Help with AC-130A loadout

Recommended Posts

Does anybody knows how to:

1. rotate howitzer gun to fire sideways

2. create useful gunsight for left side view

Otherwise the bird is flying nicely.

Hahaha, Pasko, its certainly a surprise.

As to rotating the gunsight... I think you're gonna have to learn how to make cockpits, and manually design a nice left sight.

great job..but wasn't "Puff" a DC-3?

Puff started as a DC-3, then they went to the C-130 aka AC-130 Specter. Due to the greater lift weight, they could carry heavier weapons and more ammo. Also, has better night vision equipment.

My dad worked on these at Ubon AB, Thailand during the great war. Um, oops, the police action. :)

Hope you can get it working as it will allow us to slay many baddies.

DC WAS THE CIVILIAN VERSION THE REAL "PUFF" WAS AN AC-47"CONNEY BIRD/DACOTA.

THE AIMING WAS DONE BY THE SIDE GUNNER WHO DIRECTED THE WANTED MOVEMENT TO THE PILOT LISTEN TO THE COMMANDS IN THE PRIO POSTING OF A AC-130 GUN RUN.

The AC-130 wasent untill much later

The AC-130H's call sign is "Spectre." The AC-130U's call sign is "Spooky," and traces its history to the first operational gunship, the AC-47. The U-model is the third generation of C-130 gunships.

The AC-130 gunship has a combat history dating to Vietnam. Gunships destroyed more than 10,000 trucks and were credited with many life-saving close air support missions. During Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada in 1983, AC-130s suppressed enemy air defense systems and attacked ground forces enabling the successful assault of the Point Salines Airfield via airdrop and air land of friendly forces. The AC-130 aircrew earned the Lt. Gen. William H. Tunner Award for the mission.

Twenty-eight C-130s were converted to side-firing gunships, primarily for night attacks against ground targets. The AC-130A on display was modified at Wright-Patterson AFB by the Aircraft Modification Division of the 4950th Test Wing as the prototype for the gunship version and was initially equipped with four 20mm and four 7.62 multi-barrel guns, a searchlight, and target sensors. After testing in Southeast Asia in 1967, it was used as a test bed for additional armament, sensor, and fire control development. Later AC-130 gunships mounted improved sensors, a digital fire control computer, and heavier armament.

From 1964 to 1969, the AC-47s successfully defended 3,926 hamlets, outposts or forts. They fired over 97 million rounds and killed over 5,300 enemy soldiers. No outpost or village under gunship protection was ever lost to the enemy. Typical was the defense of the embattled DUC LAP compound in Quang Duc Province. Major Daniel Rehn, pilot of Spooky 41, observed:

Upon witnessing the wrath that the AC-47 brought down on the VC attackers that night, he reported that visual effect of the tracers, 1 in every 5 rounds or 20 per second, gave the appearance of dragon's breath. He also tied the roar of the guns into the description. Upon reading the account in the Stars and Stripes, the CO of the 1st Commando Squadron exclaimed "Well, I'll be damned! Puff, the Magic Dragon." from a child's song recently popularized in the U.S. by the trio Peter, Paul and Mary. Captured VC documents later told of orders not to attack the Dragon as weapons are useless and it will only infuriate the monster.

The Puff carried 21,000 rounds and three 7.62mm mini-guns with a fast (6,000 rounds per minute) or slow (3,000 rounds per minute) rate of fire, with 7 crewmembers (2 pilots, 1 navigator, 2 gunners, 1 load master and 1 flight engineer), it operated typically at 3,000 ft., 130 knots airspeed, without armor or escorts and carried 24 to 56 flares, manually thrown out the door.

Later gunships included the Spectre (AC-130), Shadow (AC-119G) and Stinger (AC-119K) with increases in airspeed, armor, altitudes, and computer aided guns. The 57 AC-47s stripped away the enemy's advantage of picking out friendly positions to strike and overrun at night.

Medal of Honor Spooky

On 24 February 1969, Spooky 71 was hit by enemy mortar fire while defending Long Binh. Airman First Class John L. Levitow severely injured with shrapnel, saved the aircraft and crew by throwing an ignited flare through the open cargo door. For this action he received the Medal of Honor.

Ryder,

I edited data and loadout ini files. You can use either fixed guns or gun pods. Still trying to find out to get them sticking out nicely.

If someone figures out way to attach couple of radomes and gun barrels on the side, pls. let me know. Targeting is still tricky, but it was the same in USNF97, if I remember correctly. And maybe to have AI gunner too.

Thanks that did it. First try anti ship, two kills. Don't think I'll ever get the hang of flying while looking to the left. Will eagerly await AI gunner. :D

Now a new problem, and a thought. First How do you fire the secondary weapon on this thing? How bout this: instead of AI gunner, AI pilot that at a set distance will pick up a orbital pattern to the left while the player is gunner giving elevation corrections via up and down keys with num keys to measure the feet movement up or down in relation to the angle of the left wing. Guess I should have paid more attention in comp lit classes with those damn Apple IIes!???! Then maybe I could figure this one out.

Unfortunatelly I do not have knowledge or information source how to

do that changes. FOr now it is more important to have patch out, and than to see how far can we push with this type.

For firing weapons, from README.TXT file:

To engage target, select ground target (E), switch to left side view (F2) start firing as target approach middle of the screen.

Fire primary (3 x 20mm Vulcan)

Fire secondary (2 x 40 Boffors, in game 2 x 57 mm)

(By default key for fire_secondary on your kbd/joystick is not mapped, it can be edited in /controls/default.ini file )
