Duce Lewis 3 Posted June 21, 2010 I haven't really flown an Se5 since early in P2 Took her up on a whim and it was like meeting an old friend It sure was nice to have her speed On the 1st mission 3 Pfalz's passed high to Port, intending to fly by We just put the spurs to her and ran them down, shooting all 3 down w/o loss Next scrap w/ Alb DIII's didn't go so well as I somehow lost my top wing (see screenshot thread) Great visibility, a nice sight, and good manueverability I think I'll keep flying her for a while
Olham 164 Posted June 21, 2010 That's a good choice on Crumpet side, Duce! Coming from the (inline engine) Albatros, the Scout Experimental is the British craft I feel most related to. I fly her in occasional campaigns (until I'm shot down). Though the overall view is better in the German craft, she is in some ways better than the Albatros. Much (!) faster, better climb, and maybe a bit more agile. And I'd say she is as sturdy and reliable. I leave the Camel with her bad view for the acrobats - the S.E.5a is my British later war single seat fighter of choice. Enjoy flying her, and stay aloft, Duce! Hasse Wind 46 Posted June 21, 2010 If I had to choose the best British single-seater fighter of the war, the choice would always be the SE5. An excellent fighter plane. That powerful engine is really handy, because it makes it a lot easier to dominate situations and escape from tough places. The Albs lack that kind of speed. But if speed is the most important factor, then nothing beats the SPAD S.XIII.
zoomzoom 2 Posted June 21, 2010 Or the Viper, thats a fine machine as well. ZZ.
Duce Lewis 3 Posted June 21, 2010 Yes, flying inline DVII's it's quite easy to slip into the Se5 And I was flying the Viper version Zoomzoom (74 Sqdrn) The Hispo has that big headrest and Aldis sight that complicates her I'm sure many of those were removed in field One thing that puzzles me is her 4 ailerons (like Camel) She's reputed to have poor roll performance but with 4 flippers you'd think she'd snap round easily
Hasse Wind 46 Posted June 22, 2010 The Aldis sight apparently can't be modeled correctly in OFF (thanks to CFS3), so it's not very useful currently. But maybe things will be different in P4? Would be nice to have realistic sights in every plane, if at all possible.

Bullethead 12 Posted June 23, 2010 Yes, flying inline DVII's it's quite easy to slip into the Se5 They are very similar. When I fly D.VIIs, I enjoy fighting SE5s the most because while the planes do have significant differences in some areas, they're so close in most others that it's all about pilot skill and instictive ACM. One thing that puzzles me is her 4 ailerons (like Camel)She's reputed to have poor roll performance but with 4 flippers you'd think she'd snap round easily The SE5 has a huge amount of dihedral, the whole purpose of which is to keep the airplane level. Thus, you need a lot of aileron to overcome the massive inherent stability.

I think a lot depends on the AI skill level in the Se5 If he's an Ace, you're in for a wild fight in the vertical Rookie and he'll use his speed to fly wide climbing circles forcing med to long range shots Camels are a challenge too They lack the speed to run so it's a close quarters rumble I had my 1st scrap w/ Razors tonight Man they can zoom and turn ...and stop on a dime! Overshoot was a constant threat But I managed to bag 4 The SE5 has a huge amount of dihedral, the whole purpose of which is to keep the airplane level. Thus, you need a lot of aileron to overcome the massive inherent stability. That makes a lot of sense They say every great fighter must be unstable in at least 1 axis
Von Paulus 8 Posted June 24, 2010 They say every great fighter must be unstable in at least 1 axis Who is they? Are they referring also to WWII fighters?
Duce Lewis 3 Posted June 24, 2010 Who is they? Are they referring also to WWII fighters? I can't remeber where I heard it originally But it makes sense Stability is the opposite of manueverability Camel and Se5 exibit this comaprison pretty well Se seems to have been designed for beginners, speed and a stable gun platform Even with 4 ailerons her roll rate wasn't that great I think Bullet is right, her dihedral added stability at the expense of roll rate Camel on tbe other hand is so unstable she'll jump into turns seemingly on her own In the hands of an expert she was deadly and in the hands of a noice ...deadly to him
