DukeIronHand 8 Posted January 27, 2011 For the devs, or any one else in the know. I was kicking around, the next time I am snowed in, downloading a whole lot of the add-on skins (a whole lot!) with the idea of permanently saving them on a CD for my use. As this little project will be time intensive I wanted to ask if the next iteration of OFF (P4) will use the same skin format and will the current skins be compatible? There is much beauty in the skins section here!
UK_Widowmaker 571 Posted January 27, 2011 I'm pretty sure it will be the same DDS format. Can't see how they could /Would want to, change from that format
Olham 164 Posted January 27, 2011 From the P4 screenshots, I saw that they have changed/improved the skins, but I also assume like WM, that the file format and total size will remain. And: you will possible fly P3 for the most of 2011 anyway - I don't think, P4 will come early.
DukeIronHand 8 Posted January 28, 2011 I figured the DDS format would stay the same. Size may change but that is not always a problem. My thought was the model format for the plane objects - if they change that (I think) then the old skins would not work? I have to admit I am not overly familiar with the OFF/CFS3 files system but it is "roughly" similar to CFS2 which I remember from the past.
Olham 164 Posted January 28, 2011 Duke, to save you time and effort, you could decide on three or four pilots you want to create and fly. According to their nationality, plane types and squadrons, you could now download only those skins?
sandbagger 1 Posted January 29, 2011 (edited) The format remains as DDS and the skin templates remain at 2048 x 2048 pixels. So basically nothing has changed. New models will not be a problem as no skins will have been released yet. However, if an existing OBD model is updated, then there is a chance that the DEVS would need to revist all skins for that aircraft, in order to re-align certain areas that may have been altered. In that case any skins for that aircraft, created outside of OBD, would also need the same re-alignments. As yet I don't believe any of the existing aircraft models have been changed externally to any great degree - the team are to busy creating new stuff Edited January 29, 2011 by sandbagger

Redoing all the stock skins for a model change would be, I think, a massive undertaking! I think I can d/l fairly confidently.
shredward 12 Posted January 29, 2011 (edited) except for the DrI. Cheers, the shredder of DrIs ps, some of the stock skins for certain models are all being redone Edited January 29, 2011 by shredward

Makai 1 Posted February 2, 2011 Like the Shredder says the DR1 model has changed. It is much improved and I have been redoing all the DR1 skins I made for Phase3. A big job but it is nearly complete and I think the new ones look a lot better. So far no other skin models have been changed but new improved skins are being made on all fronts. DukeIronHand 8 Posted February 3, 2011 (edited) Thanks again gentleman, for all the information. It is quite refreshing to get a straight (and coherent) answer from the developers of any sim...but of course the OFF Team has always been a cut above the pack in any case! Keep up the great work on a great sim! S! Edit: Double post Edited February 3, 2011 by DukeIronHand
