I have just installed the latest minipatch (1.30c) and was testing it using Quick Combat.

The conditions set up were

  • Flying for Britain
  • Squadron 3 RFC (as a bomber pilot)
  • Airfield - Chocques
  • Date - 1 Jan 1915 at 10:15
  • Aircraft - Bristol Scout

I started on the ground and the mission was essentially practice flying.

Now to the problem ...

After starting the engine I switched to Chase Mode and then slowly opened the throttle. Gradually the aircraft started to move and my eye was drawn to the wheels. The left hand wheel (port) was rotating backwards !! The right hand wheel (starboard) was rotating forwards.

I do know that you can sometimes get this appearance with a stroboscopic effect but to check on this I slowed the aircraft so that it was just moving.

After a flight of some 30 minutes I landed at a different airfield and checked again. Still the same problem.

Finally I went back to the start of the mission and tried a different aircraft. This time I tried the RAF F.E.2.b. This one worked as expected with both wheels rotating correctly.

My machine is a Dell XPS5 with 4Gb of memory and an ATI Radeon 3870X2 card. Both graphics and system software are up to date.

Is this a small bug ?

Must be. But so long as your plane doesn't go in circles while rolling on the ground you can ignore it, as should the devs.

Yea, best to keep your eyes on your 6 and your map etc. There are lots of little pecularities in games, like wheels that also don't rotate exactly on their certers, along with props, etc.

But good to know about, maybe down the road we can fix it, for now, just pretend like it's an optical illusion?

LOL, his first post and he's picking the tiniest nit in the whole sim!

Actually, the wheels on the Bristol Scout were counter-rotating like the props on the P-38. It was done to reduce torque, so OFF got it right.

Welcome to the boards, Trevor!

:hi:

Well, Trevor, don't let this pilot talk let you get daunted.

And I must say this about your eyes: a man who finds such a little detail (you're the first one who noticed this,

I'm pretty sure), must be a good hunter in the skies above Flanders.

Welcome - as a wingmate; or as an opponent!
