Windows 7 problems

Recommended Posts

I've read in the past of members using Win 7 and not having any issues. I have searched the forum, but honestly the forum search is not too good. So, in installing the CFS-2, putting the patch in and I am unable to get it to play (for the short time) as we've had to do. Just in case this was not necessary. The only thing I found in the FAQ is about Vista and administrator issues or what you call it?, and changed that. As much as Win 7 is nice, if it is that much problem for OFF and HITR, then one will have to go.. And I can't think of a sim that has been more emjoyable but I just put up with the headaches any longer. If anyone that is using Win 7 know what I might do, or lead me in a direction, I will give it a try. Otherwise its back to FSX and will wait until Phase4. But it would have to be a whole new deal and be compatible with Windows 7 or I won't purchase it. Thanks

I use W7 w/ no issues. So let's see what we can do here. First of all your post was a bit convoluted:

- It states "CFS2" - I assume that was a typo?

- It states "putting the patch in" - which patch - there are many?

Installing OFF is very specific and it depends on whether you have CFS3 on CD (two discs) or on DVD (single patched disk). Here the instructions for both are listed below. So:

- Uninstall

- Search your system for any CS3 related files and delete

- Follow the directions for the appropriate install - firing up the sim and rebooting at each step

If you have older CFS3 CDs, assume that they are version 3.0:

- Install CFS3, and patch it to 3.1 (obtain patch here: http://www.microsoft.../downloads.aspx). Then run the game briefly.

Note: Many newer CFS3 CDs (e.g., bargain version recently offered by Best Buy) are already 3.1. If you own one of these, you DO NOT have to install CFS3 first, but need to have the CDs ready when you install BHAH.

- Install BHaH from DVD. Insert CFS3 CDs when asked (if using CFS3 v3.1)

- Download and install BHaH SuperPatch v1.32, followed by MiniPatch v1.32g (found here: http://www.overfland...wnloadsBH&H.htm)

- Download and install HiTR

- Download and install HiTR MiniPatch v1.47 (available here: http://www.overfland...m/Downloads.htm)

If you have the CFS3 DVD:

- Install CFS3. Then run the game briefly.

- Install BHaH from DVD

- Download and install BHaH SuperPatch v1.32, followed by MiniPatch v1.32g

- Download and install HiTR

- Download and install HiTR MiniPatch v1.47

Good luck. :salute:

Thanks, I did mean CFS3, and have done as requited. I have been with OFF since it's beginning and on older computer, installed many times. Now I have a new computer with Win 7. If you ask me what I have I can only tell anyone it is an HP Elite 180. I can't go in to the technical area because usally I don't know what he h--- i am talking about. . Withof course a clean install...the computer was new and had never seen any of this earlier- I could not play CFS3- briefly. I've done all the patches in the past, had saved them to an external hard drive so I had that taken care of. It is the inital bs with CFS3 that I cannot get past. Everything you have said I had done. Without any mistake. So where I am at? I appreciate your help but even though I don't know much about computers; I do know about installation, moving files (being a FS9, FSX member for many years and etc)....

OK - when does the process break down - which step? Be specific in terms of symptom - error message.

Don't worry - we will get through this.

Sorry for being vague. When I try and briefly run CFS3, it doesn't run at all. The screen comes up for about a split second and does not allow me to hit "play" or run game or whatever it was when I had done it old computer. Thanks

Have you set cfs3.exe to run as administrator?

http://www.sim-outho...ead.php?t=25661

Will be giving this another try. I had made some changes to run as administrator but believe I made some mistakes. These instructions are written so that even I can understand them., Thanks

I had my fingers crossed and had hoped this would work. I went back and did a clean install, even used CC cleaner ..re installed. Both times when I tried to run the game, I double click on the CFS3Win 7 remade shortcut and the game "picture" that would allow me to fly it briefly-pops up but disappears in a split second..just like it did before. I get to the point that it isn't worth the effort. I have probably spent 5 hours trying to get this going. After a year or more of enjoyment of OFF and then some months of HITR on my old XP system, I doubt I have the patience to continue. Unless someone else has suggestions, it looks like I will go try out that darn arcadish style Wings of Prey and enjoy looking at he scenery and also back to FSX. SO I may not be back except to check on Phase 4. Hopefully it will be ready for Win7

Hmmm...wish I could help you here. This is odd. Just spitballing here but...:

- Do you have other sims installed (FSX?) and they run fine?

