kopps laughable material. You do realise the Russian economy has been in a pretty bad way since the collapse of the USSR so im not sure why you think they stood a chance of keeping up with the US R+D budget Being able to out turn another jet is fine if it can - but good luck out turning a modern missile. Well that assumes you know which model the Iraqis would be getting. F-16As to Block 15 are pretty old hat unless they have the MLU on them in which case they are equal to a block 50s. If LM ship them Block 60 equivalents they have something that can beat anything - a 5th gen fighter should kick its A though.

All my weapons are gone.....
MigBuster replied to gull19's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
You need to use the correct Weapons Pack - with the correct weapons editor for the version of the game you have. For Oct 2008 WOE the weapons editor was dated v022008 http://www.thirdwire.com/downloads_tools.htm My advice is - Dont install the pack directly into your game - install it to an empty folder on your desktop - then copy the weapons folder into your game only. -
mouse pointer wont move
MigBuster replied to ONETINSOLDIER's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
It looks like a Windows problem - either its damaged or you have some program preventing the mouse from working in game, or you may need to totally remove the game when you uninstall it. Are you running an admin account? If you have have reinstalled the mouse drivers then maybe try another USB port -
What's looked like "combat tree" on the scope?
MigBuster replied to Murphy'S's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Haven't seen anything about what it looked like - have read bits about it - just says its a display - one source said it used the Radar Display to show IFF. But then again there was APX-80/APX-81/APX-....etc -
Last Australia Vietnam MIA return By Nick Bryant BBC News, Sydney The remains of the last two Australian servicemen missing in action from the war in Vietnam have been returned to their homeland. The remains of Flying Officer Michael Herbert and Pilot Officer Robert Carver were found last month. They were found at a remote jungle site near the border with Laos where their bomber crashed 39 years ago. They were honoured with a military ceremony at an airfield on the outskirts of Sydney. Night raid A military band was on hand, and so, too, an honour guard, as the remains of the two airmen were carried from the plane in flag-draped coffins. With this brief ceremony a chapter in Australian military history came to a close. Flying Officer Michael Herbert and Pilot Officer Robert Carver were both aged 24 when their Canberra bomber went missing after a night-time raid over central Vietnam in November 1970. Last April, the wreckage of the bomber was found in remote jungle near the border with Laos, after a search conducted by an Australian army history unit. Three months later the remains of the airmen were found, and then identified by Australian and Vietnamese forensic specialists. Official interest in finding and repatriating Australia's missing war dead was revived in 2007 after a veterans' organisation found the bodies of two soldiers. Another soldier was found that year, with a fourth found last year. Now all the bodies have been retrieved and repatriated. The United States still has nearly 1,800 servicemen unaccounted for throughout Southeast Asia, with some 1,300 in Vietnam alone. from http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8230023.stm
