sparkomatic 7 Posted April 4, 2008 Good question, but please remember that ejection seat does NOT mean automatic force field of deliverance from danger...it improves one's chances of survival it in no way guarantees it. Even the vaunted M-B zero-zero doesnt equate home for dinner, unfortunately. You know, speaking of, I remember reading the advances that the USSR made in ejection seat technology...especially at high speed or in difficult AOA...thought it was propaganda but the now very famous Air Show incident(s) proves to some extent their successes. B-1 have ejection seats?

They did make very good seats which got everyone's attention. I've heard our latest models have caught up, don't know that for sure.
GASCAN39 7 Posted April 5, 2008 Hopefully, just a case of hot brakes. It sounded on AFN as they egressed after landing. Hot brakes will catch fire if severe enough, plenty of F-18s at Al Asad doing that the last few years. A crash truck can douse that with a roof or bumper turret though. If it was internal, a hand line would have to be stretched, crash crew would have to enter with all that gear, and try to find the area of origin...... SkyStrike 15 Posted April 7, 2008 As much as I hate to say it: THe USAF's apparently jinxed!!!!!!! Almost like some sort of black magic or sorcery!!!!!!!!!!!!
GASCAN39 7 Posted April 7, 2008 Dunno if I would say jinxed; all of our military aircraft are being flown to the limit in two different theaters. Would have to look at the number of sorties/hours flown in the last five years of all fixed wing and rotary wing then compare to mishaps/losses. I know the OH-58s are hitting the benchmark to undergo phase maint. in half the time they normally do in peacetime. BONES are loitering over the battlespace for multiple hours, then flying back to their forward base.