- What version of Direct X do you have?

- Go to Start and type in DXDIAG in the text box. Allow it to FULLY load. Go to print report or whatever it states and give us the main and video sections.

Like Barkhorn1x suggests you should download the latest DirectX and install it by running this file.

If this don't work you can run DXDIAG like Barkhorn1x told you.

Ras, don't give up yet.

Do you have the latest ATI drivers installed? Version 10.4 is the latest and works good for me.

I am now using W7 64 fulltime and have no problems. The only problems I was having were related to my g940 HOTAS but after the latest driver update, everything is honkey dory.

Have you installed that file I told you?

Yes, i did thanks. Gave it a try two times actually.

You shouldn't need to but try running CFS3 in XP mode. Worth a try.dntknw.gif

Don't have XP any longer. Have Win 7 Home Edition on new computer

What tranquilo suggests is that in the same tab where you defined to Run as Administrator in the cfs3.exe file, there is also the possibility to run in compatibility mode Windows XP (SP3).

What Tranqillo meant was to right click on the shortcut - go to Properties and select Compatibilty mode - then check off XP Service pack 3. I don't think it will matter really to the issue you are having.

So:

1. Have you tried installing any other sim/game and do they work? I ask this as the issue may be vid card related.

2. Please do try the 10.4 drivers - I use them and they work well.

3. Please get that print out of the DXDIAG results and copy over the Main section and graphics sections into a message here. If there is something blatantly wrong this may tell us what it is.

Everything else is working fine, such as FSX and another flight sim (not to be named) so I have always went with, "leave well enough alone"...I feel that it is just something simple that I have been doing to make a relative easy mistake. But, having said that, because of issues with my old computer in the last 9 months of its life, I probably installed OFF/HITR and all of its patches about 4 or 5 times, to the point I could do it with one eye closed. But that was with XP and as I said, patience is only so long, then I will have to turn to another program. Gawd, how I hate to give up OFF, but I will. Headaches aren't worth an hour of enjjoyment here and there

Just very odd that your failure occurs at the CFS3 step.

Go ahead and try compatibility mode and do post the DXDIAG results.

Well, first of all I would recommend updating your drivers as your 8.7s are very old and I wonder how well they work w/ DX11.

I am not stating that this is neccesarilly the cause as a game failing to initialize usually means something more immediate like a corrupted executable or bad dlls. But it is something to look at IMO.

They are not Catalyst 8.7. Drivers version is different from Catalsyt version. I think driver version 8.7 correspond to 10.2 or 10.3 Catalyst.

Otherwise if it was Catalyst 8.7 it wouldn't work at all, like you notice, Barkhorn.

This doesn't mean that you shouldn't download and try the the last version.

Something is very odd here.

Hey Ras,

Sorry to see you having problems. I'm running W7-64_Ult and it is better than XP_32/64 IMO. How, or what procedures did you use to uninstall and clean besides CC? Did you remove entry from Documents and also from Users/Roaming? These two areas are "normally" missed by most uninstallers/cleaners. You shouldn't have to run regedit since those entries will be properly overwritten.

You will also need Directx 9.0C Redistributable; there's a .dll file that's not installed with Dx10/11 that CFS3 looks for.

You don't need to rename the shortcut, just run compatibility XP SP3 and as Admin., but you must do a clean install, as you already know.

I'll be circling.
