Wrench Posted yesterday at 05:55 PM Posted yesterday at 05:55 PM I know this is sort of coming out of left field, and my research has been coming up a bit more than empty. At the start of WW2, lets call it early 1942, around the time of the first raids on Darwin, can anyone conform or deny if RAAF Darwin was a dirt strip or fully paved (concrete? asphalt?) I know most of the smaller fields were dirt, and several further north as used by the Dutch were paved. Anyone that's ever worked on terrains knows the stock airfield, well, suck. And with judicious hex editing, one can 'repave' the bits to something different. thanks in advance!
Major Lee Posted yesterday at 06:31 PM Posted yesterday at 06:31 PM https://www.airforce.gov.au/about-us/history/our-journey/establishment-raaf-base-darwin This site mentions dates, runway numbers, and runways being "sealed", meaning paved, presumably with tar and gravel ("chip seal" in the US).
Nightshade/PR Posted yesterday at 07:06 PM Posted yesterday at 07:06 PM Looks like they were dirt.... https://ozatwar.com/airfields/raafdarwin.htm
Wrench Posted 22 hours ago Author Posted 22 hours ago Dopey me!!! I'd seen some of those, and it just didn't register...duhhhhhhhaaahhhh with a judicious (sp?) repainting, a (somewhat) more presentable dirt-ish runway, with some 'expansion' areas added. Haven't moved the hangars and such yet. There is, however, an unfortunate side affect. Having done this for so long, you'd think I'd remember that the 3W airfields all pretty much use the same textures. As you can see at Batchlor below (and by inference Fuiloro Field) the paid parking ramp remains in the stock orangish dirt. So I guess I repainting them too. I also need to 'lighten' the asphalt color for the runway2a at Kendari. But all in all, this a GOOD progress!!! thanks guys !!! 5
