Is HITR expansion DL copy protected?

Recommended Posts

I just bought, downloaded and installed HITR (successfully). Like all game patches this size I back them up on a CD - but while the direct downloaded HITR executable runs ok, when I test the CD backup it stalls (burned 2 discs to make sure it wasn't a disk problem) and won't run. Thus my question - is the HITR download copy protected? I'm using W7 x64 default burn software.

Don't know, hope it is though, would maybe discourage some few from trying to rip off the creators of this fantastic sim. And, I wouldn't worry about having backups, I'm quite sure that in the unlikely event that you erased your dl file, if you ever did need to re dl it would be easy to do.

I was provided (3) download attempts through June 3rd only at the time of my purchase. There also was no info in the downlink pertaining to downloading the expansion in the future in the event of a HD crash, etc., nor could I find any such reference in the HITR FAQ, thus my question. No offense intended by any means, and while appreciative of you taking time to reply, offering an opinion leaves me with my question still unanswered. In hindsight I should have PM'd one of the Dev's (and will, now) and posted the results as reference to others.

I backed up my HitR executable to a DVD and reinstalled it later with no problems. I didn't run it from the DVD though, I first copied it to my hard drive and ran it from there.

Well, that answers the copy protection question. And, yes, I did copy the burned file from the CD to my HD but it wouldn't run either. Did you use 3rd party burner software by chance? It could be my problem is the default (built-in) burner software in W7 64 bit I'm running.

EDIT: I just tried copying the burned zip file from the CD to my HD again and it ran this time (?). Prior to posting I was at about a level 8 frustration level so the no-run issue was self induced. Just to be on the safe side I copied the HITR zip file to a thumb drive and it tested OK (started up) even from the thumb drive so I'm good to go. I have met the enemy and he is ME....

Over50: Hope you didn't take my comments the wrong way. My point is that we have a pretty good bunch of team members here, it isn't some big company where you have no one to complain to to go to for a solution. I'm pretty sure that even if you didn't have a back up, if you ever did lose your dl install some how, all you would have to do is contact Pol or someone else on the team and they would get you another one, based on your purchase information, so I don't think you really need to worry about that, OK?

I apologize for the short retort....frustration on my part. As noted, I have me the enemy and it is ME....

No problem, welcome to the forum and we all look forward to see you up and running and hear about your first encounters/impressions. Be sure you get a TrickIR3 or newer, you will hear about this over and over on the forum, it makes a huge difference, especially if you start trying to fly with out the pilot helper indicators. Also be sure to visit and read the FAQ section on the website as well as the many, helpful sticky posts up above.. lots of good info and advice.

Cheers!

Just to mention, I've been registered (forum) since March '09 so I'm no stranger to OFF and the forum FAQ, stickys, etc. But I'm what you'd call a casual flight simmer and not a regular in the sense that you and other folks here are with plus 600 posts. My most recent postings had to do with TrackIR5 which I've had now for about 3 weeks - and still getting used to because of my trifocals and vision correction prescription strength. Off hand I'd say most of my posts have been the result of a problem, asking specific questions, or general comment replies. Again, I'm a casual flight simmer along with first person shooters as my prime PC game preferences. I got hooked on combat flight sims in the DOS days beginning with Aces of the Pacific, then 1942 Pacific Air War, Flying Corps, the Janes series and later the Windows based MS CFS2, the IL2 series, FS2004, FSX up to the present day OFF, Rise of Flight and Wings of Prey. And as noted in my sig I'm well equipped for flight simming with CH Products hardware (joystick, pedals and yoke).

Hi Over50,

Yes you can back the file up. Make sure you backup a working file. If it works from hard drive, but doesn't from the CD maybe it's corrupted on the CD. Try another CD authoring program?

I think it's mentioned in a few places, but there's a section in the FAQ

under this section

1) Hints and Tips

.....

NOTE: if you just bought HAT IN THE RING! Also see point 10) below.

.......

10) If you purchased the HAT IN THE RING! expansion:

Make sure you have Between Heaven and Hell already installed (make sure it works and is updated to V 1.32G) then unzip the Hat in the Ring "OverFlandersFields_HitR.zip" file you downloaded when you purchased. Then run the installer "OverFlandersFields_HitR.exe" to install HITR!.

PLEASE don't forget to make a good backup of the OverFlandersFields_HitR.zip file somewhere safe for future use (on external USB or on a backup DVD) in case you need to reinstall HITR after rebuilding your PC for example. Due to the time involved we cannot re issue downloads if you did not purchase download insurance when you purchases and your initial link has expired.

I'll add it in other places. It also mentions it when you actually purchase that you can get "download insurance".

Thank you for taking time to reply. As I later posted in this thread my problem was "operator error" ..... My bad.... and I have it backed up on my flash drive.
