An original letter from Lt. Schulte, Jasta 12

This example is from Lt. Schulte to Lotte Leuteritz, at "Pension Korfu" in Berlin W (West)*

It may be silly, but it touches a sentimental string in me to find such handwritten items.

 

 

*(Pension "Korfu" might have been a brothel - sounds a bit like that to me)

There is nothing silly about sentiments such as this as its a link to the past and that is important to people so no there is nothing silly here.

I see from the postmark that the letter was mailed on 03.03.17. On 12.04, just over a month later, Ltn d R Adolf Schulte was dead, killed in a collision with an FE2d north of Barelle. Lt OT Walton and 2AM JC Walker, the crew of the Fee, were also killed.

Olham, as Slarti said, there is nothing silly about that. Such writings can be very powerful and touch us in ways we can't imagine and in ways the writer never intended. They are a direct personal link to a time past and I don't know how someone couldn't be moved by them. And when we know what came after, as Shredward has illustrated, they become even more poignant.

No silly at all, Olham. Quite normal for me to feel like that. Like Slartibartfast and RAF said these things are a direct link to the past.

I feel the same when looking into an old photograph. With letters and personal objects the feeling is more intense.

My - to imagine, he was killed only a month later (thank you, Shred) -

Lotte Leuteritz may have never seen him again.

"Das Kriegstagebuch der Jasta 12" about his end:

 

"At 10.40 h Lt. Schulte shot down an F.E. near Rumaucourt. Ninth victory.

In this air combat he collided with his opponent and crashed fatally."

 

And additional Text by the author: "In the overall turmoil of this fight between the 18.Sqdn

and Jasta 12, the FE2b (4995) with the crew Lt OT Walton and 2AM JC Walker, and the

Albatros of Lt. Schulte collided. All three aviators died hereby."

 

Maybe I did Lotte Leuteritz and the Pension Korfu wrong.

Out of curiosity I googled the name of the Pension, and it still exists.

And now I could even read the Sütterlin address on the envelope:

 

Rankestrasse 26

 

The Pension Korfu still exists - at the same address.

It is very close to the center of West-Berlin, and near the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Memorial Church.

A miracle almost, that it survived the heavy WW2 bombing right here in the center.

If I knew it contained stuff about Jasta 12, I possibly would.
