FalconC45 162 Posted April 29, 2007 Recently I've been watching alot of Anime. Especially with Sci-FI themes. My favorite series is Gunslinger Girl. GG is a very intense drama. Despite of the title, its about an goverment agency in Italy. The agency deals with corruption/terrorists/etc. The thing is that they use unwanted children, mostly girls to do the dirty work. How you say? The girls are cyborgs. Not the terminator style, these cyborgs are realistic in technology wise. The agency use fiber muscle tech for example. Then there's "conditioning" or brainwashing. These girls have handlers. Each handler treats their cyborgs differently. The drama really test your emotions. One time I almost wanted to throw something at the TV. Not because it's sucky its because I was suck in with the story. The characters in the series are very well done, you will want to grab one of the girls and hug them and spoil them to death . The series is about the girls instead of being mission based. Oh there's missions in there, but they're quick and very bloody. The entire series is 13 episodes, about 30 minutes long. I highly recommend it. Falcon PS What are your recommentions for anime watching? Esp SCI-FI ones? PSS. One more thing, GG is kinda slow at first but it'll hook ya.
SayethWhaaaa 245 Posted April 29, 2007 Easy, Neon Genesis Evangellion! The first 5-6 episodes are kinda cheesy overload, but from that point each episode gets grittier and grittier until you get to the end and everything's just a big mess! If you can get past the first 6 eps, you'll be sucked in like a black hole! NGE was the yardstick when it was released 10 years ago!

Another series that made me wanna slap a character Especially that main boy character (I forget his name.). Last night I finished another series (part of adult swim on CN) called Eureka Seven. Reminds me of NGE. Falcon

MigHound 0 Posted April 30, 2007 PS What are your recommentions for anime watching? Esp SCI-FI ones? PSS. One more thing, GG is kinda slow at first but it'll hook ya. I've been collecting Anime since 1990. I have several thousand hours of it on VHS & DVD. I've always been the Mobile Suit Gundam fan... the original "Universal Century" stories. Macross, of course. There is a fairly new OVA series out called "Fairy Air Force: Yukikaze"... in spite of it's title, this is an awesome Anime that has some really amazing Fighter aircraft designs. ...anyone remember Outlanders? hehehe. I've not seen Gunsliner Girl in anime but I just finished the Manga. Like you said the story line starts slow but sucks you right in. My anime indulgence at the moment is Divergence Eve, good Sci-Fi line and well drawn characters (anime girls) and great voice acting. After that it would have to be all 3 Full Metal Panic series. Once again, great but implausible story line, well done characters, action-giant robots-explosions-embarrassing situations, you can see it on the Anime Channel. Two other series I like are Jinki Extend and Coyote Ragtime. If you have the Anime Channel On Demand check out the 1st annual Anime Awards. If you wanted to see what the actors that provide the voices look like this is your chance. Some have faces that belong on radio, but the Ladies from ADV studios look like the characters they voice. Best anime movie is a no brainer.... AKIRA
FalconC45 162 Posted May 2, 2007 I bought the box set of Divergence Eve and just finished it. Indulging ending though. I hafta get the second part called "Miska's Chornicles". I got Anime Network on demand but not the actual channel. I'm watching Jinki Extend and Coyote Ragtime and Wild Arms on demand with few other series. I have seen 2 of Full metal panic series. What's the third called? BTW, I just finished reading the volume 1 of GG manga. So far it kinda follows the anime but the manga gives more details of Henreitta's wounds before she got recruited by the Agency. I watched the Anime Awards, pretty cool idea. +Fates 63 Posted May 3, 2007 I watched a lot of Starblazers when I was young, but that's it. Star Blazers was the shindig man....loved it....but when I seen Anime as a thread topic...all I could think of was porn.....

Falcon Full Metal Panic, The Second Raid. It just released in the States earlier this year. I've got the uncut Japanese language episodes <subtitled>. It takes place about six months after the last FMP ep24. Have to get the US release, noticed some differences watching the trailer. And I got thick reprint of Gunsmith Cats today. Definately NOT for any one under 18.
FalconC45 162 Posted May 3, 2007 (edited) Thanks! I'll keep a eye out for FMP: The Second Raid. I need to get the first 2 first. Watched them on ANoD. OOHHHHHHH GUNSMITH CATS! I loved the anime. Might get the reprint :). Falcon Edited May 3, 2007 by FalconCAF
GwynO 16 Posted May 3, 2007 Im a casual anime fan, what i mean is if its on i while watch it but i dont really go out to find stuff because my best friend in school was a hard core fan and ive always wanted to keep from getting "hooked" like he was man he must have spent at leat £3000 between 1998 and 2002 on manga vhs imports and most of it is good but two series really stuck out in my memory, The Guyver series is an absolute classic, very good sci fi theme. My second favourite is Crying Freeman, although not sci fi it is a deep plot oriented series that i think id reconmend to anyone wanting to see more Anime. Have fun and take care not to spend all those hard earned dollars Manga Rules
FalconC45 162 Posted May 3, 2007 Seen the Crying Freeman anime, excellent classic. As for Guyver, I only seen the live action flicks not the anime unforunately. But I saw the first epsiode of the new Guyver anime. But for some reason ANoD stopped showing it. Same goes for Coyote Ragtime Falcon

I wish my cable service get the actual channel Falcon I can't get cable at all in Wolverhampton so it's a trip to the dvd store for me lol. Have you seen Toshio Maeda's Urotsukidoji? Never ever watch it in a dark room while so called friends drop acid into your drink without telling you! Ghost in the Shell is a classic sci fi anime too as is Vampire Wars, i wish we had ANoD. FalconC45 162 Posted May 4, 2007 Yeah I've seen Urotsukidoji (AKA Legend of the Overfiend) 1 thru 3. I really liked 1, 2 was ehhh and 3 was blech. I heard there's 4 but after watching 3, I avoided 4 like the plaque. Seen both of the Ghost in the Shell movies and the TV series. Never heard of Vampire Wars, what is it about? Falcon IMHO, I think Urotsukidoji should have finished at one, the others just killed it for me. The ending of the first was gold! Has anyone seen Super Atragon?? Been trying to find a copy but it's a bugger to get hold of apparantly... (in Australia anyways) Here's the synopsys if you don't know about it: "Moments after an atomic bomb falls over Hiroshima, a secret Japanese submarine sails into battle against its American counterpart, and both are lost to history. Some fifty years later, the long-lost sub astonishingly reappears, as a mysterious black cylinder threatens a special UN task force sent to investigate unusual phenomena in Antarctica. However, the incident in the Antarctic is only the first round in a cataclysmic battle of wills between two descendants of an ancient race dwelling within the Earth. Standing against them is a single, amazing ship - the RA, a Yamato-class battle sub secretly rebuilt after its supposed destruction in World War II. A science fiction masterpiece with a brilliant story and stunning animation, Super Atragon is a classic no one should miss!" Also, I used to be a HUGE fan of Patlabour 1 & 2 although, I didn't really get into 3 only becasue it was a decade late and voice actors were different. I might need to give it another chance though...
FalconC45 162 Posted May 5, 2007 Patlabor movies are awesome. I got them both on VHS. I need to get them on DVD. The third movie is different. Its really a police story within the Patlabor Universe. The Patlabor characters themselves had a very minimal role in the third movie. Have you seen the TV series of Patlabor? It reminds of Police Acadmey and Dragnet. The Super Atragon anime sounds like a Starblazers knock off. Falcon
firehawkordy 34 Posted May 14, 2007 I just finished Area 88 last nite. The original release from the '80s. English dubbed by ADV so the voice acting is great. For those who've not heard or seen this one I give a brief overview. A Japanese pilot trainee is basically tricked into joining a middle eastern countries foreign legion as a fighter pilot. To go home he has three choices, complete the three years- pay a One Million dollar penalty- go over the hill. The storey revolves around him trying to earn enough to buy his way out of the contract so he can go home to his girl. Thats all I'm saying, you have to watch the DVD to see how it works out. The animation is all hand drawn, no CGI, with some of the best air combat sequences ever. All the planes are based on real birds, no fantasy/sci-fi/transformers here. Good characters, the clothing is dated and it's the usual big-eye/small mouth style of art. the newest bird shown was the F/A-18. I got my hands on a bootleg VHS of this back in '87 with no subtitles and no English dub but I was still entranced by it. Now after all these years I really know what the hell was being said. The artwork and music did a fair job of conveying the basic story but now ...... One more thing, in the box that this DVD was shipped in came a "bonus"? or a mistake. Some how a disc of the first 6 episodes of Robotech got sent to me also. If this was a bonus ADV has got my repeat business, if it was a mistake, well they've got me ready to complete that series next. Now to get Gunsmith Cats. FalconC45 162 Posted May 15, 2007 I think you have the new Area 88 series. They re released the oringal series as a 6 hour movie (actually there's 2 area 88 movies on that dvd). Falcon
firehawkordy 34 Posted May 15, 2007 No, got the original. 2 discs, same as the VHS I got in the late 80's. I know the one you are thinking of, that's the latest incarnation shown on the Anime Network. I'm turning into a fanboy, got to get a life.
FalconC45 162 Posted May 15, 2007 Ahh OK. Misunderstood your post. So is the re release worth getting? Did they cleaned it up? IE restore the picture quality? Falcon
