HI all

I am trolling for some info and recommendations for filtering software.

I have never used any and on a regular google have discovered that I do not like to read that much

so this is for a family member and his mum and dad will not allow an open unfiltered connection

and caylix is too strick as an ISP

I would set my self as admin and install and password the computer

just incase his curiousity gets the better of him

he needs it for college but not for games or adult content as the PC saying goes

I'd recommend no filter, if he's old enough to go to college, he doesn't need his eyes covered anymore. And a little gaming won't hurt him either.

Both my brother and me(both in college now) never had such restrictions put on us. We're both in absolutely perfect shape.

The best filter's called Education.

Filters are either too strict or puritan (banning museum sites daring to display photos of nude statues), completely useless (either being too lax or too easily circumvened) or at worst an invitation to break it and search for the censored content.

Not that this answers your question but, I have to agree that if he's going to college he's a bit too old to be babysat on the computer. Besides, isn't that what the internet is for, movie tickets and porn?

Anyway, I know someone who uses something called Mindnet (I think that's it's name) and they seem to like it so far.

Shouldn't his grades be the yardstick? If he gets good grades, what does it matter how he spends his time?

Of course, when I met my wife she was 22 and her parents still treated her like she was a teenager with curfews and crap (even though she'd been running her own business for 5 yrs and going to college). Sometimes the parents need a kick to let go.

Well porn and videogames are highly correlated with grades. Now correlation does not mean causation, so it could be either watching porn and playing videogames leads to high grades, or high grades lead to watching porn and playing videogames, or something else causing both

I agree! :good:

How can a parent ever expect a child to develop the self-management skills they need to negotiate this world if they don't give them the opportunity to live their own life? My brother sheltered his daughter WAY too much, and as a result she doesn't know how to do anything, she's always had mom or dad take care of all of her problems.

If you don't give a kid a chance to make mistakes they will never learn.

I always thought that was the idea of college anyway? You've had 18 years to teach them, now they get 4 to figure out how to do things and learn to be themselves without being totally off the leash but still largely autonomous?
