AI is beautiful

Recommended Posts

I’m flying the Albatros DVa in Jasta 17 out of Mars-sous-Bourcq Aerodrome in the Vedun sector, July 1918.

The weather is dark clouds and raining. I love the mood it sets. My flight of 5 is escorting some recce planes to the front. Just as we get to the front we are greeted by a flight of about 6 French SPAD VII’s. I give the order to attack and a melee ensues. I hold back, just above everyone else. I spot a lone SPAD breaking away just on the outskirts of the fight. I dive after him but he does not cooperate. He turns and dives away, but not before I put a burst into him. I try to stay with him but he is too fast and puts some distance between us. Just then another SPAD comes cutting in front of me from right to left about 100 yards away. Breaking left I’m on his tail and fire a few good bursts into him. I follow him down a bit and watch him auger in. I look around and see only 2 SPAD’s below and to the left of me. I’m at about 4,000 feet and they are at about 3,500. My flight is nowhere to be seen. Well, enough of this I’m heading home.

I head east and watch as the 2 SPADS follow me. No problem I think. They are behind and below. I’m safe. Right? They close the gap, gain altitude and start getting closer, and closer. Well crap! I don’t want fight but there is not an aerodrome close and I am not going to give up and put down in a field. I decide to turn and face them head on. I break right and turn but they are too close for me to line up for a shot. We fly past each other. They break right and I break left. Now, this is where the AI impressed me. As I turned into them the wing man continues to bank to the right going under and behind me. The lead aeroplane flies straight ahead and level. I get behind him but he is a little too far for a shot. As I close on him I began to think this is too easy. Where is the other SPAD? I look behind me and sure enough he is just starting to turn on my tail. Then it dawns on me: They set me up! I shake my head and chuckle to myself. Wow, this is beautiful. I break left and engage the other SPAD. I know I must deal with him quickly for the other one will back to deal with me. As we are turning, diving and climbing I manage to get in a few bursts. He starts to wobble and slide to the right. By this time the other SPAD has returned and is about to get on my tail. I break off my attack and concentrate on the other SPAD. Again after more turning, diving and climbing I manage to watch him go down. The other guy must have bought it too because I was alone now.

I flew to the nearest aerodrome and landed. Man what a ride!

Things turned out in my favor this time. I may not be so lucky next flight.

Beware the AI. They are beautiful.

If you look really close, you'll see him, and he is not beautiful.

Great story, I've had similar AI experiences, but couldn't have written them down as well as you did.. thanks!

Great story, this ww1 sim is fantastic. Many times i've come across same situations, every mission flight different, disitions you make with

consequences of life and death for your pilot. i recently lost my british SE5 pilot with 40 confirmed victorys in a mission not shot down by the enemy,..but a wingman collided into me as i turned to engage a DR1. i sat there for a good 10 minutes in disbelieve that it was over for this pilot after coming so far, and not really the way i wanted it to end if death should come calling. i always thought i'd be shot down by the enemy and not by my own side in a collision mistake.

This sim has total drawn me in and i just cant seem to leave it alone. i've now started a new career as a german fighter pilot flying a Fokker D.VII, its a wonderfull plane to fly and i'm racking up the victorys in it fast. Great plane! great sim! well done and many thanks to OFF team as i've not had chance to congratulate them yet!.. to busy flying! :good:
