I had a set of "Charlie Brown's Encyclopedia" when I was a kid. My favorite volume was the one on space and space travel, and one of the facts given was that Laika was the first dog in space, shot up there by the Soviets. Being young and naieve I just assumed that Laika came back alive. I was later distressed to learn otherwise.

This is one of the many crazy past times of the Soviets back then, they'll test anything and everything to prove their point.
