Smaller TAC - softer Label colours

Recommended Posts

I have changed the TAC size and the Label colours, which I always found too much of a sting in the eye.

I did not only change the colours, but also made them slightly transparent. They will be harder to see,

so they can be used as one step on the way to flying without Labels at all.

If you like what you see below, you may want to try it out. Attached here is my variant of the ViewUI.xml file,

which goes into this folder:

(Computer name) > AppData > Roaming > Microsoft > CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields

You should WinZip your original file right there, to save it.

PS: does anyone know, where to change the red writing in the TAC screen?

Nicely done, Olham,

Think I'll give it a whirl....just for the smaller TAC size, of course....*cough*. Thanks for sharing...

On a completely different note, I couldn't help but notice that Spad is missing 3/4 of it's wings...........................................you BASTARD!! :yikes:

Cheers Mate,

Mmuahahahahahaaaaa!!!!!

Indeed, that SPAD VII is going down. But at that time, I did not have any ammo left.

My wingmen Hantelmann and Dietzel brought it down.

This was a terrible day for RFC - we eliminated at least 4 of their SPAD VII.

I had fought a long fight against an ace - the name was something with Edmond or so in the middle,

but I was so concentrated, that I forgot to pause and read it .

When my ammo was out, I managed to guide my wingmen to two more victories.

They can be useful!

Thanks Olham.

Despite my continued desire not to "cheat" and fly like a "real man" without the TAC screen I find that after a few moments I always bring it up anyway. Oh well.

And, as long as I am making confessions I sometimes use brackets too!

To keep my man-card intact I blame it on my monitor...

No problem, Duke - I often do the same. The eyes, you know?

I have always one pilot, who I only fly with, when I want to do it fully realistc, without any aids.

But it is very straining, and I can only do that, when I have a lot of time and peace at hand.

Then there are the other moments, when I just want to have some fighting.

If you really want to try it the hard way, I recommend to fly a German Jasta.

Pick one that is "Elite", like Jasta 2 or 11, and you will have good wingmen.

The Germans hardly ever cross the lines.

That has two advantages:

- you will not be a POW, when you have to put your damaged crate down

- you will have Flak warnings and guidance

The latter is extremely helpful. Once you see the black puffs, you can pause, and use the zooming in

like a field glass. Make sure your opponents are at disadvantage, before you attack,

or fly away, if that can't be achieved. It is great fun to fly full realistic (I even use paper maps then).

But also quite tiring.

Jasta 11 is the German squadron I always fly with.

Their is so much history and documentation on this unit that I have read over the years that I feel like they are "old pals" when I fly with them.

Really adds to the experience!

Yes, it does. I will have to catch up with you. Right now I'm still digging through the English book

"The Red Baron" by Peter Kilduff.

But I'm not so very much the Richthofen fan - at least not yet, but there is still about half the book to read..

I will next try to find stuff about Jasta 2 or Jasta 5.

Guest British_eh

Hi there,

Thanks Olham for the tech stuff. As you know the SIA - RSS guides recommend the use of TAC and Labels. Perhaps it would be a good idea to stipulate a smaller TAC. However, we do recommend that the TAC be set to 1 NM only. The question of Label in combat vs just to id would be a lively and good discussion.

Thanks for the picture.

Cheers,

British_eh

Olham, is this considered to be one of the better (English) books on MVR? What do you think of it?

I saw a copy in a second-hand bookshop today, so I know where I could get one very quickly!

British_eh, I made the whole TAC size smaller in diameter.

You can of course set it to 1 NM easily by pressing Ctrl * Shift + T.

TaillyHo, I'm not an expert on WW1 aviation, but from what I heard and read,

Kilduff's "The Red Baron" must be one of THE books to read, when you want to

study Manfred von Richthofen.

It gives me quite a dense picture of him (I'm still only at the passage, where he gets shot down

the second time (if we count a forced landing after a hit on his on the fuel tank) and has to take

a long reconvalescense with his big head wound).

I would highly recommend it - Kilduff gives you any detail about the combats and the craft and

the pilots involved - on both sides. A very good read.

Brand new to this sim, and truly impressed so far!

These planes really require you to fly them, don't they?!?

I'm puzzled by your path for the viewui file.

I cannot find such a pathway. I am running XP pro 32bit, and would have expected to find the files under C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\OFF .... but I don't find folder for OFF under the app data.

What am I missing???

Is your reference for Vista or Windows 7?

Thanks.

This from the OFF/BHaH FAQ:

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_LOGON_NAME\Application Data\Microsoft\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields

(XP)

C:\Users\YOUR_LOGON_NAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields

(Vista)

Hope this helps.

There's a good chance it's under C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/... or.. /Over Flanders Fields/ Mine's in the root of main game folder.

Thanks folks.

Here's the only path I can see for OFF's viewui

C:\OBDSoftware\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields\viewui.xml

CFS3 stores it both in its own directory and in the Application Data folder under the user name.

I have to guess OFF sets its own directory outside Microsoft Games and only stores it there.

If you do a file search you will probably find that there are several viewui files in existence.

I believe only one of them actually effects the game ... changing the others has no effect (going by memory here)

I have XP Home (32 bit) and on my system the file that needs to be changed is found in ...

C:\Documents and Settings\Richard\Application Data\Microsoft\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields

Yep, TaillyHo and 77Scout should be right - my path was for Windows Vista.

Welcome "between heaven and hell", Wombat!

With that name, I dare to guess we have another member from down under?

If you like, send me a PM with your town and country, and I will add you to our

OFF Forum Pilots Maps.

And don't forget: new lad buys the drinks, okay?

Today, I think I'll have Chips with salt & vinegar flavour, and an Old Speckled Hen

(always wanted to know how that tastes).

I didn't mean to mislead...I'm actually just outside Bangor, Maine, USA.

I also finally found the location of the viewui files; one in the root game directory, and the other right where it's supposed to be in C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\M$\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields. Not sure how I missed it before, but...

And yes, drinks are on me!!!

Thanks to all for the help

You must have better eyes than me. Or a better graphic resolution?

I frankly admit, that, when I don't fly my "fully serious pilots" (in Jasta 2 and Jasta 11), I use Labels quite often.

In rather tired state of mind and eyesight, I prefer doing so, to have some fun.

Otherwise I don't find the enemy planes, which have dived down.

I am pretty sure, that in RL, they would be a good bit easier to recognise? (Shimmering etc.)
