TaillyHo 2 Posted February 18, 2011 Damn, TaillyHo - it always hurts to see the Albatros falling. But I've done the same on my side of the line today. You have me mistaken for someone else, mien Herr! It is brother Tranquilo - riding his trusty S.E5 - who has vanquished the Albatros so graphically. Doing most of my entente flying in midsummer 1916, I am yet to have the pleasure of their acquaintance.
TaillyHo 2 Posted February 18, 2011 I started an RNAS 3 1916 Campaign for a change and I like this little plane very much! In my very first mission I got 3 Alb. D.II, the last one just by positioning myself right for my observer to finish him off, as I have expended my ammo on the other two! (Poor Alby!!! ) Unfortunately I had been lost in the clouds and was alone...no witnesses. I submitted the claims anyway, even if they are going to be rejected...It was great fun! I know now why TaillyHo is in love with this plane... Ssshhh elephant, it's one of the best kept secrets in OFF! Yes, as you say, the observer can be very handy at 'cleaning up' if you run out of ammo - especially if you've already inflicted some damage to your opponent(s). It takes some slightly risky positioning of the Strutter at times, but he is an excellent shot (and very economical too). Ah the Strutter! I am gradually getting to grips with the Pup for my RNAS-3 pilot, but he still has a soft spot for the 2-seater Sopwith.
Olham 164 Posted February 18, 2011 Damn, you're right - I made that S.E.5 skin for Tranquillo. I tend to get names mixed up, when they have the same first letter, and when more letters are the same.

Yes, same first and last letter - I'm sure they'd start sounding very similar after a few pints in the mess!

Olham 164 Posted February 20, 2011 Searching through the Jasta I hadn't been flying with so far, I came across Jasta 24. After another complete re-install some days ago, I had only one pilot so far, flying in 1916 with Jasta 2. Now I wanted to have one pilot - in 1918 - in fine weather (May - October) - as far south-west as possible Jasta 24 was at Ercheu in May 1918, so they fitted well. They are a Saxonian Staffel in those days. I had no Saxonian skin yet, cause I never liked the combination of green and white very much, but I made me one. The idea was this: my good Werkmeister Johannes and I were thinking about how to "dress" the new "Lady Albatros". I wanted a brown varnish like Udet once had, but Johannes only found half a tin can with that stuff - not enough for the whole fuselage. But he had an idea. "What about longitudinal stripes varnished brown, on a background of the bright plywood?" he asked. Said and done. When it was ready, Fw. Schilling, our Staffel artist, painted the Saxonian arms on the sides, and a big white "K" to identify me - Karl Alfred von Keltsch. Fw. Johannes finished all with clear dope. Now, what do you say - isn't she beautiful?
Herr Prop-Wasche 7 Posted February 20, 2011 She is indeed a beauty! Looks to be of museum quality, tho. Be careful that Widowmaker does not come by to scuff it up a bit!
Olham 164 Posted February 20, 2011 Hahaha! To do that, he would have to get close enough. But from which direction ever my opponents come - they have to approach me looking into the barrels of my guns. Twin 08/15 LMG "Spandau". And I am quite good at shooting. Mmuahahahahahahahaaaa!!!! The soft tone stripes have really got me now - I have also created an Albatros D.III skin for Jasta 5 with them. Just had one of those Werner-Voss-type of fights in it (a bad sign - such pilots never survive the war). I shot down the RFC-1 Nieuport 17 Lewis of Louis F Jenkin, Tom Falcon Hazell and William C Campbell in it. In a single sortie - and brought 200 rounds back! (Well, those Nupes are quite fragile - Mmuahahahahahahaaa!!!)
RAF_Louvert 101 Posted February 21, 2011 . So pretty. No doubt that second one you have there Olham is a very harmonious bird to fly. .
Olham 164 Posted February 21, 2011 As the pilot is Juergen Harms, the bird is indeed "Harmonius".
Olham 164 Posted February 21, 2011 (edited) Some of my busiest dogfights I had with Jasta 5 - damn, it is sometimes so crowded, you could walk over the wings and strangle your opponents! Well, almost... Here is some of last flight's action. First, Richard Flashar's 1. Kette ran into a swarm of Triplanes. That took place some 1.000 feet above my flight, and we could not get there fast enough. I was lucky though and shot down one Tripe which had come down to see, who we are. After that intense fighting, I tried to lead my Kette back to Boistrancourt airfield, when we got chased by 10 -12 British Nieuport 17 Lewis. I could shoot one craft down before my ammo was out. After that, I managed to guide my wingmen good enough, to make them shoot down another three Nupes. Phew - that was a straining sortie! Olham 164 Posted February 23, 2011 This balloon attack went bad - hospitalised & POW Damn! This was the first balloon attack I didn't get right! Approaching the spotter, I must have been flying too straight for too long - zapp! rattle!!rattle!!! The engine was hit and sounded like a cement mixer with stone in it. I realised my craft was pulling a trail of smoke - and this god damn balloon was much further behind the lines than usual. The engine quit completely, and I had to put the craft down where I was. Captured!
Olham 164 Posted February 25, 2011 Never getting far with Jasta5 It's funny, but each time I create a pilot in Jasta 5, he doesn't get far. Although there are other Jastas in "hotter" zones, like Jasta 2, 10 or 11, they survive longer. With Jasta 5 in summer 1917, I always get into loads of trouble. Have I just managed to survive one good fight, and want to return home, there are swarms of Nupes and Pups, and maybe even Tripes in my way - damn, it's hard! If you like furballs - go to Jasta 5 in June 1917. You'll never be alone!
tranquillo 10 Posted February 25, 2011 Very nice skin and screenies, Olham. Don't worry about being a POW - I'll see you're OK .

TaillyHo 2 Posted March 2, 2011 Getting a new campaign up and running in the Bristol Scout - in the hope that TrackIR might help this bird's unique 'angle of attack!! Fingers-crossed my pilot will last long enough to justify a 'report from the front' soon, but for now, this is his career highlight ... never mind the hun in the sun, beware the 'cock-eyed' Lewis!! . Olham 164 Posted March 2, 2011 Thanks, rwmarth! Wow, TaillyHo! - to see the Bristol Scout in a successful combat - how long have I waited for this!

Olham 164 Posted March 6, 2011 Had to let some steam off today. This Strutter crew was my first victim. I had just shot them down, when I noticed a single Nieuport 17 sneaking up on me. He didn't get very far and was victory #2. Then I changed to Leutnant von Keltsch, the Saxonian nobleman, to fly the D.Va. We had to escort 4 D.F.W. C.V, and they were going so high, that the Albatros' engine performed like a soap-bubble-bath again (I hope, the D.V and D.Va will get changed for P4 - they appear weaker sometimes than the D.II). At the front, we got received by some 10 or 12 SPAD XIII. Too much at this altitude. I managed to shoot the wing off of one, before his mad wingman pierced my kite. But here, the wingmen commands came in handy - I pressed "Help", and also marked the SPAD and pressed "Attack", and he got shot to pieces before he knew he had hit my craft. I sailed behind our lines, guarded by my men, and put the kite down near a road, without any problems.
TaillyHo 2 Posted March 7, 2011 Plenty of action there, Olham - tho you were fortunate not to lose your top wing judging by the pepper marks shown from below in the bottom pic! Whan you say you "marked the SPAD", is that simply Tab-ing through until his craft goes from a red to a yellow square on the TAC? = or do you also have to 'padlock' his SPAD before hitting 'A' ? I have only limited success trying to 'command' my wingmen.
Olham 164 Posted March 7, 2011 (edited) Yep, Leutnant von Keltsch was very lucky - he received a full burst from the twin guns of a SPAD XIII. Could have been his end. Even the wheel covers were sieved. Yes, when I say, I marked it, I did it this way. - pop the TAC up - go through the enemy craft with "next target", until the one is chosen - then I press "A" (attack) If I only have my personal wingman near, or if under too much stress escaping, I often only press "H" (Help!) In good or elite Staffeln, that helps a lot - the enemy is as good as dead. And often very quick! Edited March 7, 2011 by Olham
TaillyHo 2 Posted March 7, 2011 Thanks, Olham - sounds easy enough!
Olham 164 Posted March 9, 2011 (edited) It was raining Pups, when we were about to take off from Boistrancourt today. I shot a wing off this one, but his wingman was very angry about that and hit my craft so, that I had to put it down again. Try to top that: flying time - 2 minutes; one kill!
