Normally I fly with only 1 other wingman unless I am going on Escort or any other aircombat mission. I figure that this is the best way to prevent needless deaths.

I do the same thing, for the same reason, but also to keep um out of the way. You can also rotate your pilots so the rookies get some airtime

If the mission is short I leave it to the planners.

But if the mission is long range and I've only been given 1 wingman, then I call up a couple of extra guys ( if doing ground assault, they can provide cover).

I do the same, but its because I don't want all my squadron mates flying around in the air while I'm trying to keep my eyes on the bogey. Too many times I've maneuvered onto a plane's tail only to see when I get close enough that its friendly.

I normally have 2 wingmen. But I gotta ask, whats the point of requesting help? I was in a 16 VS 16 F-15 VS Su-27 fight with all wingmen dead. When I called for help they said no. I made it though cuz the Su-27's were out of missiles. Poor rookies.

Ive only requested help in desperation that help will be sent - even though I know its not implemented in the game!!

Well it seemed desperate to me I mean 1 F-15 w/o missiles and low on gun VS 10 Su-27s w/o missiles and unknown gun isnt very fair...
