ShrikeHawk Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 After purchasing WoI and SFG I immediately put my old cloud mod from FE into them. But I thought the grayish lowlights didn't fit well with the bluer skies I see in the modern skies. So, cloud enthusiast that I am, I set about making a new cloud1.tga. Here's the result... Took these shots in SFG. I think this new version blends well with the horizon clouds.
Alexander51 Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 Awesome work. They look quite natural. Yep I agree
FalconC45 Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 I wonder if these cloud tgas can work in widesky mod? Falcon
Aintry Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 I wonder what the clouds would look like with cloudless horizon textures.
ShrikeHawk Posted June 14, 2009 Author Posted June 14, 2009 I think they'll work fine with the widesky mod. I always boost my cloudcount the way widesky does. And I expect they'll look pretty much the same without horizon clouds. I'll have to test that. I wasn't getting quite the same results in WoI so I've been creating a new cloud image for it.
ShrikeHawk Posted June 14, 2009 Author Posted June 14, 2009 Yay! Finally got the result I was looking for in WoI. It took building a whole new image and a lot of cursing, hehe. The object was to create varied looking clouds producing random shapes and depth. Here's the the same cloud used with Widesky.
FalconC45 Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 OK I'm convinced :) Will d/l it when you upload it. Falcon
jomni Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 (edited) Nice cotton candy there. How does it look when a plane passess through the clouds? (I kinda like the clouds in Falcon4 AF. Especially the transition effects.) Edited June 15, 2009 by jomni
ShrikeHawk Posted June 15, 2009 Author Posted June 15, 2009 Thanks guys. The transition is pretty good. Varying levels of all white until you're through. Sometimes you definitely get the tunnel effect. Credit TK for the idea of layering cloud images on top of each other to build complex shapes. The effect this can have is that you think you're passing through a solid wall of cloud when you're actually not and you feel like you're entering a tunnel. Fun! Chasing a mig through is a real thrill too. Still working on this, though it's going in the right direction now.
+ST0RM Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 I like your first screens better. The later ones look like cotton balls. The first shapes varied, while the second version was too symetrical. But the color is better in the second version. Just my opinion though.
ShrikeHawk Posted June 15, 2009 Author Posted June 15, 2009 I agree storm. I'm still "fiddling." I had blue coming through in a lot of the clouds (mask was catching some of the background), so I was fixing that. A little tweak to the vertical component and I think I'll get those random (and tall) shapes back again.

ShrikeHawk Posted June 17, 2009 Author Posted June 17, 2009 Woohoo! Finally got clouds I like in WoI... Scattered Clouds: Broken Clouds: All shots taken from a single position in the paused game (2 missile kills and 2 gun kills after the broken clouds...ahem...feels good.)
+ST0RM Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Well done! Will be anxiously awaiting the chance to install them.
ShrikeHawk Posted June 17, 2009 Author Posted June 17, 2009 Thanks All. The image still needs a little cleanup. There's a vertical line of cloud I'm trying to track down. Once that's removed, I'll upload it.
ShrikeHawk Posted June 28, 2009 Author Posted June 28, 2009 Finally got these clouds finished. Posted the mod just now and it's in review. Here's a screenshot : And also the screenshot from the mod:
