Siggi 10 Posted March 24, 2009 Balloon defence mission. Passed loads of bogeys, but stuck to the path. Reached the balloon, bogeys behind. Turned back on the patrol-leg and one turned red. TAC off and in we went. Got there and there were a bunch of silver Nupes mixing it up on the deck with unidentified friendlies. Got into turning with a couple of them, but they were inside my turns all the time. Managed to get a few hits on one of them. Then my gun jammed, so I was off out of it at tree-top height. One decided to chase me but I was getting away from him. Then my gun cleared, so I thought "right, you schweine" and turned back. Big mistake. Even though he was having 'issues' with the ground he still engaged me and I couldn't shake him. A few hits later and my motor was sounding like a bag of spanners kicked down the stairs. I managed to get down ok, but it was very close. Never has a sim been so challenging or realistic.

I finally got into an SE5a the other day and had an Albert Ball moment. "Meh" I said. I can see why he thought it was a dud. The N 11 and 17 series are great planes. Fragile, but you definitely feel like you can take on the world! Until you get shot down. Or your wing fails. Or your wingman fails and collides with you. Or the wind kills you. Or your computer crashes. RR

When I have twin spandaus and a sight I'll have a go. Until then I have to use one gun and the pointy bit on the radiator-cap as an aiming-point, which means getting quite close unless it's a 2-seater flying straight and level. catch 81 Posted March 25, 2009 Never has a sim been so challenging or realistic. Damn right Siggi ! I think a lot of interested parties are turning onto this fact now. I'm biased of course as the WW1 air war is my favourite period but this has to be up there with the best serious non-arcade flight sims ever made if not the best ! I just hope sales eventually catch up and give the boys the reward they so richly deserve.
zoomzoom 2 Posted March 25, 2009 Zey dooooo maaaaaake it eaaasy for us, don't zey Olham? Wit ze little ready made bullzzz-eyes already painted all over Zee Vings-n-such ya? ZZ.
RAF_Louvert 101 Posted March 25, 2009 Fell for the old "Bull's eye over the non-critical parts of the airplane" ruse, eh boys? Just keep aiming at those targets then. I'll stick to banging away at your engine and cockpit areas. Cheers! Lou
zoomzoom 2 Posted March 25, 2009 Vooops!......sorry. Fvailed to mention ze lazt Englander I shot down had ze little bullzeye painted on ze back uf hiz flight helmet. Das is gooood ya!? ZZ.
RAF_Louvert 101 Posted March 25, 2009 Zoomzoom, that's actually the third eye we tea-and-crumpet types need in the back of our heads in order to see the likes of you sneaking up on our six. Videmus omnia and all that, although come to think of it that means "we see all", so maybe it is just a bull's eye. I know in my case I certainly don't see all, or even most, which is likely why my old bus serves so well as Fokker fodder for you nasty Boche swine, (and I mean that only in the kindest and most appreciative way possible). Cheers! Lou
Olham 164 Posted March 25, 2009 Hey, ZoomZoom and Lou, could you, perhaps, stop that "battle flirting" and remember, we have a war going on, we should take serious? (Lol!) What do you two fly at the moment? I have 3 carreers with Albatros (D II, D III, D Va), and one just started with a Dr.1. But they are all so new yet, I have only three confirmed kills (on th D II). RAF_Louvert 101 Posted March 26, 2009 Olham, it's not battle flirting, just mutual respect for an adversary, although I do cut quite a swatch in my flying togs. Now, to answer your question Sir, I have one DiD/W campaign currently active flying as Nels Albertson for No. 5 Wing, RNAS. Current date is May 16, 1916 and I have just over 18 hours flying with 3 confirmed kills to my name, and I have been promoted to Flight Commander. My group is stationed up near the channel at the Couderkerque aerodrome and the Huns have been quite busy as of late in their own two-seaters. In fact, that is what I and my gunner/observer, Sgt. Kenny Shewtum, have primarily been engaging since we started flying. Our one run-in with Einies did not end well and we had to crash land near one of our own AA positions. That was a white-knuckle ride to be sure. Cheers! Lou
Interlocutor 0 Posted March 26, 2009 I've been flying Nieuports almost exclusively since patch 1.25. I finally got into an SE5a the other day and had an Albert Ball moment. "Meh" I said. I can see why he thought it was a dud. The N 11 and 17 series are great planes. Fragile, but you definitely feel like you can take on the world! I love the Nupes, too . For the past several weeks I've been flying either N11's with the LafEsc in May 1916, or N17's with the Storks in the summer of 1916. The Nupes are a pilot's dream, turn on a dime and no real vices. AI-flown Eindekkers are no match for them. Rick, have you or anyone else noticed that the N11's wing-top Lewis seems to pack a harder punch than the N17's cowl-mounted Vickers? Has any Nupe pilot tried an RFC/RNAS campaign with the N17b and its wing-mounted Lewis?
zoomzoom 2 Posted March 26, 2009 I have 4 main Pilot careers (and a couple extra fun ones for other nationalities) and they are in AlbatrosDV,Albatros DVa200, HalberstadtDII, and PfalzDIII. I believe they are all DiD but should check the finer details to be sure. I forgot the stats on my oldest pilot, but I've been using him through a number of the patches, so he's the "survivor" of the group so far and in the DVa. I'll have to recheck his stats but I believe he has over 30 hours, and 89 claims with only 42 confirmed (this was before the patches came that fixed the claim game). Unfortunately I don't consider him 100% accurate because I revived him once after, inexplicably, coming out of a warp his AC nosed up severely and for no real reason, trashed the plane and killed him. I've heard others speak of this glitch, but it got him....so I revived him. Ah well, perhaps the others will be more fortunate. ZZ. Oops, I guess I should say DiD-W, cause I do use warp......am going to get around to setting up a campaign to do non-warp and give it a try since Siggi thinks highly of it. I do think I will wait though till I get a bit more RAM for my machine, so there will actually be a bit more scenery to look at when I do that though! Right now its a bit tedious with all sliders set to 1! and no clouds!!
Olham 164 Posted March 26, 2009 Lou, that looks like the almost right clothing for a two-seater to me. (Must have been terribly cold up there at 12.000 - 15.000 feet) Zoomzoom, I have also one pilot resurrected - same glitch, and he was my best man. But I got the game pretty late, and most pilots die early; so I don't have a good kill tally yet. Like you, I will also fly without warping, when I have uprated my rig (hopefully soon).
