Guest pfunkmusik Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 (edited) Now that all versions have 'Unlimited' graphics settings, I figure I'm going to have to go to a 64-bit OS and 4GB of DDR. Which one should I choose for the WOX series? XP64 or Vista64? Please, best advice soonest. I need to order a new mobo as mine is dying (down to one working USB port) and I was going to order more memory and a 64-bit OS. pfunk Edited September 23, 2008 by pfunkmusik Quote

Guest pfunkmusik Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 So which? I'm ordering tonight because I can't take the flaky motherboard performance. It would seem that finding XP64 drivers would be a humunguous pain in the ass, wouldn't it? pfunk Quote

GreyCap Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Isn't 64-bit all hype and not really useful? Besides, the best for games is still Windows XP. Quote

I do like it, but I will be switching back to Vista for one major reason: Apple does not support XP64 with iTunes. There is a way to hack the Vista-64 version to run on XP64, but it is a pain to have to do it every time a new version of iTunes is released. The only product for which I have not been able to find a driver was a wireless LAN card I was going to use to reduce the amount of cables behind my desk. Everything else has worked fine and I've had no incompatabilities with games. XP64 is actually Windows 2003 Server stripped of its server components with the XP interface, so that should tell you a lot about it. That said, if you have a very powerful system with at least 4 GB of RAM and a multi-core processor, Vista runs fine, so I'll be going back to it now that the SF games no longer require disabling shaders. PS - I have an HP machine at work that cost about $1000 at Best Buy. It has a quad core processor, 6 GB of RAM and a GeFore 9500 with Vista Ultimate 64-bit. While I haven't really played the games on it for obvious reasons, I did load up WOI and it seems to run it really well on it. Vista runs great on it. If you aren't looking to build your own, something like that would be great. Quote
+Dave Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 I am running Vista Premium 32 bit, no problems for me as far as the SF series goes. Quote

On a 32-bit OS you can only address 4 GB of memory, and due to some arcane things about the x86 architecture you can only address 3.5 GB in practice. If you want to run with more than 3.5 GB of RAM, for whatever reason, you need a 64-bit OS. Quote

I've read about too many problems with Vista and older games. Quote
+X RAY Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 only thing that can make me change xp will be (maybe) windows 7,xp 32 sp2 works fine,!So a good machine with a good cpu&gpu and 3-4 gb of ram is a better way to go!And this race for the latest patch maybe have different point of views,I don't like it prefer better the oldest one!If you like intercept and drop bombs is not your fav,if you don't like taxying on runways or shoot a satellites, stick with oldest! Anyway everything is for free! So abaout YAP users,YAP 2 probably will not use this patch!!!!! Quote

Except that the OP clearly stated he wants to use 4Gb of RAm, so a 64-bit OS is required. Quote
